Our minds & brains & sims....
Viersbovsky replied to Anatoli-Kagari9's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
+1 Yeah, I had the same idea. Have the metal creak and make the most godawful noises, so you know that you should ease on the stick. That should be easy to implement and you imediately know what went wrong. At the moment, I seem to slowly, gradually ruin my wings and everything seems to go fine... Then I pull a 4G turn that went without a hitch before and suddenly my wings break off. With audio feedback, I could prevent unknowingly damaging the wings. (I still think that the wings should be capable of taking a bit more stress...) -
Same here, still breaks off quite easily... I don´t think it is fixed yet.

Sind sicher auch Qualitätsschwankungen, aber ich habe mehr als 12 Stunden darin investiert verschiedenste Schmiermittel auszuprobieren und alle Kanten abzuschleifen. Egal was ich mache, in irgendeine Richtung bleibt immer störende Haftreibung übrig.

I would really prefer if there was a checkbox next to the option: If disabled, the slider will be greyed out so you can be sure that it is turned off.

At least we now can be certain that EDGE is as good as complete, just lacking finishing touches. These last touches usually take longer than expected though, so I would also rule out December. A stable, working release is also better than something pushed out of the door to meet the December deadline. I can wait a bit longer, I just wish they would start showing off more videos and features as the release is now really around the corner. Also, there will be additional airfields in NTTR! Very nice, I hope they can squeeze in Tonopah for release.

Very nice for a bargain-basement solution. Maybe you can use the handle of your Attack3? I recently got a TM Warthog, and let me tell you, it is not all that it is hyped up to be. The sensor is crazy accurate, handle feels nice, but the gimbal is really flawed - in the end, it is simply a plastic cup scratching on a plastic ball. All the greasing and sanding in the world will not change that fact and the "mechanical accuracy" suffers for it. So, in the end I too have set my mind on building my own stick, and also had the idea of using wood. In the end, I think well and properly used wood incorporating ball-bearings could be applied to make some really nice, sturdy gimbal with really strong springs. It does not have to be all metal. You have ignited a fire in me good Sir, and there is only one cure... :joystick: Gonna drive to home-depot, BRB.

Buf or Feature: variable stick-throw
Viersbovsky replied to Viersbovsky's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
Thank you for clearing that up, i guess I just never realized it then (kind of embarassing after 15 hours in the Dora). With the influx of planes with fly by wire systems like in the Su-27 that dynamically adjust your input and planes taking into account the effects of airspeed, maybe it would be nice to have a "true input" indicator" as well? Just a second, blue cross in the indicator that indicates your joystick input while the red one keeps displaying the "simulated" input? Just an idea though, I am now going back to testing out the ´hog. -
Buf or Feature: variable stick-throw

Force feedback is/was disabled. -
I have finally finished repairing and greasing up my new HOTAS, and decided to take the Dora for a spin in the Intercept mission. So, I activated my controls indicator and was instantly baffled: When rolling, the maximum stick throw went only 3/4 of the way. The pitch worked fine, though. I thought, maybe the Warthog is busted, or badly calibrated, so I used the Thrustmaster calibration program. Still, the same behaviour, and everything looks fine in the axis-tune menu. I then started looking for conflicts with other input devices and re-did all bindings - still the same. After some testing, when I keep rolling (just hold the stick all the way to the left), the maximum possible throw slowly gets ever narrower - down to maybe 20% of the way! It slowly crawls towards the center. I tried other planes, and behold, no such behaviour. I then tried a cold start, and the controls work as they should when on the ground. Then it dawned on me: Maybe the maximum throw depends on airspeed and I just never realized this? Or maybe this is an effect that was simply added in the newest patch? Sooo, the question is, is there something wrong with my setup, is this a bug, or just the way things work with the Dora? edit: Damn it, a typo in the title, go me...

Yeah, I bought some knock-off ceramic Tamiya grease and some highest quality silicone grease on my way home. I have asked my father, an engineer with way more experience than me and he recommended the silicone based grease. The universal lithium grease is actually also pretty good for this application, it just makes a huge mess and will be hard to clean because of the graphite spiking -so I will go with the silicone grease. I am currently trying to pop out those pins out of the ball joint, pretty finicky to do.

MSI GTX970 Gaming OC 4GB First Thoughts
Viersbovsky replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Are you guys using vsync? Some cards seem to whine even at less than 65 fps which is frankly unacceptable. Maybe you got the cards with a high threshold? The norm for the GTX 970 for coil whine to appear seems to be the high two digit, low three digit level, according to some hardware-mag. I could live with that, my monitor can display only 60Hz anyway. Hearing from you, at least it is not a really universal problem. There were theories that Maxwell itself was causing the problem and that is the reason there is no GTX970 reference design ("even Nvidia could not fix it"). I guess people RMAing were simply getting the cards other people RMA´d for coil whine. -
Yeah, I have already seen the video, but thanks anyway, it is a very handy resource for every Warthog owner. Mine seems pretty bad, I guess there are some very bad ridges in there because it really hates moving now... I don´t think anything is broken, though. Gotcha, I hope I can find this stuff anywhere. Should be readily available but unfortunaltely it does not seem to be in stock in any hobby store in my vicinity. On the other hand, I just found a huge tube of "universal grease" buried in my tool cupboard. It is lithium soap based and is spiked with graphite, NLGI class 2. Does this stuff corrode plastics? Wikipedia says it is non-corrosive but I just want to make sure. The tube is also ancient, at least 15 years old, but I guess this stuff does not go bad quickly? edit: That universal grease I have might be a bad idea, since graphite is a pretty good conductor. May cause some short circuits if it touches PCBs.

