I'm really interested in the 5 series with 6 cores and 12 threads to see how they compare against the Intel I5-7600k and even the I7-7700k. Ok now just read that the 5 series is planned to be released later in Q2 as late as June. However the Ryzen 7 1700 looks interesting for such a low TDP part. Tweaktown has reported that a OCUK member has overclocked on the Asus Crosshair VI board to over 4Ghz on all 8 physical cores fully stable. That is pretty darn impressive. One other interesting thing to note is that the overclocks were far more successful on this and one other board. Very early days I guess. I'm sure all will be revealed when the NDA is lifted 3rd March and there is a torrent of reviews online. Guess I will have to lock myself away for a week to digest all the findings before determining weather to wait for the 5 series with 6 cores (12 threads) or going the full hog 8 core (16 thread experience).

Just seen AM4 motherboard prices here in Australia. If I decide to go down the Intel route I have been considering a Asus ROG IX Maximus Hero which is AUD429. Yep expensive. The AMD equivalent ROG Crosshair VI Hero is AUD 349, 80 bucks less. So now is to see what AMD has equivalent performance to a Kaby i5-7600k and at how much less. As a package the AMD platform looks like it will have a significant price advantage over Intel. How is Intel going to respond if at all on pricing. Or will they release these two new Kaby CPU's as speculated in last couple of weeks while perhaps reducing pricing on some models. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Second that. I loved his line at the end of his i5-7600K delid video where he showed his workspace desk on camera and said "I don't know if we are working on computers or there's a drug dealer living here".

Thank god AMD looks like it has finally got serious and pulled it's finger out. Now it's just a case of waiting for release and reviews before making a commitment to an AMD or Intel based system. Just another couple of weeks to go hopefully before the real state of play in the CPU market is revealed.

GTX 1070 is awesome for DCS World 2.0
Konovalov replied to Viperrm64's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have taken a pause from DCS and are waiting for an integrated DCS 2.5. If it comes out in the next few months no sweat. By then Ryzen CPU's will be out and my new rig would have been decided upon and built. -
Nice, looks like the end is in sight after what looked like a absolute nightmare of as luck and setbacks for you. Did you go with the cheapie Asus AR Prime board in the end? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well I have new Samsung 960 Evo M.2 drive, 32Gb of new Corsair 3200Mhz RAM and some other parts just waiting for release of Ryzen. Only then when I have a clear picture of the CPU landscape in terms of price and performance will I then put the cash down for either the blue or red team. Hopefully just one more month max to wait. In particular bought the RAM very early as forecast was for significant price rises up till Sep this year. On current pricing I saved myself AUD 75 alone. Why can't my wife fly DCS? :( Some guys have all the luck. :smilewink:

There are three types of people. Those that don't tinker and would never consider "taking a risk" in overclocking their system. Then there are those that build or purchase a new system, run it at stock for a year or two before then overclocking. And then there are those like Bit who have full custom water cooling setups and look to push their system to find it's upper limit from the get go. Each to their own which is one of the great things about PC building.

It has been talked about a lot here regarding the improvements on old v new CPU which is all very valid. But for me I view the upgrade through a wider lense of new motherboard features and connectivity options. Even if you aren't into the hype over LED lighting which seems to be all the rage now on motherboards, there are many new features that benefit the overall computing experience.

Congrats mate. Makes it all the more harder for me to wait for AMD Ryzen before making a decision between the blue and red team.

A balanced build Tintifaxl. Good luck and let us know how it goes and how things run for you.

Well I'm certainly guessing not Prime95 or Aida64 with that small AIO water cooler. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Great pics. Looked a challenge to fit everything in and deal with cable management. But from the looks of it and those oc temps of under 70 you have done a fine job. Enjoy. [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Asus Maximum IX Hero has 4xUSB2, 4xUSB3 and 2xUSB3.1 (A and C ports) all on I/O rear panel. There are boards out there with plenty of ports however the choice is not perhaps as numerous as it once was. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Last two boards I have had Asus and no probs. Always loved their BIOS so when move to Z270 or if AMD is tempting again will go with Asus board. Last MSI board I had was with an AMD Athlon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's the worst bit, waiting for that courier to arrive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Why don't you post up some pics once you have built your rig? Good luck.

Yes it is convenient in that so SATA or power cable is required. Outside of that it is like any old bog standard SSD. The big jump is moving from SATA3 to the PCI-express NVme SSD's such as the Samsung 960Pro or 960 Evo.

I have had no problem with Corsair. Always been reliable for me. Yes, those speeds mentioned by Asus refer to the overclocked speeds that the motherboard supports. Given you are going for the top of the range 7700k I would suggest looking at 3000Mhz or 3200Mhz speeds. Capacity wise 16GB (2x8) or if money isn't a major deal then why not go for 32GB. Some games may benefit slightly from higher memory speeds while others not. My understanding of Kaby and previous Skylake is that memory timings are not as important as the actual memory speeds. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong on this. If you go to the support page for this motherboard on the Asus website you will be able to download a memory qualified vendors list (QVL) sheet which lists all the memory brands and specific models that will work with the Asus Strix Z270F motherboard. Then of course now with memory there are the aesthetics along with practicalities. You might like a certain colour or LED and some now are being released with RGB LED. Or you may be looking for "low profile" memory so that it does not get in the way of your CPU cooler.

1070, i7 4790K, or SSD? When I first moved to SSD over a few years ago I purchased what I could afford which was a Samsung 830 250GB sata SSD. I used it as my OS drive for windows and also for what I considered my essential programs and games. I transitioned my 1TB mechanical Samsung drive and turned it into a storage drive for photos and music. Now I have in addition to my Samsung 830 another 480GB SSD which I use as a Steam drive for other games and my ITunes media. DCS of course has always been on my SSD. The SSD has been one of the most significant developments in the PC arena in the last decade. Any SSD makes a huge jump over a mechanical drive and every effort should be made to set aside some cash for one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

For me I will opt for an M.2 NVMe SSD when I move to a new motherboard which has this feature. Probably a Samsung 960 Evo as the price jump to the Pro is too much for me to swallow.
