Maneuvering On The Ground With Differential Braking
Holbeach replied to AG-51_Razor's topic in Bugs and Problems
You don't taxi back on a Carrier after landing. You just land, then take off from where you landed. .. -
End of the war for the British Pacific Fleet. And the US Fleet for good measure. ..

Can't get enough of this carrier stuff. Up to 10 consecutive circuits per session and I'm starting to get the hang. My practice fleet. 1 Desroyer ahead at half mile and Port side Destroyers at 800 and 1400 yards to mark the correct pattern. ..

Are there any game-related differences between the F4U-1D and F4U-1D_CW?
Holbeach replied to tigershark1-1's topic in F4U-1D
It was too low for Corsairs because the armoured deck, which was 4 inches thick, produced a lot of top weight, so it had to be as low as possible to maintain stability. This created a hangar much reduced in height from a US carrier. Luckily the wing tips could be removed. History might have been very different otherwise. .. -
11 in the air. Another one from the cockpit. And another. ..

For interest sake. The -4 had manual cowl and automatic/manual oil cooler/Intercooler flaps. The -5 had Automatic/manual control for all cooling flaps. ..

Bomb Fuse Selection (Nose or Nose and Tail) Does Not Work
Holbeach replied to Rolds's topic in Bugs and Problems
I came to the same conclusion on Aug 6 when I posted this: I tried more fuse combos today but they all exploded on contact. Plugs made no difference unless used N and T, when no explosion will occur. The correct use for a 5 or11 second delay tail fuse AN M116, is for very low level and the nose plug in, but it explodes on contact. The only one that provided a usable delay was nose fuse Mk 244 mod 1, (anti submarine), which gave 4 secs with switch in N/T psition. This fuse is designed to not burst on the sea surface, but travel underwater for 4 secs and burst near a submerged submarine. It's secondary role is to drop on someone over land, for a low level pass with delay.. Oh well, keep plodding on. The M135 A1 and M136 A1 air burst fuse actually works! This timed nose fuse was a thing before radar alt was used. Minimum setting 5 secs. (should be 10), Never used by the Navy, but could be a fun thing to try. -
I'm talking about the RL Corsair. I wonder why they didn't design such a complex engine with auto temp controled cowl flaps. ..

I flew 10 traps plus 1 go round and 1 bolter, in a row, 45 mins total. Engine stopped while setting up next T/O. No.11. Paying particular attention to temps, oil stays in the blue at half open and dosn't need to be touched. Cowl flaps need constant adjustment, (wonder why it's not auto), and mostly wants to go cold. Red line is instant death. Don't close cowl completely. Oil press gauge is always low, red line low, or zero at idle. Fuel press OK. 40 gal left. Res selected. Why did it stop, who knows? After looking at the replay, I noticed the engine was idling a bit slower, about 490rpm, so it didn't seize, it maybe plug fouled and conked out. Lost the hook on no.9 landing, but it still worked for no.10. Carrier has stopped, so last landing was 16kt wind. ..

I took over your track at 7.2 miles, locked the target and fired the Mav at 6.8 nm. so your set up was OK. but no target lock. Make things easier by using attitude mode so you don't have to fly the plane. Makes a lock much more likely. I took over again at 8.6 nm where you had a lock on a bunker and simply pressed the launch button and it went off and hit the target. ..

OK I'm happy with this Carrier landing. Closed cowl will kill the engine so just a crack open will keep temp in the middle blue. Oil at about half open flap, is mid blue temp. Closed will kill engine. Mixture rich. Fuel tank on resreve. Tail wheel unlocked. RPM 2500, MP 28. Carrier 15 kt. Wind 20 kt. Air start. ,, F4U carrier U land .trk

Thanks for your time on this super analysis. I'd tried the cowl closed, oil open 50% and the engine seized in short order. This one was cowl cracked open and oil open to the recommended 30% to see what happens, From my view point the oil was always in the high blue, so I left it as is. Clearly 50% is the way to go, as I've always used this setting before and had no trouble. My rpm is on a rotor on the throttle and after 15 years use it has spikes at 100% and around 2400 rpm. I'm constantly chasing it as it can drop to zero without warning, so I tend to leave it alone if I find a sweet spot, which means I get sloppy on a reT/O as I forget where it is . Here are the temps at point of seize. I guess the engine damage accumulated to the point of destruction. I've taken everything onboard and I'd like to add a couple of things. Cowl flaps should be 2/3rd open for T/O. Fuel pump should be on.(On by default in an air start). Pay more attention to BUMPPFHH checks. MP 45 easily does the job on a light T/O. Once again, thanks for your time. Regards. ..

I tried a 'cowl flaps closed' carrier landing to see if it really stopped the engine, as others have said. Air start, oil flaps open. MP 30, 2400 rpm. Speed 100 kt. Sure enough, the cyl temp needle kept rising and as soon as it touched the red line 260C, the engine seized. This of course is not what should happen. The red line is the upper limit for certain operations, not the self destruct line. So. I cracked the flaps open, enough to keep the temp in the blue. Oil is in the high blue.and after 17 mins into my 3rd landing, the engine seized. I'm at a loss to see why. .. F4Uengine seize.trk

More British Corsair Carrier action in the Far East. You can clearly see the fully castoring tailwheel here.

I did an air start, carrier landing, take off, then another landing, about 6 mins later, then the engine seized. I new exactly what had happened. I had forgotten to open oil flap and the oil temp was over limit. Crack this at the cowl flap check and this will never happen. I guess that after the relatively high cooling speed during descent, the speed drop to below 100 mph and MP around 30, will increase the temp and seize the engint, because of low air flow. ..

Open the oil and intercooler flaps. These have been activated at the last update. ..

Thanks for looking. I'll pay more attention to detail and give it some more today. Update: 30 mins of Carrier circuits including bolters, without any engine probs. Get those flaps open boys. .. ..

I have had 5 engine stops today, all on approach to the carrier.. It's never happened before. I though of mixture, which I never touch, for simplicity. Here's one that didn't put me in the sea. Should the MP read 30 with the engine stopped? .. F4U carrier U strip 4 prop stop .trk

The 250 MC II and the 500 MC II, are the only bombs in the DCS British arsenal that will fit American aircraft. Only useful fuses are 1 and 11 seconds. Better than nothing. ..
