  1. Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Just got it up and running... wow, this is incredibly fast. It's chewing up everything I throw at it, so no I'm not the least bit disappointed. :D An SSD will be next for sure.
  2. Looks like it's ambient occlusion baked into the texture. Not that this is a thread for complaints, but the AO was probably done that way to look best on the rail. Not often you get a close look at a missile in flight.
  3. Excellent response, thank you! I'm feeling vindicated now. :D Good tip on the RAM, I'll take a look around for some more. SSD is definitely my next upgrade though. I do already have the 1000 watt PSU so unless you were suggesting lower wattage for the sake of my utilities bill, I'll just stick with it. Reliable piece of hardware... It's been going strong since 08. I do have an 850w sitting around, might use that instead.
  4. Tech gurus of ED forums... I need some advice. I just purchased an i7 4770k, but as I wait for it to arrive I'm wondering if it was an inefficient choice. I am primarily looking for blazing fast performance in DCS and good performance in media applications. In terms of media applications, I have only really seen problems with gigantic Photoshop files (~200mb, hundreds of layers) with my previous processor: an AMD Phenom x4 965. I do occasionally render videos, but my primary media uses are in 3ds Max and Photoshop. I've heard that the i5 4760k performs just as well in gaming applications, but I'm not entirely sure how the two compare in DCS World. I imagine the i7 has little or no advantage in this relatively old engine. Are there any signs that the i7's primary advantage, its 8 threads, may be useful for gaming purposes in the future? I'm now realizing that the price difference between the i7 and i5 is enough to pick up a small SSD, something I don't yet have. Will have: i7 4770k on an ASUS Z87-A board 8GB DDR3 1600 (9-9-9-24) (I've read that 2400 is preferable for Haswell) GIGABYTE GTX760 4GB (I've read that a 760 or 780 would work better with the i7) 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1000w Antec TruePower Quattro (Haswell-safe, apparently) Can I at least be consoled by happy i7 users? :D
  5. As far as I've gathered, big throttle changes, particularly a hard chop to idle or the last few %N2 before afterburner produce a bit of smoke on most modern US fighters. Something to do with the engine's reaction stabilizing, perhaps.
  6. Same problem... frame rate counter appears to be in the normal range for my setup, but the hitching and stuttering is atrocious. Completely unplayable. I wouldn't expect many bug reports if people can't even play it smoothly, ED... :(
  7. Think in terms of "texture weight." With properly compressed DDS textures, a "primary" model might be around 200mb, but a less important model would be more like 100. ED's MiG-31 is a great example of a high-detail model that's very efficient with texture use.
  8. I believe he's using the photoshop preset. :D
  9. Hey, if it works, it works!
  10. That ain't a photo, my friend. ;)
  11. The VFAT Unlimited Air Race is starting now! http://www.virtual-aerobatics.com/live-shows/ This may be the coolest use of Eagle Dynamics' P-51 yet!!
  12. Don't forget you can find the schedule here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aj-5PTSoVZU2dGQ1NGxzM1hSOV9VaG4ycDB2TDNYUnc&usp=drive_web#gid=0 It is updated as necessary. Virtual Blue Impulse were moved to 1745 GMT for example.
  13. Great first day yesterday! Today is going to be packed with great shows, including some of the larger display teams. Can't wait!
  14. Yes, assuming all goes well! Sometimes the studio fails to save the stream, but that's not terribly common.
  15. For anyone still currently waiting for the Hornet fly-in, we'll be flying in about 10 minutes. Our cameraman is late.
  16. Hate to let you down, but this is not FSX, and it's very unlikely that you'll find someone who wants to spend their hobby time on that undertaking. If you search, however, you might find a flyable mod that will involve a poor flight model and no cockpit.
  17. Who's ready for VFAT? 3 days of unique, inspiring flight simulation! I know what I'm doing this weekend. You can watch the F/A-18C Hornet fly-in tomorrow at 0030 GMT for a sneak peak of one of the two External Flight Model aircraft that will be flying this weekend. (7:30 EST, 4:30 PST for those of us in the US.) See you at the show!
  18. Sounds correct. Again, I'm not completely certain of ED's methods, but that is the general idea. Regardless, the model has nothing to do with it.
  19. The way you're using the terms "table," "force vectors," and "pulling from a database" shows a misunderstanding of how flight modeling generally works. Like the SFM, ED's AFM almost certainly uses tabulated data to represent the aerodynamic characteristics of different parts of the airplane. The difference between the SFM and a more detailed flight model is the number of point forces applied to the model. ED's SFM, for example, produces only one lift vector for a whole wing. Their AFM breaks the wing up into parts in order to model a range of forces across the span. This gives a more dynamic response to various disturbances, and if you apply that concept to the entire flight model you will have an idea of how it works. However, something still has to determine the strength and direction of the force applied at each point. Aerodynamic equations need coefficient data, and to my knowledge ED also draws this data from tables. Data + equations = performance There ARE other ways to do flight modeling, like Navier-Stokes equations, but the amount of calculation required to make that possible in real-time would require computers of the future. That's more the territory of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for engineering. Here's what I'm getting at: http://secretofflight.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/volvocar.jpg With regard to the "blade-element" nonsense that X-Plane brags about, this guy has it right:
  20. Somewhere in there, the EDM format was further optimized. Might be related.
  21. I have a hard time believing the Phoenix should be quite so capable against a small, maneuvering target, but I don't know enough to back it up.
  22. Trial and error if you don't know where to start! I don't have time to mess with it right now
  23. Config\View\Server.lua. Find ViewSettings["P-51D"]. Adjust the line labeled "limits_6DOF ="
  24. No sweat! I never expect more, always glad to get a response though. Glad to know more weather features are on the radar. (Pun intended!)
  25. Wags, can we get any information on the changes to the clouds and weather? I know RRG mentioned something along those lines has changed, other than the adjustments to the cumulus effect/shader.
