2019 and a new updated 3D model... with no changes to the thin 3D prop model: Any hope we get this fixed any time in the future? Perhaps fixed is the wrong word, "up to standard" of other warbirds would be a better term.

4 years old, but still applies:

I use TrackIR and can see all 3 gauges perfectly. Adjust your profile, don't use just default. Here is a good tutorial on how to set up a TiR profile:

I got my 100g tube from this Shop: https://shop.newgatesimms.com/product/nyogel-767a/ Opted for normal shipping than the faster more expensive one - took about 4 weeks to arrive. Per gram, this is a very good price when compared to the 10g tubes.

Formation examples Been playing around some more with possible formations, and this an example what you can currently build within DCS World. I hope this will help those trying to build their own formations. Basic 3x3 flying level Basic 3x3 with height separation Basic 3x4 with height separation Full wing 3x3x3 with height separation * Full wing 3x3x3 flying level Full wing 3x4x3 with outer 3x4 set to wing positions Javelin Down 3x3x3 with height separation * Javelin Down 6x3 with height separation (1-6 use Combat Box, 7 and 8 use Javelin Down) * Though they look the same, it is better to use Combat Box option since in Javelin Down left high group and right low group elements fly directly behind wing element of the lead group thus obstructing line of fire at 6 OC. SCREENS: https://postimg.org/gallery/dvgqnp58/ Javelin Down also differs from Combat Box in a way that it can set up 4 different wings, one flying behind another, together forming a bomber stream. Combat Box at its maximum (top) option / distance / separation only builds a large box where each group flies level. Mixing both options should yield best results. Sadly though, a proper 18 plane Combat Box is not possible to build, due to the (correct) way of setting formations up where planes/groups on the right alway fly higher than the lead, and those on the left lower. This is applicable to bombers/planes which have a pilot on the left side (you can't look to the right and below your nose if you're sitting on the left side). Though if we ever get a Japanese G4M for the example, the option for planes and groups flying either higher or lower on both sides should exist. And that is why the Combat Box described in the first post is unique in comparison to other formations. It is also not possible to build a proper 7 plane element due to limit of only 4 planes per group. 5 ship VEE is also out of the question. Few more historical photos: Missions attached below. You're welcome! Thought I've only just begun. When work load eases in the upcoming days, I hope to make a video tutorial on how to build proper WWII formations. In the mean time, here are two basic 3x3 plane formations to get you started. Captain Orso's mission was of great help. My first attempts look amateurish in comparison. :) Formation01_basic3x3_level.miz Formation01_basic3x3_hightseparation.miz

Thanks. I know that the group lead being central anchor. That is how I fly my formations and how I set up the one in DCS. :) I was wondering about how you set individual small groups of 3 planes, the other 2 planes not being lead also known as wing positions. I couldn't get them to fly level with the 3 plane group lead. As said earlier, I've only had an hour or so to mess about with this, and all of it was adjusting Nirvi's original formation setup. Once I find the time to build one myself from scratch I will know more. Thanks for the tips and the mission. Downloading now. EDIT: 2 seconds later... I found the culprit / what I was looking for:
-
I couldn't get them to fly level as in not staggered as in not right higher and left lower than element lead. Can you also share wing position settings inside of the 3 plane element please? I'm dying to get my hands on this myself, but work and social life intervened.
-
Can do that. But not sure if I'll get around to it today. Super swamped with work. In the mean time, there are two mission files I've posted in this thread. Feel free to use them. Sent with Tapatalk

Managed to set up 2 out of 3 formations from the first post. Not bad for an alpha build: 18 plane 3x6 ship element: 18 plane Javelin Down: Close up beauty shots: Bomb run and cohesive formation finishing 180° turn:

