F/A-18C Carrier Landing/Recovery: Pro Tips wanted
lmp replied to Growling Sidewinder's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
There were also a lot of people crashing MiGs precisely because they weren't following the procedures, landed overweight, too fast or didn't understand how the SPS works. The MiG is just difficult to land as jets go. I don't care how you land, you can do it inverted for all I care. Play the way you want to play. But you're trying to sell your way as the better way. It's not. It'll make people develop bad habbits that are hard to break. -
Hiding the map Is it possible to hide the digital map on the MPCD (leaving just the HDI)? The map makes the symbols on the display unreadable.

Ground crew doesn't work if the airbase you're at is neutral. The fast mission generator doesn't change the allegiance of the airfield to friendly when you spawn on the ground. A way to fix it is to edit the generated mission and set it manually. That said it's probably not the best idea to start with a combat mission created with the fast mission generator. They are balanced towards modern aircraft.

Briefing Map Route Leg Planning Notation (numbers)
lmp replied to Bearfoot's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
In the second picture I believe it's true heading/distance. I used those numbers along with the DISS coordinate calculator and it got me where I needed to be. -
Is it me or did it get better in 1.5.8? Nothing about it in the changelog...
-
Please, no, I hate those things...

He says as he puts the cargo precisely on target faster than I ever managed...

One possible solution for this would be to make the NS 430 configurable via the "Prepare mission" option in the ME (if it's not already, I haven't checked).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ARK-UD in real life (and in game) can't be tuned to different frequencies than the factory provided ones. It's a specialized SAR radio and the channels are set to various SAR and SAR training frequencies. So while technically you can get it to work by editing the game files, it's not something that would be done in the real world.

Yes, they should be exactly the same or almost exactly the same (the German planes are a bit older, there might have been some small improvement in production which didn't warrant a new block number).
-
Good info guys, thanks!

70 and 65 are one of the original 12 Polish MiGs (as in, not ex-Czech and not ex-German). Only the 41st sqn flies ex-German MiGs, that is true, but since the planes were generally in bad shape not all of them entered service in Poland and 1st sqn had to give up some of their planes to make up the numbers in the 41st.

With the trim setting and rotation velocity calculated as the manual describes it, it takes off just fine for me.

Sorry, that's one aircraft I can't get myself to learn properly. Hopefully someone else will be able to help.

For what radio in what aircraft?

So I was thinking the other day what's the purpose of the Yadro-1A radio. Functionally it's quite limited compared to the R-863 - no preset channels, less useful frequency range... but HF radios to my knowledge tend to have a much better range than VHF/UHF radios. Also the much higher transmitter output power (50 - 100W compared to 8 - 10W) and a smooth adjustment of squelch (not in the game but in real life) seems to support the idea that it's a long range set. So let's put that to the test (a very unscientific one, I know). I spawned the helicopter at Batumi, took off... ok, what's the furthest airfield I can talk too? Tbilisi. No answer on both radios. Ok, let's try something closer and without terrain in between. Sukhumi will do. I ask for a heading and I get a good strong response with the R-863 and a weak one with a lot of noise with the Yadro. Let's try Sochi now. I can still get a response from them (with the squelch off at least) using the R-863, but nothing when I use the Yadro. So was my reasoning bad or is there some room for improvement in the sim? What do you think?

*** AI J-35 Draken AI coming to DCS World!! ***

Thanks for the MiG food, guys :D. -
Nice, thanks.

There are settings for employing slick bombs, guns and rockets from a 20 and 30 degree dive in the manual. Not a whole lot of them, but they're there.

The mode you're using is MSL. In it the radar scans +-4 degrees in elevation when the range is set to 40nm or +-5.5 degrees when the range is set to anything else. So the scanning "box" is 8 or 11 degrees tall. If you use 10 degrees intervals, you should cover most of the airspace, but something might slip between the cracks (esp. in the 40nm submode). Another problem you might run in to in this mode is that in the acquisition phase that vertical scan area shrinks to just +-1.5 degrees. If your target is for example 2.5 degrees above your antenna tilt setting, you will pick it up in the search phase but won't be able to acquire it and start tracking. Generally if the target is blinking, it's probably not in the middle of the scan pattern and you should try to fiddle with the tilt until it stays constantly "lit" on the screen. For that reason I mostly use the MSL mode as a rather crude situational awareness mode and rely on the DM and DG modes for actually engaging anything. Also, a lot of the time not using the radar at all is the right tactic. It is generally much better at letting others know where you are than it is at letting you know where others are.
-
With that little information it's difficult to say what you're doing wrong. What mode are you using? What's your and your target's altitude? If you're in MSL mode, are you actively searching in elevation (using your antenna tilt control)? Is ground clutter a factor?

All but the Mi-24 and MiG-19 were already released, I'm sorry if my wording was unclear. At any rate, there are only two new Eastern aircraft on the horizon, not counting modules which didn't get a licence yet.
-
What do you mean? Majority of modules both available and in development are "Western". This is in fact one of only two "Eastern" module in official development.
-
Since I won't be able to play the game till late Sunday, would anybody be so kind and post some screenies of the new Polish skins? :)

Turn it so that the reticle goes down from the 0 position.
