X-52 Joystick Sticking Problems
KLR Rico replied to Hobo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Just be cautioned that joining the two sticks is about 10x more work than opening up one to tweak it's innards. :smartass: -
How do I go about building my own gauges?
KLR Rico replied to ncimike3's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I haven't tried making any games for the sim specifically, but I think you could do a lot with an arduino and some r/c type servos. I've used that combination to tinker with making a few simple gauges for other projects with good results. With appropriate housings and gearing, it seems very feasible to build any kind of gauge you wanted (HSI and ADI aside). The hardware side of things might be the easy part... Getting the PC and arduino to talk to each other might prove to be more difficult. The arduino can communicate by serial interface, but I'm not sure how much work it'd be to get everything sorted out in that department. I haven't messed with the serial I/O that much yet. -
Freetrack 2.2 and PS3 Eye Toy --- Access violation
KLR Rico replied to Bexx0r's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
It looks like you've solved your angle problems. I had to do the same thing. Filed the tip flat, and then used sand paper to "frost" the plastic. I'm trying to remember what the differences were between FT 2.1 and 2.2... didn't 2.2 just add support for the wiimote? I remember that being a big deal at some point, but IMHO the PS3 eye works so much better. I'm still trying to think of anything that would affect your 2.2 installation though... Do you use admin rights for FT? I have it on for mine. -
X-52 Joystick Sticking Problems
KLR Rico replied to Hobo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I tried teflon wax, silicone lube, graphite powder, and a few others... Even tried different types of material to go between the base and the moving plate. I could never get rid of that ever-so-slight stiction. It definitely makes AAR a bit more challenging. I eventually just hacked together my X52 with my Sidewinder FFB2 and called it a day. -
Freetrack 2.2 and PS3 Eye Toy --- Access violation
KLR Rico replied to Bexx0r's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
When I check the device manager, I only have one entry for the PS3 eye (or any camera, for that matter). It appears under the category of "Code Labs Devices", and the only sub item in the category is "PS3EYE Camera". That driver is v 4.0.2.1017, dated 10/17/2010. I tried to duplicate the access violation error, but could not get it to happen again, even with running the preview software at the same time. Freetrack wouldn't track, but it didn't cause an error or crash. IIRC, another thing I've had crash FT in the past was problems with the SimConnect output option. From what I remember, if I was running FT and FSX crashed, FT wouldn't operate properly again until I unchecked simconnect, restarted FT, and then reselected the simconnect option. However, since you can't even open FT period, that won't help you much I suppose.... I wish I could be more help. :( -
Wow, that's an intense video. I feel bad for all those guys.

Noob ish question: spotting things
KLR Rico replied to Witchking's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
I've come a long way since first turning off the labels... Air targets are still a challenge, I don't know what can be done about that, but as far as ground targets, I've picked up a few tricks. First, I've learned to anticipate where the units will be. After a while, you pick up on the patterns & formations that the enemy uses. For example, artillery is setup at the rear of the enemy front (look for the smoke from them firing too), and tanks often guard the roads leading into an enemy held town. Tanks are usually setup 3 abreast, so if you find one, scan laterally to find the other two. Just little stuff like that helped me know where to look. Ever since I started flying by the mk 1 eyeball, and less heads down at the TGP, I've gotten quite a bit better at attacking in general. I also play with a 32" LCD @ 1080p, that helps too. :) -
Freetrack 2.2 and PS3 Eye Toy --- Access violation
KLR Rico replied to Bexx0r's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'm also using ps3 eye and FT2.2 on win7x64, it works great for me 99% of the time, but when I've run into these types of errors, restarting the computer fixes it. I'm trying to remember what usually causes the errors though... from what I'm remembering, the access violation error usually pops up when more than one program tries to use the camera. Make sure you only have one instance of FT running, and you don't have any other preview software running. Another thing I might mention is that I have a saitek cessna yoke that doesn't play nice with the PS3 eye for some reason. It doesn't give any errors, it just freezes freetrack. You might try disconnecting some of your USB accessories to narrow it down, if a restart doesn't fix your problem. I still don't know why the yoke and eye don't work together, I just resorted to using a webcam with the yoke, since that works fine. Just something to try I guess. Good luck! -
+1 Same happens to me on my android phone. I've duplicated it with the stock browser, chrome, and dolphin. I usually just have to go into the advanced search, and type there. Being able to work with just the quick search would be great...

I haven't tried tanking at night yet, I find it hard enough during the day as it is. :D Are the boom marker lights modeled?

Holy crap! It really is!

Updated 1.2.2 Available But G940 Issues Persist
KLR Rico replied to 's topic in Controller Profiles and Problems
I haven't had any FFB problems (Sidewinder FFB2), even when the first 2.2.x was released. But I did have to uncheck "swap axis". Sorry for all ya G940 fellas. Broken FFB would blow. It's kinda one of those things you get used to. -
Looking pretty good to me too! All things being equal, it seems I have slightly better FPS. About 10-20% from the look of it so far. I might even try dropping settings to get to that coveted 60fps, I was striving for a consistent 30 before.

Heat settings white and black changed since new patch?
KLR Rico replied to Ramstein's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I noticed this too... The TGP doesn't cut through the haze nearly as well as it used to. I haven't tried it through clouds yet, I wonder how that'll be. -
I was on a MP mission today (with 1.2.2) and went to watch an F6 view of the mav I launched, but also came across a wayward BLU-108 that had detonated (streak of fire animation). It was at 100K ft and climbing. I watched it for a bit and went back to flying around. A couple minutes later, the game crashed. Seems a lot like the crashes from dead planes like in the last version.

"We didn't pull out in front of an airplane!" LOL... Well, how do you explain the landing gear inside your car? Wow... I'm scared of cars when I ride my motorcycle. Now I'll have to watch out while flying too!

SFJackBauer's Saitek X-52 Profile
KLR Rico replied to SFJackBauer's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
It's a good start. You'll probably want to remap one of the hats to snap views though. Maybe move the coolie hat function to the throttle hat + modifier, and then use the lower stick hat + modifier for views. -
Very cool video! There's always buffeting at high alpha... I think the camera rattling around just made it sound worse than it was.

I would have $!#^ myself! I fly RC planes/helis, and got stuck in a tree once. I was going to call the FD, but this would be the way to go.

I'm using a JVC blackcrystal 32" 1080p tv right now. It's about 3 feet in front of me and the center of the screen is eye level. I find it to be quite satisfactory in all regards. I was using a cheap 720p 32" before, but the low resolution and washed out colors were irritating, especially sitting so close.

It's probably just the editing, the public affairs people put those videos together, and I doubt they pay much attention to those kinds of details. That's a sweet video though, and it reminded me of something I'd like to see in game, fuel spray on disconnect. :D

I just found out about the SA-11's functionality without radar today! I was flying a mission that features them, used terrain masking to take out the snow drift, and continued on my merry way to rain hell on the units it was defending. About 15-20 minutes later my RWR lights up with a bunch of missile launch warnings and SA-11 cues. I roll over see at least 4 or 5 plumes headed my way, spam the CMS and hit the ECM... Dodge the first few missiles but ended up getting whacked by a direct hit. Until today, I thought the launchers were helpless without the search radar. Guess I was wrong!