That is exactly how I did it, by using "WW2 Big Formation" under advanced options. Set up flights of 3, then set them to follow the lead of another 3 plane element - up to the whole squadron lead. Just set that particular element to Combat Box under Formation Type and it will do its thing properly (i.e. not overlap). As far as the Wing, Group and Box options - be sure to watch the video from the thread I opened a while back: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=184864 - might as well continue the discussion there, if you wish to attempt at building some of those formations :)
-
I just rearranged the flights Nirvi did. Removed the 4th plane from each element and set them up following each other per formation flying rules. I did try to rename the groups later on, but it seems to me that it doesn't make a difference. Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong. I've only messed about with this for an hour. Referencing my earlier thread. Thank you for this. No hard feelings, but what you set up there is a gaggle, not a formation. :pilotfly: :D This is my attempt at two 18 plane formations in DCS, I took the liberty and upgraded your mission with two of mine: #1 ... 3x6plane elements or the most common and easiest to fly #2 ... 6x3plane elements i.e. Javelin Down A couple of observations: - the far right element (second 3 plane group in high squadron) when set to Javelin Down overlaps with first group in the said high squadron and is the only one that will collide within the formation, solution was to set that 3 plane group to Combat Box - bomb releases are set to highest intervalometer setting possible, or it seems so or it could be target settings related ... I hope for a tighter grouping or even salvo options - animation of bombs dropping is all backwards, first the bombs from the top of the bomb bay fall through the other bombs in the bomb bay - please fix :D I was not able to set up a proper 18 plane Combat Box formation, for that to be available, "low right" and "high left" options inside Javelin Down must be added. Though I was messing about with formations for only an hour or so. No more time today. Color me impressed ED. Great work and I do hope this isn't on your back burner to improve upon. Bomberformation18plane3element.miz BomberformationJavelinDown.miz

Flew online mostly, and got to taste the new map. The only change I made to my settings were toning down visibility from Extreme to Ultra. And pressing left Alt + Enter to force full screen and Shadowplay to work. Then some of the stutters went away. The map in general looks gorgeous. The detail levels are off the charts from anything I've ever seen. Simply gorgeous and stunning. Did shoot down my very first Dora as in first kill on Normandy overall, but failed to record it with Shadowplay (see Alt + Enter comment). No problems with spotting but some work still needs to be done. Last encounter I chased the enemy 109 in a P-51 over the water and even though he was close to me and co-alt I've failed to spot him in spite of constant F10 help. Then there is the lighting... As others have noted, cockpits now look washed out and very much step back from what we had before. Same goes for the skins. Majority of them are not working. Wish that gets fixed soon. Good work, hope we get a more polished product soon. :joystick:

I realize this is all WIP. However, just one small remark about the standard 12 plane box: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3133975&postcount=43 - The planes don't fly staggered in the second and third element. Only the last element flies lower than the lead, for the box to be effective all elements should fly at their own altitude

Looks promising. Can't wait to try it out in-game.

Interesting read on 109s handling characteristics...

Since Wags, in his Normandy WWII stream, mentioned bomber AI and formations being in the works, thought I'd share something my group came up with. Or better, the results of the study we did on how 8th AF flew bomber formations in WWII. There is much more to the "combat box" than wiki would tell you. :) Standard ... 21 | 3 x 7 plane element formation The most straightforward formation to fly. 3 large elements with planes stacked behind and below each other in groups of 3. 3 main elements fly stacked against each other. Here is a video animation done long time ago for the purposes of teaching new pilots flying with us: And few photos of it in practice: Javelin Down ... 18 | 6 x 3 plane element formation Those of you who played EAW should remember this one, since it was used throughout the whole game on every mission involving heavies. Images and 3D animation: Combat Box ... 18 | 6 x 3 plane element formation Finally a proper Combat Box formation. An evolution of the Javelin Down, and the most difficult to fly and hold together. But, offers the best protection. Some images from this video (in general recommended watching, on the subject): It is difficult to distinguish Javelin Down from a proper Combat Box, here are some photos of the other two formations in practice: Not saying that these are the only formations that were flown, but these are the most documented ones and easiest to understand. The combat box as such is often poorly understood and most people think it involves nothing more than a bunch of planes flying close together without any rules or guidelines. In fact, direct opposite is true, as evident on the linked video and photos. Hope that we get to see some of these when Normandy gets out, or in the near future. The gorgeous B-17G model is asking for the same quality of the AI and bomber formations. :pilotfly:

What exactly does this mean regarding combined arms??
[DBS]TH0R replied to Raven434th's topic in DCS: Normandy 1944
Seeing how my reply was deleted due to "repeating myself", I will not do the same mistake again. Instead, can someone please clarify how adding new planes will work with the assets pack? This is from the ED's reply on the YT: from one of the replies under trailer: Clearly, this is more than just Combined Arms when they plan on including planes in future updates. Does this mean the planes will be AI only or controllable when added? Or sold as separate new modules? -
Just need some specificity regarding the WWII assets pack
[DBS]TH0R replied to reyco1987's topic in DCS: WWII Assets Pack
Thanks for the heads up. Did not visit these forms for a while now, so I am out of the loop what goes on here. I will buy it, no question there. For a friend as well since I am getting (or should be) all this stuff for free from the KS years ago. That doesn't mean that I have to like it. -

[DBS]TH0R replied to Raven434th's topic in DCS: Normandy 1944
Why not just brand it as "WWII Combined Arms" and be done with it?
