  1. Just my 2 cents, and before I give them, I absolutely understand your point. Some people do play these simulations for years and years. My 2 cents are from my personal perspective, which is just that, personal. I have found, over the years, that I move on to newer sims due to newer technology, and very rarely have to fire up old simulations to get what I want. As hardware and software advances, I am always amazed by what new simulations can do, and end up moving on and not looking back (well, looking back for comparisons, sure, but not for entertainment). So for someone like me, not knowing if ED will be around 5 or 10 years from now is probably not too much of a concern. That being said, and back into the "global" and not "personal" mode, as protections go, it seems to me that ED has come up with a pretty good compromise. The fact you can uninstall and reinstall Black Shark multiple times, or that you can swap a certain amount of hardware without using any activations is great. Sure, an OS re-install or big hardware change will require using one, but most people don't really go through that too often (emphasis on "most", and hopefully Windows 7 will help in that arena). Well, there you have it, my "for what it's worth" moment. And it ain't worth much, me thinks ;).
  2. Right, it works in that way, meaning if you takeoff and are flying along for some time and don't see the speed on the top left of the HUD, chances are your INU is not working properly or on. But the other way around doesn't work, as I described, you can't depend on that speed showing up before taking off as proof the INU is ready to go as it never will display at first. Just sharing info so more and more people can acquire the knowledge :).
  3. No, not the plunge to buy DCS: BS, I have had that since it came out, that's a no brainer! The plunge was to buy my first HOTAS, and I went with the X52 (not the Pro)! I had asked around in the forum for opinions between that and the Cougar, and the Cougar (with all of the almost necessary upgrades) was out of my price range. that and I figured that for my first HOTAS I shouldn't spend too much, to see what HOTAS is all about, and then maybe upgrade in the future when I know exactly what I am looking for. For the record, I got it at Best Buy for $99 plus tax. I am very impressed with my first impressions (how's that for a catch phrase!). I fired BS up and went for a flight. Keep in mind that I have a Microsoft FFB2 stick (which I love, and may continue to use together with the X52 throttle), so going to a non-force feedback stick was an interesting change. But the X52 stick as very, very smooth in motion, very accurate in positioning, and all the buttons seem like are positioned in places where my fingers will have no problems going to once the muscle-memory kicks in. I really like the fact that there are three MODES to toggle between for button assignments, so it looks like I could have one for Takeoff/Landing, another for Flight, and a third for Combat. The problem will be remembering all that! I also like the ergonomic design of both stick and throttle, lots of human factors studies into that, it looks like. The materials used for construction are pretty nice too, and time will tell about durability. I did snap the rotors right off the first time I tried trimming, since it is pretty different than doing it on the FFB2, but I am starting to use a technique suggested here in the forums of adding a little trim at a time, and it seems to work. All in all, I am very happy an excited about finally acquiring a HOTAS, and very happy so far (3 flights) with the apparent qualities of the X52. Thanks to everyone that pitched in with suggestions, and to everyone else in the forums, this is a great place for information. Oh, and if you have a killer X52 profile out there, post here! I've seen a couple other posts with those but have not tried any yet, and am thinking it might be better if I create my own, to better recall where all the assignments go, but i am definitely open to suggestions. Best regards,
  4. Hi MTFDarkEagle, Correct me if I am wrong, but that number (the ground speed, on the top left of the HUD) will only show up once you take off, and after a little while, since the doppler has to realize you're moving. If you turn the helo on and stay on the ground, it will never show, even though the INU has finished alignment. At least that's my understanding.
  5. From the English manual, page 2-19: "Laser Designator Panel 2-13: Laser designator panel 1. The small “СБРОС ЛДП” laser designator reset button is used to cease laser illumination, if it has not already timed out after 20 sec. [LALT + LCTRL + O] 2. The laser range finder / laser designator mode toggle “ЛД-ЛДП” switch is located directly below the HSI and is set to the “ЛД” laser range finder position by default. [LSHIFT + O] When set to the “ЛДП” laser designator position, the laser can be used to designate targets for weapons such as the Kh-25ML, Kh-29L or laser bombs. The Ka-50 can search for a target and illuminate it for 20 seconds by a second press of the ENTER key. This switch does not affect “Vikhr” employment."
  6. Hi pauldy, Check here for the info on activations/deactivations.
  7. Good point, and I confirm, no need to hit the Enter in between the Lat and Lon, only after both have been entered.
  8. If you are worried about the route the autopilot will follow, forget the ABRIS, that's just for reference. As someone put it in another post, it is like a GPS in your car, it will only tell you when to turn, but not turn for you. The PVI 800 waypoints is what you need to reprogram. Maverick has posted a very nice step by step. Try changing your waypoint number 1 and 2, then taking off and engaging the Route mode of the autopilot. Best regards,
  9. AlphaOneSix, thank you once again, this is awesome stuff! Should we expect a regular influx of info like this? ;) Best regards,
  10. A quick scroll down the assignments list in BS will show you what is currently assigned. Then, change as you see fit.
  11. I agree, I love the track feature, but it would be much more useful if we had a way to at least rewind.
  12. Hey Reticuli, Sorry for my ignorance, what does the above script change/do? Thanks,
  13. Hey Tango, You would think the Weapons Control System switch would power the whole system, but it seems to power only the lights, the system works just fine with it off.
  14. Here it is.
  15. 4. Because the Black Shark is more maneuverable than the Black Hawk. (Sorry, had to do it ;))
  16. Hey MBot, Yeah, I agree, perhaps just a very small amount would be sufficient? It would also help to start the yaw before coming to zero speed, if the hammer head is being performed at true vertical, since with some forward speed on your side the rudder can help. I am thinking pitch to vertical, kill collective, as speed is close to zero yaw fully, give it a little collective, when nose is pointing down kill collective again, then increase collective during recovery. Haven't tried that yet.
  17. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=35968 Found it via the forum search with keywords "campaign cold dark"
  18. But it will also make the helicopter move horizontally, as the original poster mentioned, which is not what he wants. I don't have an answer for you, at least not yet ;). Let's see if someone else posts in here.
  19. Exactly!
  20. Hey GF_Mastiff, i didn't find any track files by that name. I found one by the name "LastMissionTrack.trk", which got me hopeful, until i realized I had flown after this multiplayer and the last one was not it. Then I found files with names such as "client-20090118-155833.miz.trk", I have about 8 of these with different dates, but none of them were the multiplayer. I did get it recorded in Tacview, but as soon as the Mi-24 is considered "dead", it disappears from Tacview, which it didn't in the game, as I described above.
  21. Two buddies and myself were on a multiplayer, and one of them engaged an enemy Mi-24 with guns, and hit him three different times. On the third it was pretty clear the enemy lost engine power, and started loosing altitude fast. We were only about 200 meters above some pretty mountainous terrain, and all three of us watched in awe as the Mi-24 made a very decent autorotation with gear up and some forward speed, flared very well, skidded through the terrain for what seemed like 50 meters, then came to rest with the rotor still moving and the helo on fire. Some short seconds after that it exploded. It was so realistic that one of us was saying "Are they getting out/ Are they going to get out?" referring to the pilots! One of the comments made by me is that that scene alone was worth my $50 for this simulation. Absolutely amazing!
  22. Offtopic, but Peyoteros "Location" on his profile deserved mention, you cracked me up!
  23. That's because in Russia commercial and military aircraft only fly using QFE. Even international aircraft flying in are only given QFE settings. The designers are just being realistc ;).
  24. It's RCtrl + Pause to display frame rates.
  25. Wow, a new find for me, how cool! Thanks for the heads up!
