Memory advantage 8 GIG vs 16 GIG?
KLR Rico replied to Fakum's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
8 or 16 gigs?! I thought 640K was enough for anyone. :D I have 20 GB, and usually use 8-12GB of it at any given time to run a ramdisk. -
Oooohhhh.... That explains it. I just go with whatever the default loadouts are in the campaign (Georgian Hammer). For example, last night I had a couple BMP-2 formations to take out. The default was 4x Mavs, 2x MK-82AIR, and 2x CBU-87's. The mavs were burned on the AA threats, the CBU's were largely ineffective, and all I ever get with MK-82AIR is holes in my plane from getting too close to the target. :D After expending the default load I went back to rearm and picked up CBU-97's and more mavs. I had much better luck with that. That said, is the default loadout for any given mission realistic? I was using it for the sake of realism; "CO says this is what I get on my plane, this is what I'll use." but if a real world pilot gets to choose, then maybe I'll start changing my strategy.

Ain't that the truth... I'm so spoiled by guided bombs I get pretty irritated with the ineffectiveness of dumb bombs on armor, anything but a direct hit and the tank drives away. Even cluster bombs (CBU-97 aside...) don't always do the trick. I really hate seeing bomblets rain all over a column and half the vehicles leave unharmed.

I've had the best luck avoiding SA-9's myself... I'll have to give the others a go too.

PCIe 2.0 was backwards compatible with 1.0, so I would *assume* it'll be compatable... but who knows...

Since you have to hit ctrl+e 3x on the keyboard, would you still have to do that if you put a ejection handle on a sim pit?
-
That's awesome! Congrats!

Will this help with the GPU or CPU mostly? My CPU is maxed out, but my GPU is only ever at 50% or so. I could really use some tips to alleviate the CPU load.

I want to get into flight sims and this game but...
KLR Rico replied to Flacracker's topic in Chit-Chat
Just to clarify, I didn't mean yaw control wasn't important, but going to pedals over the typical joystick twist axis wasn't a huge step up IMO. -
It's an amazing idea. It's easy to underestamate how much of our spatial awareness comes from "the seat of the pants". How likely are we to see this in our pits? Does DCS support feeding the data this kind of thing would work from?

I think I heard the trick to using the clip is to have the camera off to the side. Have you done that? With a hat built to the default dimensions, I can just about move my head around to where I can't see the screen anymore and the LED's will hardly ever intersect. My hat was free, there's always some place that's giving away a hat, and I don't really *hate* wearing it, but I guess that's a matter of personal preference. My last free track setup used reflectors similar to Boberro's, and that worked very well. No added weight or batteries. I hope one day someone gets a kinnect/notrackir thing going, and this will all be irrelevant. :D

Engine bleed air pressurizes the cockpit, and the oxygen panel controls the flow to the mask. As long as the supply is on and the mask is being worn, the oxygen would be getting depleted. I haven't noticed if it's modeled in the game...

KLR Rico replied to Flacracker's topic in Chit-Chat
+1 on all that everyone has mentioned. The only "need" is a joystick. A cheap, used HOTAS (X52 for me) is first, and if you like it, head tracking is a very close second.... I can't imagine playing without it now. I use freetrack with good results, and it cost me less than $10 to get set up. Rudder pedals are nice, but IMHO they were the least bang for the buck in terms of adding something to the experience. -
I *want* to like xplane 10, but I'm having a hard time... The VC's suck, the UI sucks, and it's just plain clunky... Trying to setup headtracking and the joystick just so I can fly the demo has been testing my patience. I don't have much choice but to get used to it though... Unless they reincorporate the "simulator" part of the series, MS Flight is going to suck. Hard.

I winged the dimensions on my first 3-point cap, and had some problems at the extremes of pitch and yaw that sound like what you're describing. I rebuilt my model with the default dimensions in freetrack, and now it's working perfectly.

Project 10 - DCS: A-10C Warthog Promo!
KLR Rico replied to Glowing_Amraam's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I know this is an OLD thread, but I just wanted to mention that this is the video that sold DCS:WH to me... It's still the video I use when I want to show someone the "game" I've been spending so much time playing... -
Jet engines run better in cold environments?
KLR Rico replied to Megagoth1702's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Both right! Water injection cools the compressed combustor air which lowers the EGT at a given fuel flow/RPM, and it also increases the mass flow in of itself. -
My wish for future ED air combat simulators:
KLR Rico replied to blackbelter's topic in DCS Wishlist
I for one would love to see more multithreading. I play on workstation hardware, 2x Xeon e5420's (8 physical cores), but since they run at 2.5 GHz, I can't really enjoy gaming on it. AFIK, X Plane 10 is the first sim that has been written to take advantage of multiple cores to the fullest extent.... I'd love to see the trend move to DCS! -
Jet engines run better in cold environments?
KLR Rico replied to Megagoth1702's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I've heard of thermal efficiencies of upwards of 40% for turbofans. The real benefit over say a diesel is the power to weight. Imagine the weight of a diesel that produces 30,000 HP.:) -
Jet engines run better in cold environments?
KLR Rico replied to Megagoth1702's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
About ceramic blades, the T56-A-15 (upgraded engines for the C-130E/H) has them on the first stage. The ceramic in addition to other improvements in cooling technology lead to an TIT (turbine inlet temp) limit increase of over 100C compared to the older -7's (1083C vs 971C). As you said, it doesn't take a whole lot of increase in EGT to produce a whole lot more power. The -15's would hit the aircraft's structural power limit every time, but the -7's would never almost never see it unless it was really cold (there's that temperature thing again! ;)) You're right about them being fragile though! It's not that all uncommon to borescope a -15 and find a whole bunch of 1st stage blades missing! It'd pull power just fine, but the tailpipes would crack from the vibration. -
Jet engines run better in cold environments?
KLR Rico replied to Megagoth1702's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Exactly what Sobek said... Temperature has a huge impact on an engine's performance. We've had engines that were hitting their EGT limits on take-off during the day, so we tried to schedule them to fly at night to squeeze out a few more hours. :D -
I finally achieved full tanks the other day! Very satisfying after all the failures... One of the things that helped me was a bit of curve on the throttle and maybe 20-30% speed brakes, it really helped with the task of keeping the boom in the green.

What's your mission strategy? (workflow?)
KLR Rico replied to KLR Rico's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
That's very helpful! Thanks! Is this there a resource that covers this? How did you learn what to do? Thanks again! -
Hey all, I've run through all the training, and I'm fairly comfortable flying, employing weapons, managing my wingman, etc. I don't have much issue with flying the "instant action" missions because it's pretty much A to B to C kind of gig, but when it comes to the campaign missions, I'm pretty much lost. If I try to fly the waypoint routes, and clear air defenses as I go, I get blasted out of the sky by someone I didn't see. What seems to be working so far is to hang out at the fence, wait on SEAD and CAP to do their thing, pick off a few of my own, move to IP and then do the same thing, and then finally I can press on to the mission objective. If I still have enough fuel/ammo, I'll hit up JTAC to see if they have anything else that needs killin'. Is that how it's supposed to be done? What is your normal procedure?
