Since the discussion has stopped... here's another landing comparison video between Huey, Hip and Gazelle. I was quite surprised that it took me almost as long to land with the Hip than with the Gazelle but I "lost" too many time by reducing speed. And the flight to the ship was simply faster with the Gazelle. Either way, the Huey was the clear winner. If the landing is on a non moving spot and when time doens't matter at all, then I tend to say that you can do a "cleaner" and more save landing with the Hip than with the Huey.

Just wondering about the decision in the end And before you reply "fly again and find out yourself"...I'll for sure refly the whole campaign, but AFTER the release of DCS 2.5.
-
Thank you for your replies. I'll keep on practice and I'll also have a look at the trk file :-)

So here's my attempt - rpm was sometimes too high. IMO it's a bit more difficult in the Mi-8 because the generator will fail if rpm goes below 80%. This is especially crucial right at the moment of power loss. Furthermore, I did not keep an eye on the speed which may have been bad. I most probably focused too much on the rpm gauge. Anyway, here's my first successful attempt: I probably failed 5-6 times before, mainly because I didn't make it to the airport and dropped into the water. IMO It's more interesting during night because the generator failure will also turn off the light in the cockpit. So you also notice when power is back again.

I'm not aware of this specific mission, but yes - in general if it's about sling load, then 1.5.6 seems the better choice. You'll have less problems. I therefore actually have more DCS installed (1.5.6 for helicopters, 1.5.7 for online and 2.1 for Nevada/Normandy).

Thank you both, I'll give it a try :-)

I was trying to learn autorotation for the Mi-8 but I did not find a good video that explained how to do it. There were some good ones for the Huey who told what instruments to check and all that. However, for the Mi-8...no idea. So I don't know how to handle the collective and all that. What I noticed is that the Mi-8 start to swing forward and backward when the engine fails and it seems very difficult to get it under control. Maybe somebody can give me the needed hints to start practicing it?

You can still edit the pilot log file if those 100% are of importance to you. Also make sure you use trimming (in case you didn't) with a spring stick.

It's interesting that some people had problems with this mission. In fact it felt like one of the easier one and I managed with my first run. The atmosphere of the mission is great. Also strange that you didn't see any fire? I think there even was a short flare from the fishermen, but this one was hard to see. There's one thing I noticed when flying along the forest:

Spring Tension Mission 4 - Missing Trigger?
rge75 replied to Martyn's topic in Missions and Campaigns
I can't even remember that :-o Or let's put it this way - when I started the campaign, this was pretty common because I didn't know how to fly her correctly, so I probably didn't notice that it was by design this time. Personally I'm also more an offline person, but I found some groups where I fly in MP every now and then. It can be very interesting to work together with other people. And I fully agree on the fixed wings. I mostly gave up on them (but I might be interested into the F-14). -
Spring Tension Mission 4 - Missing Trigger?
rge75 replied to Martyn's topic in Missions and Campaigns
I hardly remember the mission. Is this the one where you need to do a long flight to bring the Hip for a maintenance job? Well, when I run out of fuel, I simply decide the others have to wait... If you also have the oilfield campaign, you also have some missions with low fuel. It once happened to me that the fuel ran out when I was taxiing to my landing spot....for whatever reason that made the Hip tilting to the left (I suppose it was like immediately decreasing the collective?) and I wasn't able to recover. Guess how "fun" this was when I had to replay the mission because I crashed 100m before the "trigger zone". Well, sorry for going off-topic, but it just fit to the fuel story. Enjoy the rest of the campaign. Overall, it was pretty good IMO. There were a few missions with some frustration level, but not many. -
Interesting info about the fuel tank. I always wondered why I was able to start the Hip once I forgot to turn on the fuel pump. I of course noticed the mistake when I turned on the voice warning ;-) It now seems to make sense ;-)

