I've predicted the coast off of Norway before, and I'll do it again. ;)

I wish someone could make a poll that would be of some actual value to ED, third parties and consumers alike. No offense to OP and the makers of every single other poll out here on these forums. I'd just like a poll of some -use-. A good poll could introduce some 30-40 airplanes in random order, complete with okay images and a brief description of time in service, their role and arsenal. Such a poll should include a five-point scale by which we can evaluate the relative popularity or devotion each module could boast.* A digital poll could even assemble the airplanes the respondent has marked as most likely to buy (random order again), and then ask the respondent to arrange these by priority of purchase. I'm not saying ED doesn't do market research, but I've seen no evidence that they do. Nether have I seen LN or BST perform any. Meanwhile the entirety of their userbase** believe to some degree or another that developers factor in popularity when they decide on what products to make. * How likely are you to buy xx? Not at all // Not likely // Undecided // Somewhat likely // Definitely ** This is a generalization, but it's a fairly obvious one

Maybe one day in the future (Moore's law etc) we'll get a missile based on large-eddy simulations instead of 'just' SST k-omega. :)

Operation "Blue Flag" - 24/7 PvP Campaign - ROUND 8
scaflight replied to gregzagk's topic in Multiplayer
I'd vote with my joystick if it wasn't broken. Great change! This sounds like it'll be a very fun round. -
You guys gonna do an AMA or something at some point? I'd really like to learn which aircraft you would personally most love to see in the game - and possibly why. Paying no mind to whether it's an aircraft that LN have planned down the line or not.

Try to fly inverted ;)

It's 2016 and people still use red text on green background. Jesus weeping christ.

I'd be very interested in more information! One of the elements mentioned in Med Invasionen i Sikte (p. 16) is the movement of Russian forces by way of helicopter, where est. 100 Mi-4 would fly at least twice a day. I can imagine that this force, partially shielded by Migs, could present us with a very nice mission for a invasion-type campaign.
-
The short answer was offered above. No, no way. To me, the Mig's baffling array of ergonomically hostile design choices makes controlling it something of a battle. Learning how to in the first place is definitely something that needs doing piecemeal. Compared to the A-10C however, the Fishbed's systems are easy and not very interconnected, so you very quickly get past the initial WTF-threshold. My personal preference has been to 1) memorize and understand the startup procedure, and then 2) reduce the most useful procedures to just a few clicks on the joystick. I mean, you can -definitely- reduce the cockpit workload, if moving functions to a HOTAS qualifies as doing that. For 1), I dry-rehearsed the startup based on just images. To this day I count the switches as I go through, so I know the extinguisher is #6, fuel pumps #10-12, etc. The first time I played the Mig, I could pull off a cold start without a hitch. Not necessarily able to troubleshoot any unforeseen issue, but fortunately our aircraft are always perfect on mission start. I by no means pretend that this is a checklist-ready startup, but it's worked for me so far. Regarding 2), I think we all try to find a compromise between making things easier, and making things realistic. As I have the SAU (autopilot) modes mapped to my stick just as the model does, it's kinda realistic. But I also use the weapon selector knob, with IR/SAR, left-right movement of the knob, etc, assigned to the HOTAS left coolie. That's not very realistic, but you ****ing go ahead and switch to IR missiles after you're in the merge, trackIR bouncing all over ;)

I'm personally holding on to the fantasy of legacy Blue Flag, a version without 120s, ETs and the like. Oooohhh that'd be so sexy! A more or less BVR-free server with big, (semi-)organized flights. <3 edit: derp

Thanks Cobra. Can you shine some light on what was going on, for those of us that are keen to learn more about the internal workings of the plane, the code, etc? Is there maybe a raycasting function that only looks to the bottom of the aircraft to help determine whether ground clutter drowns out the target reflection?

... Way to build my confidence before buying the module. How long could LN's Viggen campaign possibly be?
-
Thanks a but-ton for the track+video! So if TheFace had had his radar on stby, he'd pretty much have had a good jump on you?

I think this is drifting a bit off topic. :)

Cessna 172. You wish I was kidding.

Hey Cobra and the rest of LN team. Appreciate the update. Quick comment from me: The stuff you have made so far has been astonishing, and you've kept updating, fixing and documenting things. You've launched an extremely polished product in the Fishbed, and you kept on polishing after. You are a head above the competition in those regards! That's why I will not hesitate to buy modules from you again and again. Because I know the product will be great. You seem to aspire for perfection, not just 'good enough'. That's what I value as a customer. I really hope that you don't let me down (not saying that in a derogatory way), but take your time and keep on polishing. Praise aside, I think perhaps you should look at earlier ETA announcements and see if the math behind your estimates can be improved. ;) (edit: I think we DCS users would actually be interested in some in-depth developer's take on ETA experiences! It definitely seems difficult to make them with any precision.)

There's definitely a need for a Norwegian livery! This was a mainstay until the 1990s, serving alongside the F-16. The differences are definitely noticable, but I'm sure there aren't any fans (Norwegians) who wouldn't suspend their disbelief, simply for the sake of finally getting to fly a high fidelity Norwegian fighter over proper winter terrain. :D [ame=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFLxGRcEc8w&feature=youtu.be]This Youtube video[/ame] ^ This video contains a handful of closeups.

Thanks for the elaborate response, renhanxue. Your initial disclaimer touches on something I wasn't terribly bothered with: the comparison of aircraft as opponents. Whenever the question of "is X like Y" raised, there's always an implicit or explicit question of quality there, of which aircraft will destroy another and thus emerge victorious, or 'better'. I wasn't really interested in that, but you still pointed out the minefield, and I acknowledge that. :) As some DCS forum threads prove, the chauvinism of some users very quickly erodes what could be helpful analyses. As such, I have to believe there are sound and analytical ways to generalize and compare combat aircraft without bothering at all with which destroys which. Typical ones that we DCS pilots deal directly with, such as maneuverability, payload etc, but also things that real air forces are likely to pay attention to: maintenance requirements, ease of operating at low speeds/takeoff/landing. Thank you for sharing a document that touched on some of those.

Comparing Swedish fighters/strikers to NATO equivalents Out of curiousity -- how do the Lansen and Draken, at their respective heights of service, compare to other aircraft? Can we make rough comparisons to F-86, Starfighter, Thunderchief or first F-4 when it comes to radar? The Viggen has a lot of unique whistles, not to mention firsts, but I've mentally placed it (or rather the several versions) approximately in the category of the F-16A.

Any chance of a v3 Youtube clip or two for us without the M2000? :)
-
Sorry OP, I can't deliver a specific answer to your request. But I'd advice that not every army is the US Army, and not every conflict is in 2016, so how about you free up your imagination and enjoy this amazing aircraft in a situation where it's not invincible? ;) I mean, it's not exactly a Biafran Baby...

It's late March! Aaaanytime now! Just a few hours! .. right? Yeah right :p

I think Cobra and LN should get Simon Stålenhag to do some boxcover art for the AJS  Sure GRAFEEX are fantastic on PC nowadays, but do they capture the nostalgia of a childhood spent in the back of your parents' Saab 90 and dreaming about jet fighters? :smilewink:
