24 Gb of DDR-3....will I see a problem?
C3PO replied to Cheap_Trick's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
What resolution will you be playing at? -
At 4k, it's all about pushing pixels and that means holding as much in memory as possible. Here's what my 3090 Ultra is doing at 4k in a MP Syria mission (all settings high, except pre-load radius which is set to 60%) ... VRAM is king...and 10GB cards aren't enough, IMO, even with the 3080 RTX.

Whoops - please transfer this to the questions thread...

Hi - one of the things I loved about Falcon was the ability to jump into a pre-built mission from the ATO ... or rather a pre-built flight from a selection of different missions. I might be missing something but is there anything like that in DCS? At the moment I seem only to be able to pick an aircraft, wander into the F10 map and fish around for clumps of red on the map and go for those. I’d love to have an Air Tasking Order automatically generating missions which can be tweaked by the users to prosecute the war. Maybe that’s the point of the campaign engine coming over the next year, but wanted to check if there was a facility already for a “simple user” like me. Also, PAK sliders over different theatre areas would be amazing to concentrate resources where necessary.

I read here in the ED notes from the latest news: ”We are hard at work with DCS World 2.7 and in addition to the new clouds you can expect to see substantial new Hornet and Viper features, updates to The Channel and Syria maps, improved fire effects, enhanced structural damage modelling for the WWII aircraft, updated sound effects, new World War II propeller disk animation, and more.” What are the updates to the Syria maps? I understand that Cyprus is coming but was wondering what else is being done perhaps from an optimisation point of view?

My 3090 Ultra has made a huge difference in Syria, because of the 24GB of VRAM. No stutters on max settings.

Okay - did a quick test streaming 4k 60FPS to disk while running a simple flight over clear water, no objects other than the jet, fixed view looking out from the cockpit ahead and no land nearby in the Persian Gulf. On the old system using nVidia Share to send the video to disk was seeing a 10% drop in FPS. With the new system, zero FPS dropped. FPS is locked as if nothing happened. Pretty impressed.

How to calculate your current flight time and fuel flow oscillations
C3PO replied to Vitormouraa's topic in AV-8B N/A
My Brain Is Blown -
I'll put up a side-by-side video over the next few days of the old system v new system with FPS/CPU/GPU/MEM loads etc.. I'll use the opening AV-8B campaign mission from the ship and do the cold cockpit startup routine ... that was usually the most taxing on the old system.
-
Yes it was - and to be honest the older system was handling the 4k pretty well indeed ... even streaming video to the disk using nVidia Share with just a 10% drop in FPS. The EVGA 3090 is quite loud at "full chat" - those blowers powerful. I don't mind a few FPS less and keeping that level of noise to a minimum ... keeping power down a little too.
-
Yes I think you'd be mad to get a GPU now ... I ordered when they were basically RRP (so £1,400 for the 3090, now the same card is £2,400, utterly ridiculous). It'll quieten down a bit over the summer hopefully.

Has to last for the next five years!
-
Thank you - and yes, about a 40% increase in FPS. Persian Gulf at full texture res takes ~ 10.4GB, rising to 10.8GB with mirrors on. My "old" GTX 1080 with 8GB was permanently struggling (perhaps unsurprisingly).
-
The Beast Has Arrived - three months after ordering! 5800X / 32GB 3200 RAM / EVGA 3090 Ultra. DCS smooth as silk at 4k. Have actually underclocked the 3090 a bit.
-
nVidia Share is excellent - use the two NVEC units on GTX1080 cards upwards. Very little hit to the CPU.

Really looking forward to learning as much as possible!

Upgrading my PC and running some tests (including VR)
C3PO replied to Eugel's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This week I'm due to get my new system (5800X / 32DDR 4 RAM / 1TB M.2 drive / EVGA 3090 Ultra) and am equally curious. But I have been using my current "old" i7 6700K system for creating videos ... I run at 4K resolution in all maps including Syria (even with my good old GTX 1080 8GB!!) to a level of reasonable performance - at medium to high settings, although it struggles a bit in MP in Syria. I think you'll get a big improvement in performance because the Instruction Per Clock (IPC) figure is higher for the 5800X than the 6700K. That said, the i7 6700K is still very capable. I recently bought an Elgato 4K60 S+ unit to take all loads off the system - compared it with streaming video at 4K from DCS using the Elgato and nVidia Share...full details in video description with benchmarks for each attempt. Interesting results. I'll do the same test with the new system once it arrives. -
Best F/a-18 Sim that isnt DCS?
C3PO replied to The_Chugster's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I cut my teeth on Graphsim's Hornet 1.0 on an Apple LC475 back in the early 90s. It got me hooked on flightsims. My friend owned the Apple and game and spent hours on it!