Spring Tension Mission 4 - Missing Trigger?
rge75 replied to Martyn's topic in Missions and Campaigns
That's interesting. I finished the campaign a while ago and I can't even remember that warning. It will be interesting to see how all those missions/campaign will work in 2.5. So maybe they'll anyway need to have a look at it. Overall I'm glad I did not encounter an oil leak though ;-) -
Good point. However, it's also not realistic that I'm flying an Mi-8 at all ;-)
-
Too bad...I liked the 4350 kg ;-) Just don't fly faster than 150 km/h and don't make fast movements.
-
I'm confused, should there now be 3000kg oiltanks or 4350kg pipes? I just played the mission (but I reverted my DCS to 1.5.6) and there were pipes: It was possible to do it with no problem though (just don't fly too fast, otherwise the rope may tear). Also, it's simply needed to take your time. What I missed was something like a "mission accomplished" in the end. It only said that I can turn off the engine. So I did this and I still waited for a confirmation of the success of the mission. It's just helpful to be sure that you finished the mission.
-
Good to know. Now they only need to fix sling load and I can finally move up to 1.5.7 again.
-
How do you mean? Looks like an interesting failure though. Anyway, I just decided to upload my landing attempts on a train with Huey and Hip: Note: those are ATTEMPTS ;-)
-
Thanks for the info. Too bad it's not working atm. ...it for sure has to be fixed with the relese of the F-14 ;-) Or with the Su-33 as you said.
-
No problem, you're welcome. I'd say there are quite some pilots here who have those skills to crash on their own. Serious question though - is it possible to land on a moving train? I tried it yesterday with the Mi-8 but the wheel stand seems too wide. Thus, I tried the Huey. I managed several times to land "properly" IMO but it seems like the Huey doesn't "move along with the running train". So the following waggon will crash into the chopper. However, I'm not 100% sure - maybe I simply didn't land "good" enough or there are other problems. From what I heard, a helicopter in DCS can also fall of a moving ship though. So with that said, I think it's not possible to land on a moving train with 1.5.6. I once managed to "stay" on the waggon though when the Huey wasn't placed "well" on the waggon. So one skid was on the waggon and one was in the air which means the body of the helicopter was on the waggon. If interested, I could post a video or a screenshot.

Don't blame me if you crash ;-) Just make sure you watch the upper VSI once you're in hover. It shall be more repsonsive than the one below.
-
IMO you can have until 3 m/sec, not just 1-2. More than 3 m/sec is playing with the fire though.
-
The comparison with the truck fits ;-) The Huey is more a muscle car (or maybe a Ford Mustang) and the Gazelle probably a hypercar with too many hp and too few downforce.... About recovering VRS... that works a lot better with the new controls. However, it also worked with my old controls (have a look at 19:15 if you didn't see it yet - I once already posted it on another subforum here though): It's simply of importance that you have enough altitude to get out of VRS. Anyway, it's for sure a good example how to NOT land the Hip. Off-topic: I'll check out the Black Shark Den about flying times, so maybe I'll send you a pm. Actually I'm flying Tuesday evening CET and I have good pings there because the server is also in Switzerland (or Germany). Can't wait to start a thread "Landing the Mi-24" ;-)
-
Thanks. 10 days ago I switched to the Pro Flight Trainer Puma. It took me 2 days to get used to it. However, now I wouldn't like to switch back to my previous Hotas controls. ATM, I simply prefer the Hip over the Huey. Hopefully the Hind will feel similiar. Even though I also own the Gazelle, I did not yet try it out with the new controls. Well, might be a good idea for the next video, haha. Edit: Just had a look at your controls. Very cool!

...as promised. IMO the Huey is simply a lot more nervous than the Mi-8 and it's more difficult to have a "clean" hover As you may notice in the video, I'm moving forward/backward during the final descent because my inputs weren't smooth enough. This won't happen in the Hip IMO because she's more sluggish. Personally, I think it's more save to land the Hip for that reason (except that you need to care a lot more to avoid the vortex), but with the Huey, you can simply land and start quicker. At least it feels so.
