Looks like I also have to fly the Hip in the Normandy once. I flew the Huey there a couple of times but I never noticed that you can land inside the church. Or maybe I'll do it with the Huey to have a comparison again ;-)
-
Looks like I'll have to try it at Normandy in that case :joystick:. I agree, the missing ground effect didn't make it easier with the oil platform.

Well, I thought it would be possible to press the trim button, move the stick to center and release the trim button (that's how I understood the messages above). But pressing the trim button simply doesn't seem to do anything in my case. Anyway, I won't bother with it anymore.
-
After flying the Mi-8 for quite a while, I decided to give the Huey a try again with one of my favourite missions of Bay of Hogs ;-) So I simply had to make a video (for those who did not play the campaign so far, be aware that it's of course a spoiler). Hopefully this campaign will make it over to the new Caucasus map 2.5 once it's available. ...and hopefully Manny will also once make it to Vietnam after that ;-)
-
Ah, now I understand the system. Thank you both for the explanation. I'm not yet sure if I'll use the trim function in that case. In some cases it might be useful if you can "re-center" the cyclic to have a better "feeling"/cyclic position again.
-
Hmm, I still dont' get it. What shall it do when I press the trim button on my non-FF controller (using the Pro Flight Trainer Puma which means no centering spring but friction)? The function seems pointless for non-centering spring/non FF controller? It made sense with a normal joystick and curvature to fly from center position again.
-
I'm not sure if this is the right forum because the question doesn't just belong to the Huey (also Mi-8 or any other aircraft). In the special register of the settings, you can chose the option "joystick with no centering spring/no FF", so the setup I actually have. But what's the purpose of trimming with such a controller - or what does trimming in fact even do? Is it just the option to "disable" trimming? I mean, when I turn my stick right, it will stay right. And when I press trim, it of course won't do anything at all. So I'm simply not using trim at all with that config.

[DCS: Mi-8MTV2] More Visible Fan Blades
rge75 replied to Devrim's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Thanks a lot for your additional work. They look indeed funny. I'm not yet sure which one I prefer. Like SkateZilla said, seing the blades probably really is more of a Camera Shutter Speed Effect. Actually I simply have both in JSGME, so I can switch and decide later with which ones I'll stay. -
Guess why I reverted to 1.5.6.....

If I remember right, there was some kind of such a mission in the "Crazy Horse" campaign (which can be found under the user files section of digitalcombatsimulator.com). Here's the direct link: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/683464/ You had to do sling load to bring water to a burning nuclear power platn...that's at least how I have it in mind. I'm not sure which mission it was...maybe 4th or 5th? But don't ask me if it's still working with DCS 1.5.7...especially since sling load and performance habe some problems. Edit: According to the comments, there are quite some problems with the current DCS version though.
-
Yeah, we simply have a complete different background. I'm simply "just" a gamer with no avionik background at all.
-
The other thing is...how can you know what is realistic or what not (or what you would do in real life) when you're not a real pilot? I can just "guess". From the behaviour of the Hip (compared to the Huey), I definitively tend to fly the Hip more carefully. However, you can still thread her a bit less gently if needed. Also, from my testing on the platform, I had to noticed that it's not easy to do such a manoever.
-
Not sure how accurate/realistic DCS because I never flew a real helicopter. In my attempts, I hardly ever went into a vortex. Personally I prefer to fly her gently, but IMO it's possible to push her more like e.g. a Huey. Also generator failure hardly occured (maybe once when I raises the collective too much). It may also be of importance to not make a too sharp turn? Most difficult part was to keep her straight when quickly raising the collective ans going into hover. It needed quite some right pedal use. Either way, during missions I'll land gently again. But if you need to land in a hot LZ, then such a 360 degree manover can be very helpful IMO.
-
That's the nice thing with a sim though...you can try out stuff you wouldn't do in reality.
-
Well, also had to try it out. IMO it's quite hard to find out how sharp to do the turn to end up in a hover close to the LZ. But here's my attempt: Was this more or less what you meant?

Could be interesting to see a video of that ;-)

After finishing this very, very looong mission (took me almost those mentioned 2.5h), I noticed a slight bug in the end. When it's said to contact the base with the communications menu/F10, then that text isn't translated into english (see screenshot). It says Perotov na RP Majkon-Sanckraja or something like this (I'm not that good with the russian letters) However, some notes/feedback on the mission
-
Yeah, I made the same experience except for the curves. With negative axis curves, I had quite some problem to do sling loads (I'm still not perfect on that with the Puma). But aside that, landing is great with this setup. Like you said, it takes a while to get used to it. Biggest issue I often have is that I often pull the stick too far back by thinking it's in the middle now - which it isn't. So I lose too much speed in too short time.
-
I reverted to 1.5.6. The mission is now playable. But I'm actually having troubles with the new controls...I think sling load was easier with the old controller and trimming instead of the Pro Flight Trainer Puma controls where you don't trim because the stick doesn't go to center automatically. I hope I'll get better at it again with some practice. It's like re-learning the sim. So while I was able to do sling loads with "no problems" with the Mi-8MTV2, I now ended up with two damaged cargo and one crashed Hip....

Review of the Oilfield Campaign and Interview of the Developer
rge75 replied to Simicro's topic in Oilfield Campaign
The solder simply were walking around (toward the helo or somehwere else). No matter if Huey or Mi-8. I remember it in the Huey campaign "Bay of Hogs" because sometimes the solders ran into the chopper and demolished it.... There was no "boarding animation" though. -
1.5.7 Performance issue Oilfield Campaign Sling Load Mission 8
rge75 replied to rge75's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Just tried it with the latest 1.5.6 release. There's also a (short) slight impact when you hook the cargo, but it for sure remains playable because the fps get back to normal after a second or two. So it's definitively a 1.5.7 problem. -
[UH-1H] French Touch (Civilian mission for NTTR)
rge75 replied to Eight Ball's topic in User Created Missions General
Just saw that thread (don't know why I didn't notice it when you released the mission). Well, not the first nice mission from you... ;-) It would be nice if there would be a collection of all your missions in a zip. Or uploading them to the user file section of digigalcombatsimulator.com? It would be a bit easier to find all of your missions that way. -
Let's face it...sling load is simply f***ed up in several ways since 1.5.7...:-/ It will be even worse in mission 8 when the altitude meter goes crazy (I reported that in the DCS 1.5 bugs and problems section).
