@BST: When can we expect the Mi-8 manual to be available?
Slazi replied to Flagrum's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Excellent update! Lots still to look forward to! -
Thanks, Ian. I'll have to look at SiMod when I get some free time then. Witchcraft is working nicely for me btw :) Great mod. I'm surprised there is nothing to add weight by standard, it seems like something a lot of people would want to do.

Excellent news! Can't wait.

Hello again friendly mission makers! I've finally had a little time to get some scripting done to work on my mission. I'm starting to get the hang of lua. Classes working, functions returning, all that jazz. So I can interact with my script from DCS, but I'm now stuck because my script cannot interact with DCS yet. What I'm looking for is a list of DCS commands that can be accessed via lua. A few examples: I want references to specific groups. I want to get the names of all the active clients. I want to add and remove radio commands for players. I want to be able to change flags. - Done! (e.g trigger.action.setUserFlag(10, 1) - sets flag 10 to 1) I want to be able to tell dcs to load another script file from a location. I want to add weight to a player aircraft. I'm guessing there must be a place where I can find this information. But I couldn't find it in any of the stickies. MIST is available, but it does far more than I need from my scripts. I want to keep mine lightweight and modular. Thanks for reading! -- edit - sorry - I am aware of this (parts 1 and 2) http://en.wiki.eagle.ru/wiki/Simulator_Scripting_Engine/DCS:_World_1.2.1/Part_1#Class_emulation I had seen this in the past, but forgotten about it. Am reviewing again now.

Mi-8 has been my favorite module for quite some time. Definitely worth it if you love flying helos. If you are only into combat, then perhaps not so much.
-
I'm still interested in trying to do this via scripts, but I'm finding it hard to get the basics. I guess what I need are some good tutorials to get me started, so at least I can see how to interface with the game properly.

Can't wait for DCS version 2.0. I'm also very excited to see all the upcoming projects finally starting to make their way out into the wild. It's a good time to be a flight sim nerd!

I tried Witchcraft last night, but I'm having a little difficulty getting DCS to display what is going on in the browser mission editor. Perhaps I missed a step or something. I also ended up blue-screening my computer when using it, but I hope that is just a one off. I'll give it another try tonight - mainly for the LUA script aspect.
-
Thanks for all the responses. I'm very interesting in using scripting now. I really want to avoid flags :) It's far easier to understand LoadCargo("TransportA", "30mm") rather than set flag 1 = 3132 Gonna be an interesting side project.

Sounds like a good project! I only wish I had the time. I'll definitely look into getting some of the simpler stuff done via scripts so I don't need to repeat my efforts each time.
-
I was mainly looking at doing common tasks in Lua instead of doing in the ME. Things like simple drops. If you want to set up a a pickup and dropoff there's quite a lot of ME work associated with the radio commands and flags. Having to repeat this for every single item you want to pickup or drop off takes a while. Ideally I want to just have functions (in lua) that get rid of all the heavy lifting.
-
So I've been looking through the 'official' missions, namely the campaigns, and I have noticed that none of them I can see use any scripts. This was quite a surprise to me. I figured scripting in Lua was far more convenient and readable than trying to do things in the editor and remember what all the flags are supposed to mean. Is scripting generally discouraged? Are there performance considerations I should worry about? Most of the missions I've worked on in the past have been done entirely in the ME (with third party scripts where required). Should I stick with the ME or try to do more via lua so I can reuse my work as any good OO programmer should?

Extra computers as Image Generators

Would be nice, but I doubt many users would take advantage of it. Perhaps a pro license version priced to recover dev costs. -
Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight question
Slazi replied to freespirit's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Yup, the main thing missing is the manual, and of course the dcs multiplayer in one aircrafta aspect. There's a nasty SAS bug right now, but there's a workaround and I'm sure it'll be fixed soon. -

Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight question
Slazi replied to freespirit's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
You can play without pedals and trackIR without any problems. I can even get about on a keyboard when I'm testing missions. I'm sure you'll have a great time. -
I'll let you give it a try once it's in a playable state. I sometimes put a multiplayer server up, but I really need to be threre to explain what isn't working properly :) I need to research the trigger functions, and other people's missions. Never enough time!

Great! Thx for the info c. Yoyo, can't wait for the sling. I have basic reloading working in my mission now. I still need to figure out adding weight etc, but I can 'reload' a Shilka to activate it and allow CA players to control it. Kinda cool.

Has anyone found any good missions where you are tasked with more than general troops drops? I'm specifically interested in dropping vehicles, ammunition, sappers, special forces, mechanics, or any other special units. I love the idea of dropping off sappers to destroy a bridge or lay mines in an area. Special forces hiding in buildings then ambushing passing vehicles. I'm sure there are lots of things that could be done. Unfortunately, all of the DCS vehicles seem way too big to be carried by the Mi-8. But I think carrying ammunition, spare parts, or other equipment would be a reasonable tasking. It's a shame we dont have light jeeps with support weapons or something that we could fly around. Right now, I'm looking for ways to make the Mi-8 feel more a part of missions, instead of a disconnected unit that makes for an easy target for the enemies.
-
Put a message to all next to thee explode unit command. That will prove the trigger is being activated. I'm not familiar with the command, so maybe someone else can give you more info. Good luck.
-
How about explaining how you are doing it.
-
Use keys or get enough people to support this mouse idea. I doubt anyone cares.
-
Flying with no SAS is fine if you want to practice flying under adverse conditions, but if you dont, its not.

Keeping an old PC because it still runs is not a great plan. It's like refusing to get a fiber optic internet connection because your floppy disk drive still works and you can type text files and post them to your friends instead of joining this flash in the pan internet fad. If you want to play modern games, upgrade when and if you can afford it. If money is too tight, stick with older games until you can afford an upgrade.
