  1. 22 miles is still pretty far with our missiles at our typical engagement altitudes (being 20,000 - 26,000 feet). The dangerous shots that are closer to burn through ranges are the ones that come from double that height.
  2. Don't be a complacent target that doesn't respect a TWS shot coming from 50,000! :P Also, the Flankers R-27's can make kills at pretty significant ranges if the target chooses not to treat the missile as a threat.
  3. Burn through is closer to 20 miles in HPRF (about 22, from memory). You can definitely make shots at ranges where ECM would make a difference. Especially when it's a complacent target that doesn't appreciate the threat of a head on shot fired from 50,000 in TWS :P
  4. I do agree that the limited range of missiles does reduce the practicality of ECM with the way it is modeled in the sim, in that you burn through quite a bit before any launch range that will give you a decent pK. But it certainly does have its uses in particular situations. Personally, I always take ECM on the Flanker because, well, for starters I don't often find myself in a situation where I need the extra Archers (If I've made it to a merge I usually end up with few remaining missiles and/or low fuel, so I usually end up RTB'ing), and also because I find it can be a handy tool to have available when needed.
  5. It's still good at denying long range shots. Even if you as the pilot can guess with reasonable accuracy the range of the opponent, your radar doesn't have enough information for the missile to fly an intercept trajectory. Instead it will fly a much less energy efficient flight path.
  6. I was going to make this point too. Because the target designator still appears on the HUD, the pilot of the opposing aircraft will see the target designator move behind whatever terrain you have chosen to hide behind. Whilst specific information is still missing, this alone is enough to tell your opponent what you are doing. As Exorcet said, it doesn't mean the tactic isn't viable and useful (in fact, terrain masking can be a very effective tactic), but your opponent will be aware of what you're doing and will try and anticipate where you will appear. Or he will turn around and gain seperation, because who really wants to mess with a Flanker in the hills? :pilotfly:
  7. It will depend on the range of the seeker.
  8. Does this mean that during beta the Mirage won't be able to discriminate between friend and foe? Or will it just function automatically, like in the F-15C until the feature is implemented?
  9. Well there are a lot of things on VEAO's to do list :P That shouldn't mean they get first dibs on all of those planes though!
  10. I was under the impression that this was how all A-A missiles worked, in that they did not consider terrain. The missile will fly the intercept path, irrespective of terrain. That's how they all seem to work in the sim now, and that's how I understood they were supposed to work. It's one of the ways of defeating a missile, driving it into the ground.
  11. This and once you stop aero-braking and bring the nose down it will contribute.
  12. Not sure if this has been covered previously in the thread, so forgive me if it has been. Use AoA to set your speed on final. Aim for 10 degrees AoA (so it will say 20 in your cockpit because it shows cockpit units which is +10). Once you've touched down, pop the airbrake and hold the nose at around 13 degree's on the pitch ladder (AoA should read 23 cockpit units) until you reach 90 knots, then let the nose down gently and get on the brakes. The manual specifies 90 knots, but I just aim for somewhere between 100 and 90, so I don't slam the nose down too hard.
  13. I was under the impression that the Mirage 2000C did use Super 530D's. They just aren't present in the game yet. At this stage we only have 530F's.
  14. They have? What are they doing? Also, why no F-111C? :P
  15. Why no F-111C?? You can't just skip the last version to remain in service! :P
  16. The Australian within me screams for an F-111... One can dream, right?
  17. Uhh, I think it's been in the works for a while now. And as far as I'm aware, we have no idea about when it will be released. Unless they posted something that I've missed where they said not before 2017?
  18. If you're the host of the server that you're on then you wont be able to AAR. So if you were doing this in an mp server that you were hosting, that's the problem.
  19. No matter how well the missiles are modeled, there's always going to be the one major factor affecting how realistically a pilot will behave in MP. The fact that getting shot down won't result in getting captured or killed. Saying that, the people who want to fly as realistically as possible, and behave as if their life is on the line, will treat missile launches differently. I'm not saying that there isn't room for improvement, because there is, I'm just pointing out that there's always going to be the fact that no ones life is actually on the line and that's going to affect how people behave.
  20. Don't forget the A in F/A-18 :P It's going to contribute in a big way to the ground attack scene as well :D
  21. Yes, but the FC3 aircraft blocks/varients that have ECM in game also have it in the real world. It's not an issue of whether or not it can be accurately simulated, rather whether the specific version that is modelled is equipped with it.
  22. Does RWR have memory in a similar way that the radar does? By that I mean , will it continue to display a threat for a few seconds after the emissions are no longer being detected? If so, that might explain it. And to answer the OP, FLOOD mode does give a launch warning now (at least it did in the last version, so I'm assuming it still does in 1.5).
  23. If somebody does do this, be sure to change the fuel state on the Flanker. It's definitely not going to be entering the fight with a full tank.
