Can anyone confirm that the approach lights featured in the simulator are accurate? It should be drawn on a approach plate, but I havent seen any of these yet. I find it hard to believe that they are accurate. They seem designed to cause you to undershoot and crash when in poor visibility. They seem different for every airfield as well.

MP Bad weather ILS training missions
bluepilot76 replied to Cibit's topic in User Created Missions General
I enjoy these missions, very good practice... still a bit ropey so plenty more practice in order... Having got the nack of AAR I had to try the race to the tanker mission. Track attached, 14m30 secs. Might be a bit of controversy though...the tanker wouldnt tell me topped off and ready to go, and just kept disconnecting me. The tanks appeared full so I decided to make a break for the ILS. 14.5mins.trk -
Hi, just call up the tower, the frequency is on the divert page. They will give you the QFE (pressure setting). Set that pressure into the altimeter. The altimeter will now tell you your height above the airfield.
-
OK, well I am not aware of any acknowledged bugs, something I noticed the other day was that I kept getting disconnected about a second after being told "taking fuel", despite being completely stable. Even though I was told disconnected, I was actually still connected, but I think the tanks were full, the gauge wasnt going up anymore as far as I could tell. However other times I have been told "tanks topped off and ready to roll" or something like that.

Do you mean In Flight Refuelling or Instrument Flight Rules? IFR usually means Instrument Flight Rules in aviation. Acronymn for Air to Air Refuelling is usually AAR I think?

In the campaign Devils Cross I am sure I have rearmed from both of the obvious aprons at Vaziani, ie the two closest to the runway at each end. I had a theory that it matters which way you are heading, I always aim the nose away from the runway towards the back of the apron and that seems to work (I found I couldnt rearm the the other way round at Batumi, I needed to be pointing towards the tower with the trucks in front of me)

Okey Doky then! That sounds good! Off to check settings..Thanks for your help! EDIT> Yep, was still on 50! looking forward to having another go. It would have been great on the old multiplayer games where everyone took off at the same time, then you would spread out and fly around for an hour not finding anyone!

Question about HUD mode vs Weapon Profile/Delivery Mode
bluepilot76 replied to latearrival's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Sweeeeet.... I know the feeling! -
Re> career mode, OK thats what i thought initially. Nothing wrong with a bit of role play though eh? As for the object rendering thing, I am not saying one or the other, I am just asking what is the difference? It might just be that on my settings (not maxxed) that there is no difference, or it might be that because I havent flown ROF for a few months it was not apparent to me, but I couldnt perceive any drastic difference. I always thought the graphics were really good anyway...so really Im asking what difference am I supposed to be appreciating...what is it supposed to do that it wasnt doing before?I might be a being a bit thick, I am not that up to speed on all the computing terminology that come with these programs. I just like it to look nice and go smooth...which I always thought ROF was amazing for..Is it that you wouldnt need to use the icons to see something far away?

Question about HUD mode vs Weapon Profile/Delivery Mode
bluepilot76 replied to latearrival's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Would that "wierd situation" involve being uside down, eyes on target, machine gun fire coming in from the left, SAM warning from the right, Wingy yelling "mudspike", AWACS report bogeys at 16 miles......Good sim this! -
I have just downloaded the update, and went for a tentative hop. I am a bit confused though.. What is going on with this career mode? I thought it was just a better presented version of the campaign engine, but is it actually a multiplayer based system? Something Sticky said confused me> after you shot down the DR1 you wanted to find out who had flown it, would that be just a computer generated career for the enemy, ie was he an ace or a novice, or was he actually RL pilot flying his career in the DR1? It seems to take a long time to generate the missions when I click "next day" and then the first mission didnt have my pilot in it. Do I need to create more pilots in the squadron to be able to fly in more of the missions? Lastly I didnt notice much difference with the graphics? At first I tried pumping everything up to max and it was too slow so went back to my old settings, nice and smooth. Whats this extreme rendering thing that everyone is on about? You could always zoom in and see the enemy planes, no?

Question about HUD mode vs Weapon Profile/Delivery Mode
bluepilot76 replied to latearrival's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Im glad you asked that. I was never sure why I had the choice of delivery methods on the HUD when it had been set in the profile. Personally I find it a bit of a carry on going into the profile and swapping CCRP with CCIP when Im in the middle of a nice bit of action... -
OK thanks for your help folks, and I had a bit read of the FAQs. I had it all wrong! I thought your rep power was your reps, and the green boxes were some sort of recency indicator. Also very interesting to see the comments people had left after repping. I had no idea!

