Roger. I am by no means the authority, but I will post a track when I am home. I personally think the AI would be pretty amazing if there was just a little random error factored in to the tactics, positional acuity, and gunnery perfection. This would give them the appearance of a human opponent. Maybe in the future we can purchase digital versions (Modules) of historical figures that we could face? It could possibly be a way to fund AI refinement? Also, I would still like to see AI wingmen stay with their leader. They almost never do this, unless I am setting up my missions incorrectly. What is your biggest concern with the AI flight model? Is it that he kills too fast or moves in a way that you cannot pursue? And sorry, don't mean to derail the OP away from the tracers discussion if there is more to discuss.

To keep the dream alive I have continued tweaking the WWII Combat server. Please let me know if you run into any issues. I flew with a few people last night and it was a lot of fun. I'd really like to organize a specific time of the week to bring together some more flyers. Don't be deterred by the idea of human adversaries, there are plenty of AI targets and some side missions to complete as well. Of course, we deal with timezone challenges but this can be overcome with some planning. I have no idea when people typically fly though. I've seen people join the server at every possible hour and all days of the week. I would like to hear any thoughts you guys have on the subject.

Been thinking ... relationship between back-stick and speed
Merlin-27 replied to Echo38's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I love this forum. I'm just starting to drink my morning coffee and I get to read about Mach numbers and aerodynamic properties. It's good to be a DCS simmer. :D -
I'm still wondering about all the combat reports of pilots flying over 500mph. Don't try that in ours... you will become a lawn dart.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I could not located a thread for it. I've noticed that the lighting effect for an exploded ground unit will illuminate the immediate area around the object long after the fire has ceased. Is this something that has been identified and marked for resolution somewhere down the line? OR a better question might be, is this something anyone else had noticed? Thanks.

Mustang First Take-Off and Landing: Post your Tracks/Vids
Merlin-27 replied to 159th_Viper's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Flaps were used with heavy ordinance and full fuel loads from what I remember. It's in the pilot training manual. -

I don't see this. Yes, like you said, if you are fighting two AI pilots the second will usually get an easy kill as any good wingman should after he works his way onto your six. But this is due to the incredible gun accuracy of the AI NOT the aircraft performance. If you fly with decent energy conservation techniques you will find, like Echo said, the AI is much easier to outfly than a good human pilot.

The WW2 reveal. Big plans on the horizon.

:D Believe me, if it keeps the fidelity set forth by ED and expands at a more rapid pace... you can call it "PAY ME MY MONEY SUCKA" and I will be the first to add the logo to my signature.

Then we can't have the P-51D or the Dora :(

Digitally simulating analog. Just semantics. :)

DCS: World: War: Two?
-
I'm late to the party, but wow! This has the potential to be some really great news for not only the WW2 guys but DCS overall. More horsepower to the cause. Can't wait.

I also agree that the shape of the fuselage/cockpit has an effect on where the target becomes obstructed. And, despite the larger round, the M61 has a significantly higher muzzle velocity than the Ma Deuce/M2. (3,450 Vs. 2,910 feet per second) which I'm sure helps a bit.

I don't fly the F-15 but I think there is proof enough in the fact that some of us don't notice this "innacuracy" after many many engagements. Are you positive your ranging is correct? Is your position inside the cockpit correct? Maybe try playing with those a little. Do you have TrackIR? If a bullets flight path does not severely drop during a moderately hard turn then something is wrong. As Echo and I have said, it comes straight from them mouths of the guys who were there that this was an issue they too had to contend with. If that is the only point you are pulling the trigger, and you aren't getting hits, you may need to wait for another firing solution.

Haha Classic. "Communicating. Keeping up foreign relations. You know. Giving him the bird" A fellow by the name of "Conquer" informed me he was chasing an F-14 one night. It reminded me of that movie Final Countdown! So, of course I also had to go chase the lovely Aluminum Cloud myself. Luckily he did not engage with missiles and was flying like Cougar after he had his mental breakdown. In the end I was happy to see two chutes deploy :)

Merlin's Combat Server Update: Released a new version of the mission. - 2 Blue secondary mission objectives. - 1 Red secondary mission objective. - Added briefing pages for both sides. - Refined location of enemy AI and varied the skill levels. - Changed unintentional F-14 AI flight to P-51D.

I just watched the track and then took control of the '51. I took a couple hits during the fight but set the 190 ablaze in fairly short order and I'm far from a great combat pilot. The 109 seemed to leave the area. Is the issue that the guns are too powerful or that he won't die... as the track is so named? EDIT: I tried it out a few more times. If the 109 does manage to get on your six while you are chasing the 190 then yes, you are usually hosed. This is true when flying against two P-51s as well. The FW seems to take damage the same as the other AI which we all know, needs work. But he does die.

The only thing I've ever deleted was a response about the P-38 performance when I realized I still had a page of comments yet to read. I felt my response would have been too late in the conversation to even make sense and I realized my point had been made by others. You must miss me very much to even take notice. I'm not sure why your attitude seems so confrontational in almost every post, but I'm going to chalk it up as a feature of your personality. All I ever asked for were facts with credible sources. Some of us just want fidelity, bottom line, and I am happy to let you know if I believe you are correct. And for the record, no you don't have to "go through it all again". I personally feel we have visited this topic about gun convergence ad nauseam and you have plenty of existing threads to respond to without us obliterating this one. So in another attempt to get this one on track again, What ya think about that AI FW190-D9 damage? :) I will be happy to see the AI enemy take a few crippling hits that totally ruin their day, as we do on the receiving end of their fury. If only the guys at ED could make me a better shot, like that damned AI pilot.
-
I know you've stated before that you are not a troll, but wow... You have many existing threads to choose from. Here are a couple of them. This one from back in March contains vague references that say some pilots of some aircraft at some point in the war changed their harmonization to something. Convergence/Harmonization Thread #1 And this one from May, is still waiting for your credible references. Convergence/Harmonization Thread #2 Now, that being said, maybe you should start early on a FW-190 harmonization wish list. And I'm quite sure they will let you harmonize the guns on the eventual DCS P-38 :)

VERY cool video. Post up any more you find!

I believe you are fighting the g-forces while firing in a turn. What is the pipper on the K14 telling you? Many fighter pilots from WWII tell stories of having to lead the target below the sightline. If the guns fire straight with the correct convergence during straight and level flight, then the guns are not your problem.

Watch out! They can be sneaky. The tricky part for me is to retain enough energy after evading to be able to climb vertical with him when he becomes the one running for his life. :) They love to climb till stall speed then just perfectly move the nose toward the ground for the energy reversal. I despise that feeling when you are out of energy, pointing straight up, engine is grumbling, the airframe is shaking and you see that AI bastard smiling as he flies by ready to tear you up again. However... it makes the kills you do get that much more satisfying. EDIT: New special objective on the mission. Check it out.
