Which graphics board optimal for 1920 x 1080?
Headwarp replied to LotusDragon's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You got the power management option set to "Prefer maximum performance" in nvidia control panel for dcs.exe? I was getting drops to 30 fps in VR flying around dubai, until I realized I forgot to setup a dcs profile in nv control panel and change the power management setting after a fresh install of video drivers. Not saying I'm certain this is the case for you, but worth double checking. -
It'll get better when we get whichever radar mode lets you check on screen. and hopefully somebody testing in ED can replicate the issue and determine whether it needs to be fixed. Personally, I don't fly the Hornet in MP yet, as I've run into this in both single player and MP. I stick to the Mirage or fc3 aircraft for CAP because I don't want to be one of the 8 guys yelling "raygun" every 5 seconds. Don't particularly enjoy having to say "Buddy" every 5 seconds either, given I'm flying on a server with folks on comms. I'm not all that upset about it as we're still in Early access. Personally I could care less about having to enter codes though. I just want IFF that doesn't change it's mind like ours does, and I'd fly the bug in MP as often as possible. For now it's too much of a liability in my hands without a hotshot GCI or awacs, and even then I'm constantly second guessing whether what I've got locked is friendly or not. It just takes too much guess work vs su-27, f-15c, mirage 2000C, mig-29s, su-33, hopefully soon the f-14. All of which are still fun to fly, and rightly present on the most populated MP servers. It is at a disadvantage in BVR imo due to this. Even WVR, cuz I'm like using WMR. (pun?)

Significant performance drop after last update
Headwarp replied to ExGreyFox's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Most of the time an express installation will work fine. But there are times when even selecting "clean install" nvidia leaves some files or registry keys behind that cause issues. DDU's goal is to remove anything and everything nvidia from your harddrives and registry, should you experience a conflict from a corrupted installation which may have been caused by nvidia's driver package or even windows. -
I'm using an odyssey and the only time I'm getting the steam VR load screening while flying is when I have clouds on, but that also causes a stutter on my monitor. Open the mission you're trying to fly in the mission editor and select a clear skies preset and see if it changes anything for you. The reprojection settings in steam have no effect on WMR headsets. It has it's own settings file in steam/steamapps/common/MixedRealityVRDriver/resources/settings/ The file found within can be opened with notepad, and you can enable WMR's new motion reprojection by deleting the "//" before this line "motionReprojectionMode" : "auto", Personally - having it on auto works best for me when I can't maintain 80-90 fps. But I don't think this is your issue at all. I don't know what missions you're flying but I suspect you're running into the same issue I was that goes away completely when I'm flying on maps with clear skies. Try it and let me know if I'm wrong. *Edit just realized i posted about this in another thread of yours on the same subject.

There's an Ipad app that does this but IME it was kind of laggy, as if running at low fps. This was on an old first gen Ipad though I believe. Some people use helios to export to USB monitors which can be touchscreen, or they buy Thrustmaster Cougar MFCD and sticky tac them to the usb monitors. (i have a set) - which work well on their own if you don't need the visuals to be exported, and just want more buttons to push. Didn't need the screens personally as I fly in VR. Having the buttons to push is nice, but it's hard to break the habit of reaching for the mouse, as it's used to control pretty much every other switch in the cockpit. Which leads to thoughts of building button/switch boxes.. which, myself after years of buying stuff purely for the hobby of flight simming I think I'm good.

I do own wwii modules for DCS, but expect it's the same as some other sim in my arsenal, and I am too busy turning my head around not wanting to get shot down to notice honestly. My last flight in the p-51 in DCS was about the same. If I'm looking, I can see it, if I'm focused on SA or dogfighting it's not even a thought in my mind.

