Upgrade my iMac?
blackbelter replied to Ein Name wie kein Name's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This is a top notch computer that you have there. Why do you want to upgrade it anyway? Are you having problems with it? What kind of FPS are you getting in DCS? -
A bit curious... Will try it out. Thx Ed. But I am still looking forward to Dcs: fast movers.

What a disgusting story... Thanks for sharing it with me.

The fact is that I couldn't run the game with Freetrack installed. I don't have Freetrack running in the background. I simply have it on my HDD. Once I uninstall Freetrack, I was able to run Dirt 3 with no problem. No system restart was necessary. I am obviously not the only one experiencing this, as I learnt the method from someone before me. Do you remember seeing a petition on the webpage of Freetrack? If not, this might remind you of it. Do you now think that Natural Point, as a monopoly in this business, has some sort of power? If you don't have something meaningful to say, I have no problem with you not posting at all.

What made you think so?

I installed Dirt 3 on my computer, but couldn't launch it. All I got was a black screen and nothing more. If I launch task manager, I will get an error message saying that a problem has caused the .exe file to stop working. I was on the edge of being driven crazy by this problem, when I found its cause. Apparently the reason was Freetrack that I had installed on my system. Codemaster is in collaboration with Natural Point. So they made their Dirt 3 stop running on computers with Freetrack installed. What a strategy! Now in my eyes, Natural Point is plain shameless and repulsive. I now regret buying their products. Having this sort of company in the simulation business might bring something shiny in the short term, but is definitely harmful in the long run. I say: boycott Natural Point! Shame on you, Natural Point! All the more shame falls on you if you ever go out of business. What makes this even more stupid is the fact that Codemaster did this without telling people. People who weren't patient enough to find the cause will blame no other but Codemaster themselves. How stupid. And for those who were, no bad feeling about Freetrack: only that Natural Point and Codemaster look repulsive and shameful now.

In fact I have a similar question. Which way should I orient the cpu heat sink fans? The heat sink itself is designed as if it should be up-down, so that its rectangular shape goes along the shape of the cpu socket well. But this way the fans suck in air from the narrow space between the fan itself and the graphics card. It might help cooling the graphics card a little, but I don't think it is good for the cpu. On the other hand, if I orient the heat sink front-back, the fan suck in air from the middle of the case, which is fed by the front in-take case fan, which is good. But I always have a hard time aligning the heat sink with the cpu socket. Any advice? Thanks.

If I were you, I would cross ssd off the list, and get a better graphics card. SSD is nice to have, but not essential in any sense. It shortens the boot up/load time, but that's about all that it can do. If you value the little bit shortening of the boot up/load time more than fps, go get the ssd by all means. I myself value fps more than anything else. If I were on a tight budget, ssd would be the last thing that comes to my mind.

PCAviator agreed to ship me a replacement. Great!
-
I sure hope that. Just emailed them.

Just got my trackclip pro. Was broken out of the box. Got it from pcaviator. Wondering if I could get refund for that. In fact I prefer partial refunding without me shipping it back, as I am in Singapore. It is quite costly just to ship it back.

Bad news. I have been looking forward to this release, since the previous version 310.10 has problems with my 680 when 3d vision is enabled... -
Help with overclocking...
blackbelter replied to blackbelter's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks a lot people for all the information! @mmaruda: The ambient temperature is like ~30 degree centigrade. I hate air-conditioning... But I can assure you that the air circulation in my case is good. I have 5 case fans, 2 intake (one of them is really strong, and noisy...), 3 exhaust (again one of them is strong...). I have tried my best to do cable management. @MadTommy: I will check TweakTown out. Thanks! @Humvee28: My cooler didn't come with thermal paste pre-applied. Thanks for the idea... @The rest of you: I changed a few fans for the better, reapplied the thermal paste (I might have applied too little before. I learnt from some online tutorial that I should apply as little as possible.). I also used a few other software too display the temperature. It turned out to depend on which software I am using. According to realtemp, the highest temperature is 90, HWMonitor 84, and Asus AI suit II below 70. Not sure which one of them is the most accurate... -
Help with overclocking...
blackbelter replied to blackbelter's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks! The weird thing is that I cannot oc well not because of temperature, but because of voltage. I cannot go any further in reducing vcore, coz if I do, the system becomes very unstable when running 3dmark benches. The high temperature is just a biproduct of the high voltage that had to be applied. -

Never mind anything now. I am loving the speed of this monster right now!! Will be getting a second cpu fan for the cpu cooler. Right now I am using a cpu fan and a case fan on the cooler, which probably raises temperature a little bit. -

Or do you guys have a secret way of letting 3DMark run, while keeping vcore low? Which setting should I change in the bios? Thanks. -

Final OC results: 4.4GHz peaking @ 1.248V. Under IBT, temperature peaks at 90 degree centigrade on the hottest core. A little bit too much voltage/temperature maybe. But this is the lowest vcore at which WEI, 3DMark Vantage and 11 run without crashing. Because IBT and Prime95 have been stable under much lower voltage, I didn't bother to run them extensively. For normal usage (3D gaming), temperature peaks at 70 degree centigrade. Ambient temperature is ~ 28 degree. What do you guys think? Comment, please... -

Thanks people for all the help! I found a guide specific to my motherboard. I am following it strictly, hoping to gain either a stable oced system, or at least some insight into how oc works.
