Should we keep the autopilot and weapons hint display?
Rotorhead replied to EvilBivol-1's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Voted yes of course. Why to remove something that is optional and can be switched off? Option to have it off by default would be enough. Yes, the weapons display is not very useful so I wouldn't mind it being removed. Or even better, separate it from autopilot menu, so we can switch them on and off independently. EDIT: Oops, it seems that this one is already implemented. Sorry guys. I like the idea of renaming it to "Co-pilot menu" and enabling it only when the other pilot is alive. I hope we will have better control of our crew in the final version, like commanding your pilot to hold hover, fly lower or higher etc, while you're in gunner's position. -
Flying the Shark vs Flyign the Huey - First Impressions
Rotorhead replied to Shein's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Haha, that's right! It won't be easy to overcome that newly gained reflex. When we get some Russian-built helicopter with clockwise-turning rotor, it will be even greater fun to learn everything the other way round. -
Flying the Shark vs Flyign the Huey - First Impressions
Rotorhead replied to Shein's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Tell me about prophetic messages. That's what I wrote back in September 2012 in TOH thread: Ka-50 is like butterfly - with teeth. Very easy to learn the basics, and once you learn how to avoid rotor snapping, you can actually maneuver it VERY violently without any accident. I haven't break the rotors for ages until I deliberately tried to, even if I'm pushing her to the limit. Haven't flown her since I bought Huey though. I have to try it sometimes, I'm sure my precision went up about hundred times. :) -
Don't know about everyone, but you have really spoken for myself!

I was kindly surprised how that "muscle memory" thing works. After first two das, I was crashing all over the place. Not only I wasn't able to hold position even roughly, but not even my heading using pedals, making hovering even harder. Third day, after having a good sleep, I was still fighting the cyclic, but to my surprise, I was able to hold heading without even thinking about it! My feet have "learned" what they are intended to do, and I could concentrate more on my hands instead. Even my hovering is much better now. I can hold her within 10 feet or so, and still improving. Don't want to talk big about myself, but I was really surprised by making such a progress in few days (given that I suck at anything that requires coordination of more than two limbs :music_whistling:). Yes, I have still lots to learn and I know that progress rate is usually highest at the start and gradually drops. If even expert pilots took years to learn it right, I will be happy to learn it in my life. But if somebody like me can learn basics of hovering within three days, I think everybody can. Just practice guys, and then practice some more. But don't sweat it too much. Take breaks, have some sleep, go outside, and then practice again. It surely works for me.

I could type a three pages long post about how great this new module actually is. But I guess that everybody around here already knows, so I'll keep it brief and simply say: Thank you Belsimtek for this wonderful module, and congratulations for entering DCS with such great success. You have proven that 3rd party module can boldly match the quality of the ED ones, and opened the doors for other 3rd party devs. Keep up the good work guys! Now, while trying to tame my Huey, I will already look forward to Mi-8, and hopefully, Mi-24 will come next. Then, I will be in simmer's paradise. Oh, and wouldn't one of you third party guys mind making a civilian rescue helicopter for DCS?

Hi. In Controls dialog, select one of your cyclic axes, and click FF tune button. Small window shows up and you should see checkboxes to both switch X and Y axis and to invert any of them. Experiment with these settings until you get it right (switching axes should theoretically be enough?). Hope it helps.

Great news, thank you for this update Wags! Now I can't wait till next Friday, to learn more about my beloved Flanker coming into DCS. What I dreamt for years is finally getting close to become true! I hope we're still talking about SM variant, the one with multirole capability and stuff. Ya know, those pure A2A jets are soooo boring...*dodges tomatoes and bricks thrown by Eagle folks, hides under table* But no worries ED, I will still buy your Flanker at the first day, even if it's the most basic variant.
-
In this case, your mouse isn't probably assigned to view axes. Check it in input options. Note that if you have more controllers connected, you'll need to scroll right to see mouse in the list.

Facetrack user here, I have assigned hotkey to stop tracking, and selected "View: Stay" and "Engine Tracker: Keep tracking" in the hotkey options. When I switch to gunner, I use this to switch off the head tracking, and then activate mouse look using Lalt+C to allow free aiming. When I go back to pilot's seat, I simply restore tracking using the same hotkey. Nonetheless, I hope that aiming and looking around will be separated in future versions.

