1. You could do this with DCS Blackshark 1 if I remember correctly. I remember ejecting out of a the KA-50, walking up to another one, pressing enter or something, then being able to use that one.
2. Already commented on the site a while ago, but boosting this thread is a good thing. Great article. Looking forward to seeing more for the Mi-8 in the future.
3. Anything for a fellow rotorhead! Thank you for sharing your findings with others, too!
4. Csar is in already via mods. Good job, modders!
5. Was working last I saw. I'll go check now. - Actually - before I do, are you on standard or beta?
6. I admit, communication does appear to be an issue. But they are making progress. A draft manual was posted recently, which a lot of people, including myself, seem to have missed. External fuel tanks were also ninjad in at some point. The Mi-8 is a great machine to fly, so I'm hopeful for thef future. This module is a long term investment for me.
7. Would be nice, but if they're gonna add a door gunner, they should use Russian hardware first.
8. My Findings So after looking at this, I've figured out the basics. I'll try and fill out this post more completely when I get time. Navigation: Navigation can be done in one of three ways: ARC-9, ARC-UD, Doppler. The ARC-9 ADF is generally used for NDB navigation that will take you to the runways that have NDBs (most, but not all). The frequency is entered on one of the two dials. You might want to consider using Lino's map for this. The ARC-UD works via presets (1-6) and is used for tracking units or other things people have added to the mission. An example would be units that need rescuing. Doppler tracks movement. Radios: The R-863 works via presets and a dial. The presets are not current set by default, but can be added via a small change to the radio script. The dial is simple to use. The radio script will allow you to do things like contacting airbase towers using presets. This simplifies having to set the information manually. I added mine under the agr section and this works: agr = { input_signal_deviation = 50.0, --Db output_signal_deviation = 5.0, --Db input_signal_linear_zone = 10.0, --Db regulation_time = 0.25, --sec } presets = {} presets[1] = 121000000.0 -- Anapa presets[2] = 131000000.0 -- Batumi presets[3] = 141000000.0 -- Beslan presets[4] = 126000000.0 -- Gelendzhik presets[5] = 130000000.0 -- Gudata presets[6] = 133000000.0 -- Kobuleti presets[7] = 122000000.0 -- Krasnodar Centre presets[8] = 128000000.0 -- Krasnador Pash presets[9] = 124000000.0 -- Krymsk presets[10] = 134000000.0 -- Kutasai presets[11] = 125000000.0 -- Maykop presets[12] = 135000000.0 -- Mineralnye Vody presets[13] = 137000000.0 -- Mozdok presets[14] = 136000000.0 -- Nalchik presets[15] = 123000000.0 -- Novorossiysk presets[16] = 132000000.0 -- Senaki presets[17] = 127000000.0 -- Sochi Adler presets[18] = 129000000.0 -- Sukhumi presets[19] = 139000000.0 -- Tblisi Soganlug presets[20] = 138000000.0 -- Tblisi Lochini The R-828 has only presets. These are set in the radio script by default. You can add in units in the game to broadcast on these frequencies. They are set in FM. The 828 can also be used for navigation, but I've yet to get this working correctly. If I've made any mistakes with this information, feel free to post corrections! Hopefully this will be a useful reference for people. Please also let me know if you think something is missing! :book: Thanks to Cibit for pointing me in the right direction, and thanks to everyone else (Imp, firewings, airwar, and others) on the forums who originally discovered this information. I'm still pretty new to all this, all I'm trying to do is compile everything in one place so people don't have to search so hard to find it. Once the manual is released, we won't need to worry :) :helpsmilie: Edit: There's a beta manual! :megalol:
9. I think most of us want combat, but 3rd party guys should be free to make what they wish. Human control towers and awacs mods, anyone?
10. Was good talking with you yesterday, Cibit. You helped me out with pretty much everything I needed to know. When I get some time, I'll try and post up my findings so other people can enjoy the Mi-8 a little more!
11. Thanks, Cibit! Great info as always. I'll take a good look at this during the week. Perhaps I'll try and compile it all into a post here once I'm done. - Actually, there really doesn't seem to be that much more to it. So in order to use the R828, I need to manually put in transmitters. I was hoping there was a way to home in on the airbases directly.
12. I've been looking at how to find my way around recently. I can use: ARC-9 Doppler I have no idea about: ARC-UD R863 - Preset - Dial R828 I'm assuming these radios can be used for navigation. I imagine you can just tune the R863 radio to the airbase frequency and then use this to navigate. Is this correct? Has anyone got any experience with this? Thanks!
13. Not sure that's true. Would be interesting to know how fast he was descending there.
14. Most definitely. Trees really mess up a helicopter pilots day. They cause problems for jets, but I think the rotors feel it more.
15. Definitely interesting. Would be nice to have some UN Mi-8s and ground vehicles doing aid work or evacuation.
16. For TrackIR, I've bound my center button to my joystick so I can quickly be where I need to be. I find I move about a lot during a flight. I wouldn't want to lose any of my axis.
17. You're not talking about the IR Covers are you? They can be removed.
18. I don't see any problems with adding civilian aircraft to DCS. They can be added to combat missions as targets, units to escort, they can do logistical work etc... Saying that, I'd prefer military aircraft where possible.
19. TrackIr (or something like it) and not being zoomed in or too focused on my instruments usually helps.
20. Had a great flight with a new member who recently joined. Think we managed around three hours of navigation mixed in with a little combat and general control practice. Great fun!
21. Not sure I can understand that post. You mean people would join if the group was an English speaking group? It is. Everything in there is posted in English. No more excuses! Join and fly :) :pilotfly:
22. Great post, zaelu.
23. I do this: - Lower collective - Decrease throttle to min - Switch off fuel lines - Turn off the generators (the last 4 power switches you flip on the back right top panel) - Flip all the switches back to their default positions - Put the rotor break on once the rotors have stopped (or going slowly) There's a proper Mi8 manual (non-game) available. Anyone read this yet? My procedure seems to allow me to start up again normally after, but I'm not sure it's correct.
24. Sounds like a party!!! Thanks for your support Cibit. It's hard to get people together it seems, but if we keep reminding them and keep the tools open, hopefully we can help some people get some good games in!
25. Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've posted anything about this, and I figure there must be a few new Mi-8 pilots around by now. We have an unofficial steam group: DCSMi-8 You can use this to find other Mi-8 pilots to fly with and to organize events. If you're interested in learning to fly the 8, there are sure to be people around able to help you. Steam has a group chat channel, if you're interested in flying with other people or have questions, just hang out in there. It's usually empty, but once people start using it more I'm sure it will become more popular. Have a great 2015.
