Yep, tried it, it "magically" locks onto the first truck, which is certainly not the vehicle you want to fire on. The convoy is two trucks, followed my an SR, and further down the line some launchers, the idea being, use 1 of your 2 mavs to make out the SR or the 2 launchers. I just tried it again, made the contrast so black and green a two year old could lock onto it, big small, zoomed in so the vehicle occupied the entire screen, 1 pixel in size, whatever, no dice, it would not lock on. The same pod sitting on an A-10 in point mode grabs every telephone pole, car, blade of grass, truck, whatever, pretty much locks on to everything but what you want it to, the 18, couldn't get it to lock on to the Burj Khalifa... seriously, try the mission, it's a joke.
-
@Recluse Oh? Am I missing something? There's a string of 8 or so vehicles in the convoy, I used GMT to slew the FLIR to the right place, but, does GMT have the fidelity to pick out a single vehicle out of the pack? The whole convoy looks like a single contact on the GMT screen.

It's crazy the pros and cons of each airframe. I tried the PG Instant action mission titled Convoy Hunter... need to lock one moving target and then bomb 2 targets... 45 minutes of f***ing around with the tpod, couldn't lock a target. Opened the mission in ME and swapped F-18 for A-10C, took out both convoys (all 20+ units) in 4 minutes and didn't need to use my mouse/VR controller every 5 seconds to click some MFD buttons or weapons designate. Man it's awesome for some things, but for moving targets... a simple feat in 2021... F-18... nope. A-10 is so OP, it will continue to track while masked through a forest, even if the vehicle changes directions or stops. It has 6th sense *facepalm*

He unlisted the video, so I can't quote it, but I'm fairly certain he literally started the video with, you can get equivalent resolution with more FPS, but alas, it doesn't really matter, it was pretty negligible anyway and far from the real issue in DCS. It's not square root, it's just half, so yeah, PD 1 @ 100% = PD 0.5 @ 400%, which most peeps agree with those settings, they get about the same performance. And yes, I completely agree, PD and SS is added up and DCS engine does the render, albeit, there is the potential that the DCS engine is making decisions based on PD number for optimizations, etc, not the aggregate pixels, so who knows. All I know is that I can't even get 90 FPS on the main menu anymore after 2.7, and I'm done wasting my time banging this thing with a hammer. White knights and praises for days, so again, either I'm smoking something, or I need to get what they're smoking, cause, its nothing but frustration here. Cross-eyed, black screens, blue screens, steam VR has crashed, cotton balls for days in the sky, unreal. I also just noticed, because I was messing about with the settings and resting my HMD on top of my head, so my view was pushed really far back, and I was staring at the fabric on top of the seat of the a-10, and I was like, wow, that looks really nice. Then I looked at the dash, sparkle sparkle, razzle dazzle. Hmm, look at the ground, looks good, but buildings shimmering like its hot. Back to the seat cover, hmmm, really really looks nice. Like, HL: Alyx nice. Back to the cockpit dash, sparkle sparkle. Then I realized, it's only the white pixels, sparkling out of control, white rooftops, white needles on the gauges, on the edge of... everything. Seems to me a big part of the issue here with shimmering is perhaps over exposure or something.

@ShaunOfTheFuzz sorry you were replying just as I was making an edit. Could you take a look. And I took screens of my mirror and the quality is definitely improved with less shimmers using 0.5 @ 400%, unless I'm on some serious placebo drugs. Major waste of time on that video anyway. I'm not arguing one way or another, but seriously... all that time to explain that on his particular rig, and the orig author, he was comparing 2666 vs 3337, or an effective PD of 1.12, so maybe that explains it, but he didn't bother carrying out the sentiment of the test, setting 0.5 PD and setting an SS to match the equivalent value and then test the FPS!? Therefore, not debunking, just adding more speculation to the mix. *facepalm*

Curious where the math comes from, I couldn't find a source. How does .5 PD + 400% SS = 2160? For G2, using his spreadsheet I would assume I get 1.0 PD @ 100% SS = 3160 and at PD 0.5 @ 400% SS (6324) I get... 3162 In both those scenarios, I get quite a difference in FPS, and most of the comments to the original video saying they noticed a difference were coming from G2 users. What am I missing? Not sure why he couldn't make it simpler... He's got 140% in his Global settings, although according to him, 100% already has 40% for barrel distortion, but then he sets his to 140% anyway. With 100% global and 150% per app, I would expect per app. With 50% Global and 200% per app, do we get 100%? If so, why would you run tests at 140% of 140% in a proof test?