It does not trash anything. It's not better or worse than the other modules. But... it's different. Many people here might start to hate me, but I have to admit that I don't like UH-1 much. It's just ugly to me. Unlike many others, I have no personal experience with this type, and, with few rare exceptions, I find the western hardware rather boring. Ka-50 will be my only love forever, unless someone models a Ka-52 for DCS (well, or at least a Hind). So, you may wonder why I bought it as soon as it came out, when I don't even like this helo. It's easy. Because it has something that no other of current DCS modules can offer. First, and, at this moment, only conventional helicopter for DCS, that speaks for itself. Huey is the pure essence of rotary flight. No stabilizers, no autopilots, no nothing. Just collective, cyclic and pedals. And one hell of a pilot to make it work. And that's why I like it so much. The challenge of learning new skill. I always had a huge respect for real helicopter pilots, and now, when I have chance to try out how hard it really is, I respect them even more. In the last three days, I have crashed my Huey countless times, and I will crash it a lot in the future. But I can clearly see my progress. Yesterday, I wasn't able to hold hover at all. Today, I still over-correct a lot, but can at least hold her around one place. It won't be easy to get decent at it but one day, I will be hopefully able to say: "Well, maybe I can't fly a real helicopter, but at least, I am close to it." And that makes me feel kinda good...
-
Heh, I know that feel bro. :) I always knew that flying helos is anything but easy, and that Huey will be waaay harder to fly than Shark, but nobody told me that it will be THAT difficult! :shocking: This damn thing is going all over the place, no matter what I do. But I must admit that my flight time is pretty low. I'm taking it slow and easy, no point in sitting in front of my PC the whole day crashing that thing, just to be tired and frustrated at the end. It will take its time but one day, I will get there too. :pilotfly:

Plus one on that. Freezing TIR is a pretty good solution, but not ideal. Gun aiming tied to view control is weird. Just like in real life, you should be able to aim your gun with your hands (mouse), and at the same time, look around freely with your head.

How to unchain the rudder from trim
Rotorhead replied to PeterP's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi guys! Don't want to be nit-picking, but has anyone noticed that UH-1 has option to disable rudder trim on in default? A little question comes to mind: When a third party developer can have this implemented in a non-complete, beta release, why we Shark pilots have to rely on an un-official solution since, uh... 2009? -
So, where to begin... Just went trough my first few flights, with expected (=shameful) results. At first, I found it nearly impossible to achieve something that could be called a hover. I somewhat managed to get into stable forward climb, but when I tried to land, I descended a little too steep and got caught into vortex ring -> BOOM. Oops, this thing is a lot less crash-resistant than my beloved shark. :) My second landing was "much better" though - that tail was already broken off before takeoff, really! ;) But hey, at least I could walk away from it. Last time I tried (after some 8 attempts), I finally landed it in one piece, but my hovering is still laughable. Guess I will be busy for some time now.
-
:megalol: That's one of those "Oh s**t" moments... I'm pretty curious to see my first flight. I was seriously considering saving my 50 bucks and just downloading picture of the crashed Huey, because that's what I will be looking at most of the time. :) Just joking, can't wait. Soon now...

Another Huey pilot reporting to duty, sir! Just finished updating to 1.2.4, downloading UH-1 now. ETA is 26mins, so I expect my first crash - uh, I meant flight of course ;) - in about half hour.
-
My auto-updater has finally finished downloading. It seems that some serious increase in D/L speed has happened while I was away from my PC. It was pain in the six o'clock position anyways (it took about 6 hours :music_whistling:), but it's done at last. Now just to download UH-1 module and I can go flying! :pilotfly:
-
Product code received. I'm ready for takeoff but held by traffic. Still autoupdating, download speeds down to the floor. :wallbash:
-
WOOOOOOOO! And here we GO!!!! :clap_2: Just came back from work and found this out. Autoupdating now. It's damn slow but who cares, we're almost there. And what's even better, tomorrow it's the first of May and I don't have to work. When UH-1 comes out... ...I WILL BE READY. 8)

Come on, don't you know that alcohol does NOT solve your problems? ...on the other hand, neither does milk. :D

If it means in full EDGE glory then yes, I would be pretty happy with that. Many people complain about the current map, but I believe not because it is not interesting, it's just outdated. Or EDGE map of the Balkans, that would be something for me! Lots of diverse terrain, many possibilities for both historical and fictional operations,... The last news made me believe that one day, all of this will be true! Well, let's hope that EDGE will sort this out.
-
Great, Viper, thank you. Now I wonder if I will be ever able to use my toilet again. :fear:
-
But the Beta access is already considered a pre-purchase, so pre-purchasing before Beta release would technically be pre-pre-purchase. :) I guess they can wait for their money a little while. They know we will buy it anyways. ;)
-
Okay, just to sum it up: 1. Huey and 1.2.4 is hopefully not that far away. 2. From now on, we will get weekly updates not only about next version progress, but also about EDGE, Nevada, and even about other future maps that are already in work or planned. :clap_2::holiday: (Please, be it something with lots of forests and mountains and cities and rivers.) :rotflmao: So many great news in just one day. Thank you Wags. Thanks a lot.