Hi Boberro, thanks for your help, never been to User Control Panel before. Hopefully my specs will appear at the bottom of this post!

Hi Custer, Actually it was more seeing you bobbing around for ages on the refuel, that made me realise how much more controllable it should be, hence inspiring me to get round to changing the values. Certainly does make a big difference. Eggcake, possibly you are trying too hard to find a trim for every situation, I think what you need to do is find out the tanker speed, then realise that you need to trim so you are flying straight and level when at that speed. then not touch the trim again. So for example, tanker speed 218kts. you find the trim where when you are flying 218 constant, without changing the throttles, the aircraft will hold level for extended periods, say 5 seconds or so, then you might need to make a small attitude correction, but that trim is probably about right, so dont touch it. You probably wont ever find the exact trim, then understand that as you increase the throttles and speed in order to close in on the boom, your trim will momentarily become incorrect. BUT DONT CHANGE IT! because when you reduce speed to hold the correct position on the tanker, you will fly back into the correct trim that you had already established in your pre contact position. Maybe this is the problem you have, thats how I think of it anyway.

Hi Custer, Thanks for your reply re axis curves. I had not wanted to change mine in case it caused difficulties in other areas, however I set them to the same setting as yourself and was able to stay on and do the whole refuelling in one go! very satisfying! thanks for the info!

Last few missions I have paid a lot more attention to avoiding the SAM threat. generally I am flying in high, when I see the spike I an doing a U turn and calling in the SEAD, then listening in and watching the scope to see how they are getting on. Whilst this is happening you can often see where the SAMS are launching from, perhaps make it a SPI and zoom in, ready to kill it yourself if needs be. Keeps getting killed by the SEAD though. I am enjoying flying the missions at high altitude now, problems usually arise as I have run out of mavs and bombs and starting to get in low to have a few runs with the gun, then it seems to be the machine guns and shoulder launched jobs that are giving me trouble. Anyway a for a few missions now I have come back without a scratch and with objectives complete. That is quite a good feeling and one I could get used to!

Hi, as I approach 200 posts I figured I should start to understand a bit about the reps and things that are going on on the forum. Firstly, what are the green boxes under my name. I have 6 at the moment, but they are all dark green. Sometimes I see light green ones? What does that mean? Secondly; repping. I gather I can get repped. How do I give a rep? Once, I lost some reps, but shortly after I got some more. if you lose a rep what does it mean? does it come back after a few days or were the replacement reps I got new ones? How do I knock a rep off someone else I just want to know that I am not missing some fundamentals of forum courtesy.

Hi how do I automatically put my system specs down at the bottom of my posts?
-
If you get the HYD PRESS, L/R caution light, the manual says, for the left system; 1. set the FLAP EMER RETR switch to EMER RETR 2...... Do you only have to do this if the flaps are out, or do you have to do it regardless? Likewise the procedure involving speed brakes for the right system. I was thinking having the flaps out must take hydraulic pressure so we want to retract them to save that hydraulic pressure for more useful things later on in the recovery? But if the flaps are not out do we not have to use that switch? anybody know?

I am reallly glad I can download the software. I hate having cupboards full of dusty old boxes. I also am really glad I was able to see a certain amount of the genesis of this sim, having joined in the betas somewhere. I feel like I put a little bit into the sim as well, rather than just picking up a completed product from the shop that I expect to work perfectly. I might buy a manual when they come out though. Id like some sort of pilots pack actually; laminated map, 9 line cards, checklist booklet, whatever the pilot walks out with. Piddle pack....
-
Nice flying! Have you edited your controller curves?
-
oh youve got it bad dude . So you got the Sim and the TM Warthog at the same time? Sweet.

Actually is it china hat short aft or TMS short aft...Im sure its just the opposite of hooking it. I can do it on my stick blindfolded, just have a look in the book

OK I really dont want to be a smarty pants, but in the case of an ILS it doesnt matter what you actually have set in the course selector of the HSI, the localiser bar will only centralise when you are on the localiser, obviously its a lot easier to interpret if it is lined up correctly though and everybody would do this in reality. This is not the same as the VOR (TACAN) useage where it will only centralise when you are on the radial that your HSI is set to. So it sort of depends what navigation equipment you are using which is being displayed on the HSI.