I feel bad for the effort you're putting in here. It's a shame, because it's not you and it's not your hardware, it's the software. Perhaps you only/mostly play DCS, so you don't have a comparison to realize most other titles run flawlessly, then you'd know where to point the finger. I just loaded 2.7 to give it a try, and I get 90FPS at menu screen, load any mission, quit back to menu, it's fluctuating between 75,82 and 90. What title can't achieve 90FPS on the menu screen? Using same settings I was getting 90FPS in game, now I get 37-47 in game and 75 in the main menu, sad rofl. Just take a break or go back to flatscreen until they figure it out, no sense in frustrating yourself further.
-
Maybe not for you, it made an immediate impact for me. I can run PD 0.5 and SS 400% at the same FPS as PD 1.0 and SS 100%.
-
Edit: My text got deleted.. I tried PD 0.5 and 2, while changing Steam SS from 400% to 50% respectively. Perhaps a little nicer with 1.0+ but maybe placebo, either way, not a fix. Picture says 1000 words? Not ideal, but I used my phone to snap a pic of my right lens. Left side is desktop mirror. Here's what I'm seeing:

That's what I was hoping. There are so many people posting how great they look, but they look absolutely terrible for me, I am sincerely hoping there is "that one thing" that is simple missing in settings or something.

Stuck my head in to test 2.7. On my flat screen, the clouds look, okay'ish I guess, I'll leave my opinion for another day, but in my G2 HMD, they look almost completely white and cartoonish, there's practically no contrast. On the reflector/mirror, it can see much more gray and depth in the clouds, but in the headset they're almost featureless white puffballs. Standard or ultimate, and adjusting gamma did nothing to solve it. Anyone else, any ideas? PD .5, Steam SS 400%, 2080 Super.

Ok, I gave it a go... the conclusion would be, I'm hanging up the towel for a year, again... Unfortunately this product brings more frustration than enjoyment, I gave it up for 6 months and didn't regret it, I guess I'm going to do it again. I'm a little tired of the applause at the size of the changelogs when 90% of it is bug fixes, and I've never seen so many bugs in any game every 30 days. Anyways... for those who are interested and want to continue the pain, my findings: Specs, I9 9900K, 2080 Super, 32 GB Ram, Reverb G2, all done with F18 Free Flight Caucasus. PD 1.0, 100% SS: ~60 FPS PD .5, 500% SS: ~60 FPS Things I noted: I've been using reprojection from day 1. After playing around with it some more, it really is pro/con. With it turned off, I noticed far less shimmering from medium altitude, but the labels/text of controls, etc in cockpit are a bit hazy when moving your head. With re-projection on, the cockpit is crisp, but I get a lot of ghosting and jaggiest out the window. Especially if looking sideways and down at the terrain in a turn. The shimmering in this title is out of this world. 0.5 PD and 500% SS certainly reduced the shimmering quite a bit as long as I could maintain 60+ FPS. When I launched Through The Inferno, A10C-II, I was down to 45 FPS on the tarmac, and the shimmering was like being on a dance floor in a techno club, but after taking off things were ok. The fact that shadows/LoD are per eye was extremely noticeable during the testing. I came to realize the majority of shimmering and feeling like I was cross-eyed was coming from the fact that shadows were being rendering differently in each eye. Disabling terrain shadows altogether made a huge difference in shimmering. This isn't really just a VR issue either. The most immersion breaking thing in this sim IMHO is the shadows popping up like toast and the drastic LoD changes of trees, etc. They should both be unnoticeable if done right, one LoD should blend into the other. In regards to -203 error... Launch Through the Inferno, select A-10C II, Fly Now... hit ESC, change role, F/A-18C... blue screen in HMD. Try again, fly plane, crash plane, -203. Basically I cannot respawn, even if I reduce my settings enough that I'm at 90FPS and fluidly playing. Blue screen and -203 only happens in DCS. I have to run local dedicated server and launch a separate client if I want to be able to respawn. Luckily, I never respawn, if I die, I die, and I'll restart from the beginning but it's a major PITA for MP. Cheers and GL

Very interesting, I will give it a go tonight and report back, thanks.