MSI GTX970 Gaming OC 4GB First Thoughts
Viersbovsky replied to JaseGill's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have heard that there are significant problems with "coil whine" across all versions of GTX970 (the coils in the card oscillate and thus work like a speaker, making high pitched, very loud noises). Some returned their cards multiple times and still got one maiking significant noises. What is the experience of you guys with this? I am itching to buy one for christmas, but this is making me hesitate. -
So, since today I am the proud owner of an almost new second hand HOTAS Warthog and well, there is already the stiction problem... I like to take things apart and put them back together, so doing this should be a piece of cake for me. Hell, I even had to take my pristine PS4 controller apart and grease all the axis, it seems nothing works just out of the box anymore. The question is what grease to use for the HOTAS. Reading around various forums there are pretty different opinions on what grease to use. Some recommend Molykote, others dryfluid. For you guys who did an "oil change" on your HOTAS Warthogs already, what is your experience? And furthermore, can someone recommend a grease for me that is readlily available in Europe (available at conrad would be nice)?

The MPU6050 sensor is already 6DOF, the problem for translation will be drift, drift, drift. That is why Oculus uses an IR system like TrackIR for translation.

I just bought some DVDs with old remastered documentations from the 70s and 80s with lots of interviews with actual Airforce and Luftwaffe pilots - one P51 pilot in particular said that he felt the Mustang was "probably 2% better than the BF109". Not an accurate assesssment by any means, but in general the consensus seemed that P51, FW190 and BF109 were pretty much on equal footing when in a dogfight.

Su-27 Open-Beta chit-chat and first impressions!
Viersbovsky replied to JulienBlanc's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
Wow, I love this thing! Really fun to fly, and the direct input mode will come in handy in dogfights. I have been flying in unassisted mode for quite a bit and you can pull of some pretty extreme maneuvers - just never push the stick forward, you will flip over and black out before you realize that something went wrong. It is not that hard once you get the hang of it, but maybe that is all that space-plane flying in Kerbals Space Programming finally paying of. They act equally toxic to elevator input. So thank you for this great plane! -
"Strich" means "line" or "dash" in German. Thus it think the addendum of the document refers to it: "Conversion number for 1(dash) = 3.375' = 0.9875%0" Maybe that helps clear things up. edit: Yep, after some quick calculations it is Artelleristischer-Strich, or 0.05625° or roughly 1 mil. Theta 0 is simply the angle of the right triangle you get when drawing x and y as its legs.

Do it yourself collective?

PeterP has some experience, I think: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=86015 -
I mean regular multiplayer where each side has their own airbase(s). They are now pretty close, so if one side has Groom Lake and the other has Nellis then most of the action will take place above Creech - you would have to first divert the planes a bit outside to get to use some other parts of the map. This will work for organised squads with specified rules of engagement, but will be problematic for weekend flyers like me. Otherwise, the potential for training and sightseeing is endless.
-
That is a bit of wasted potential, since all those 3 bases so close to each other makes red vs blue multiplayer very tricky - this way it is going to be mostly limited to training, as you said. Too bad since what we´ve seen from Las Vegas shows an amazing attention to detail. It is a bit like buying a Ferrari and only driving it to do grocery shopping 15 minutes from home. Oh well, this will probably not change at this point in development - it will make a great training range still and very awesome to fly in the choppers. It will be an amazing proof of concept for EDGE and I can´t wait to get my grubby fingers on it.

Interview with Leatherneck Studios
Viersbovsky replied to Count Sessine's topic in Heatblur Simulations
I get it, this is just some wild goose chase! (Although the Tomcat would be awesome) -
To be honest, I am mostly looking forward to EDGE/NTTR. While all the planes I have may be nice, the very inconsistent performance makes some of them almost useless (I am looking at you Mustang, dropping from 40fps to 3 whenever I pull the trigger). Therefore, I am not that inclined to buy new planes when I may not even be able to properly fly most of them (although that BF109 looks so tempting... Screw it, I am gonna buy it anyways). Don´t take this the wrong way, I just can hardly await when EDGE finally lands - and I think ED feels the same.. So yeah, love the screens (earth curvature!), and hope EDGE will bring more consistent performance and all the other little gimmicks we dream about. I also think multi-crew support will open up an entirely new dimension to this simulation. I am looking forward to christmas/Q1 2015, keep on rocking guys!

Nice, looks like EDGE will be out by christmas if everything goes smoothly.
