  1. SSD all the way. See how you find that first. What resolution are you gaming at? If 1080p at fixed 60hz monitor then stay with 970. If at 1440p or high refresh monitor then a new GPU may benefit. But best bet is try SSD first. It really does help just in general system responsiveness with operating system. And for m it did help to remove some micro stutters in DCS. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. As above look to new GPU 1060 with 6gb min. Then if still not happy perhaps look to do total overhaul from that old i7-950. I have similar old system however I increased RAM from 6 to 12GB which helped a little. Also overclocked up to 4.25ghz to reduce as much as possible bottleneck to new GTX1070 GPU. However now I'm at the point where I am going to gut system and replace with either Kaby or Ryzen based rig. Old Asus X58 motherboard is starting to exhibit some flaky behaviour now. 3. Pretty much what Bit said above as far as advise goes. Only pay more money for motherboard if there are extra features/connectivity options that you need. Cheap Asus Prime Aurora Z270 overclocks to 5ghz new Kaby K CPU's just like the far more expensive ROG boards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. You must be missing that good old Sandy even more now. What a horror story. Hope you get the rig that you want up and running problem free soon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. My Rig has always been built with DCS in mind. Just a little wait right now to see what comes about with AMD Ryzen before making decision either to go Intel Kaby Lake or AMD Ryzen. Whatever will give me the best DCS experience. Outside of DCS the only games I play are the Battlefront Combat Mission war gaming series of CM Battle for Normandy, CM Fortress Italy, CM Red Thunder and CM Final Blitzkrieg. They don't require a fast CPU or even near top of the line GPU.
  6. It's good certainly compared to stock 3.06 but it just can't satisfy the demands of the GTX1070 from what I have read. Also this rig has been ticking over for well over 5 years and the motherboard features or lack of is starting to show it's age. Even my wife has given me the green light to upgrade. So it is near time to put this rig out to pasture.
  7. This is what I found in particular with either multiplayer or lot's of activity going on when I had only 6GB of RAM and my i7-950 at stock 3.06Ghz. Doubling the RAM and overclocking by 1.2Ghz did yield decent improvement. But sadly now I feel my old X58 rig is getting long in the tooth. Plus I think the Nvidia GTX1070 is getting tired of waiting on the old CPU it has to work with.
  8. That is the news I was hoping for and I definitely will hold out till early next year for the release of this and Z270 boards. 5Ghz plus on air sounds tasty. Also I will be glad if this is true as from the article "Another thing to note is that Kaby Lake K-Series would be featuring a heatsink that will be soldered using TIM and not cheap materials. This will allow better heat conductivity between the CPU die and the thermal surface." It sounds like the K series Kabylakes are begging to be overclocked.
  9. Nice. Good luck with the build.
  10. Well done. Glad you managed to squeeze an SSD in there. Suggest that you put your OS Windows on the SSD plus important apps/games. Let us know how you find the system after those two upgrades.
  11. Agree 100% with above. I could not put up with a screen split bezel right in the middle. It is either go one big 34" or a triple display. Or VR if you so choose.
  12. Bummer, so will have to wait till after the new year.
  13. Personally I will be going the 4 cores route with HT ability and high overclocking +5Ghz on air potential. I am targeting the new Kablylake 7700k to replace my ageing i5-950 oc'd to 4.25Ghz. I'm just holding off till the reviews come out and hope to rebuild my rig around Christmas/New Year. It's not just the new CPU architectural and clock for clock improvements that I am interested in. It's things like m.sata Nvme SSD drives and other new features on MB along with moving from 12GB memory to 32GB which I am looking forward to.
  14. Found it. Have a read here. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=94174
  15. There is a long thread in the Controller Input Section that a member of the community did some great work for various aircraft. I will check and come back.
  16. My two cents is to get the cheapest 1070 that you can lay your hands on. And if noise is a concern then perhaps avoid any of the blower type designs. This will do 1440p at 60fps plus in pretty much all titles. With DCS 2.0 yes you will get the 60fps.
  17. BitMaster, If I were in your position I would borrow or get something on the cheap to tide you over till KabyLake comes out later this year. I'm just glad I held off a little longer and didn't bow to temptation and move to Skylake. Clock speeds easily over 5 Ghz sounds mighty tasty. For me this is what I am targeting to replace my ageing i7-950/Xx58 combo. Sorry about your Sandy. :( It was one hell of a rig.
  18. That is very unlucky. I've had my AX750 for many years now and still going strong.
  19. Glad you got it sorted. I purchased, what is small by todays standard, a Samsung 830 250 GB SSD for my OS, programs and a couple of games. Now with SSD storage having dropped significantly in price over the last year I have an additional 480GB SSD just for games. The point is you don't have to fork out half a grand on a 1TB SSD. Just buy a 250GB or 500GB SSD to put the games you play along with your operating system and other programs. Use an "old" mechanical drive for storing photos and other data that has a large data footprint. If you are made of money then by all means go out an get a couple of 2TB SSD's.
  20. Same for me. I have seen significant improvement of 20-40 fps in many games. While DCS my min frame rate has improved. The 970 could do 2560 x 1440 res ok but moving to a 1070 I get 60FPS in pretty much everything as per my old monitor 60hz refresh rate. Only my old i7-950 which has been overclocked from 3.07 to 4.25 Ghz is holding back my GTX1070 from further frames.
  21. I have had HT turned off due to overclocking my CPU for sake of stability and lower temps. My annecdotal evidence is that DCS has ran better with HT off withe the CPU running at same clock speeds on vs off HT. I only switch it on in BIOS when working with my photography software which benefits from HT.
  22. Hi Flogger23M, I would get an extra 8GB of RAM to bring it up to 16GB. Playing at only 1080p resolution I think you will be fine with your 970 for now. If this is only for DCS then I would hold off upgrading GPU till after the 2.5 merge comes out later this year. I have seen some gains moving from a 970 to a 1070 in DCS and have been able to turn up eye candy but it is with other games that I have seen the huge 30-60% FPS increases. What I have gained in DCS I guess is higher mins slightly.
  23. As cichlidfan stated above. The only compelling case for picking up a 980Ti over a 1070 is if it is significantly cheaper. I paid AUD $669 for my GTXX1070. I would have only remotely considered a 980Ti if it was under AUD $500.
  24. Compared to what card you have now? As to problems with drivers and Windows 10 I can say that I had no problem moving from a GTX970 to a GTX1070 in Windows 10 system.
  25. Definitely go with the suggestions of 16GB ram over current 8GB, and an SSD for OS and games. You can always store photos and other digital media on a old mechanical drive. If you are going down the Oculus route or 4K monitor then I would target a GTX1080 over a 1070. That Sandybridge 4.6Ghz overclocked needs some better hardware paired with it.