Anyone made any progress with this. I just got my headset 2 weeks ago, and I've yet to have an uneventful flight in DCS. Any other VR game / experience works fine. DCS though, I just launch Through the Inferno mission, select a plane, no issue. As soon as I try to switch aircraft or even respawn in the one I was in... Oooops, SteamVR error -203. I basically have to restart DCS for each respawn. What a major PITA. There's also a really noticeable lag, when in the weapon loadout screen and right clicking a weapon slot to choose a weapon. Edit: Also interesting, based on a comment on Reddit, if I have poor frames, which sometimes happens at the start of a mission sitting on the ground, I just alt-tab out and back in (just alt-tab twice quickly, from a VR perspective all I notice is the message at the top telling me my input is directed outside the app) and poof, my frames more than double. Works every time...

Reverb G2 user here, same issue. Easiest way for me to reproduce is just accidentally hit the steam menu button on the controller... menu comes up, some more epilepsy inducing flashing and then steam vr fails, -203, and DCS still looks ok in the reflector. Switch aircraft, same deal. Sneeze, cough, hiccup or blink too fast seems to cause it as well. Free flight, simple mission, reload, F10, bounce around the system like a boss, CTRL-SHIFT-TAB, new aircraft, whatever, no issue, so certainly related to being under load, but the menu button seems to kill it every time. I9-9900K, 32GB, 2080 Super, 52% Steam Resolution, 45-90 FPS usual.

[SOLVED] Frequent stutters, even when installed on SSD
Vanguard replied to gercarst's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Interesting. Nothing kills an SSD drive faster than putting your temp folder on it, but I do have about the best HDD drive, so perhaps that's why I don't witness your issue. If you're going to run this way, and that's fine, just ensure your pertinent data is not on the same drive, or 3 years from now you'll be posting here asking how to recover it. -
Mind sharing the .miz so we can have a look and see if we can find a solution? Even a watered down version of it if it's something secret you're cooking up.

This is an absolute must have if you're entering CDU wind data: https://throughtheinferno.com/mod/recoils-multimap-cdu-wind-briefing/

Awesome, thanks deadlyfishes, convoys are the one element I really wanted to see added. Do they have a particular destination, such as a friendly airfield, increasing the threat of not dealing with them?

Please tone down some of the directi fire accuracy

I think I saw some changes to the wordings of some of the skill levels lately, which is good. From a scale of 1-5 they should be named Rookie, Novice, Average Veteran, Cyborg. I think the real issue is, most missions have everything set to level 5, which is effectively Cyborg, so they are doing what they should be IMO. The real solution is to use lvl 3, as it's "average" and more appropriate. I think people spam lvl 5 because they think it will solve all the other inherent problems with the AI... and it doesn't ;) I agree with what has been stated already, I'm simply saying we, the mission creators are exasperating the problem by trying to use the highest skill level to solve other AI problems, and it doesn't work and makes this situation even worse. -
Not everyone is able bodied and 30 years old bro, none of these asks should be frowned upon, they don't have be enabled in MP and gives a broader group access to the sim. If people are asking for a core change, I can understand, but an option that you don't have to use and would benefit others... doesn't hurt to ask, except in this community haha. My old man is over 70, has some shakes in his hand and can't AAR to save his life. Other than that, completely fluent and able with the aircraft. We can't coop any missions that require it. It would be nice to rock up to the tanker and I could realistically AAR while he goes and fights the basket for a bit and then head into the AO. Why not? How does that hurt you?
-
Yep, I'll buy that, true enough. What's really interesting about that is I just recently completed the Operation Exigent Riviera (highly recommended BTW), and it really taught me to manage fuel for the 18. I thought it was a really thirsty bird, but after being forced to manage it properly, I realized it was me. No doubt, in A2A with plenty of AB, AAR is required, but I'd argue with proper fuel management that entire campaign could be flown without it. IRL these boys are often flying further than the width of our maps before they even enter the AO! Now I fly around 60% throttle in-bound and out-bound of the AO, and it's a world of difference. 315 IAS @30,000ft is over 500 knots TAS!
-
To each their own. I've never really needed to AAR, I just do it for funzies. If you don't have much time, I can't imagine a mission long enough to need AAR that you have have the time to play anyway. But whatever, why not pick unlimited fuel and just fly behind it for a bit to make yourself feel better? whats the difference, a graphic connection between the two aircraft giving a hollow sense of accomplishment? MAC is coming, maybe it will address such a thing, it is the primary purpose of it if I understand correctly.

Correct mate, this wonderful new forum gives less visibility when hitting "new posts" to see what category they fall under *facepalm*. And yes, I'm using the JTAC mod for LL and been doing so for so long I've forgotten it wasn't stock. So in "vanilla" without a LL waypoint in the F-18, you're correct, flying without a TPOD would be a PITA.