SteamVR interleaved reprojection and asynchronus reprojection have zero effect on WMR headsets. Just the vive and vive pro. instead, WMR for Steam app has it's own VR settings file for WMR's latest motion reprojection which is ime way much more enjoyable than without it. You have to delete two // by the auto setting, which if it can't maintain 80-90fps it will turn on automatically and you can even turn the indicator on to tell you WHY it's turning on, cpu or gpu or settings too high to even maintain 45. Right now the only thing causing stutter and steamVR loading screens for me on my odyssey and system in single player are clouds. Without them everything's smooth. MP has a hitch here and there but the servers I fly on also use clear skies and it's mostly smooth for the majority of the time on them. Hoping the dedicated server client helps with that. If that's not the case for you run the dcs repair tool imo.

I've spent up to 8-10 hours in day on a 12.6ft inflatable pontoon boat powered by a trolling motor without a hint of motion sickness.. albeit a little wobbly and weird feeling once back on land after sitting on wake all day. Thankfully I'm not prone to motion sickness. So yeah.. I guess if someone's prone to motion sickness they should probably take it easy, and most definitely run with ASW or whatever the latest thing is for 45 fps gameplay to limit the hurl factor when 90 fps isn't achievable. That being said - I can feel it in my stomach every time I touch down in the Huey, and when I come to a stop after landing a taildragger my body lurches forward as if I suddenly slammed the brakes in my car.. or an aircraft I reckon but the latter I have no real world experience with.

It's an awesome experience. Don't be scared ;)

Significant performance drop after last update
Headwarp replied to ExGreyFox's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Double check that in NV control panel you have a dcs profile, and the only setting you're looking to change there is "Power Management" - "Prefer maximum performance". Use the dcs repair shortcut in the start menu or find your dcs install directory /bin/dcs_updater.exe repair in command prompt as admin. Then maybe try what was suggested above if that doesn't sort you out. -
you'll probably end up running supersampling, and limiting yourself to 45fps with ASW or whatever occulus uses for motion reprojection. Sometimes I get 90 fps in DCS but usually far away from any cities lol, and it's just for a moment. I'm fine with it though. WMR Motion Reprojection is doing a fine job, and being able to turn up the pixel density and run 2x msaa is lovely.
-
IMO Just leave it on you get used to it. Though admittedly I mostly fly Jets and helos in DCS. At least in my case everything in flight simming just seems much smoother with it on auto. *edit* oh wait.. you have a vive listed in your sig. ;) Not sure how steamVR's new motion reprojection is compared to WMR, but ime ever since they added the function to WMR it's been a bit of a blessing. Still with some weirdness, but still I only really notice it when I'm looking for it. In the heat of battle in MP I'm too busy trying to find an enemy or stay alive to really notice, and for the most part things look good. I'd still fly with it on in DCS WWII if I spent much time flying it.
-
Steam/steamapps/common/mixedrealityvrdriver/resources/settings/ edit the file in there with notepad and delete the two // before "MotionReprojectionMode" : "auto" It introduces some anomalies but for me causes smooth gameplay as long as I can maintain at least 45 fps, which I'm able to do with nice eye candy on my gpu. IME better on than off. Without editing that file and enabling the "new" motion reprojection feature the world outside can look like a slideshow due to not being able to maintain 90 fps, or at least above 80. The ""motionReprojectionIndicatorEnabled" : true, is kind of cool too. Puts a box in the top left of the left eye that's green when 90 fps, dark blue if on because GPU limitation, light blue if on because CPU limitation, and red if fps is below 45 and therefore off. Other than that - are you flying in maps with cloud cover? Try flying in clear skies and see how things run. I get stuttering from clouds. True even when I last tried pancake mode. P.S. I'm a little jelly of your Odyssey+

Question for RTX2080 and RTX2080ti owners.

Noodles for dinner.. but a beast of a rig for fun? -
The main appeal of 8th gen and 9th gen cpu's for gaming is their ability to overclock, if not having the fastest out of the box CPU clockspeeds we've seen to date. But again we'll be seeing the highest gains in dx12 and vulkan. I don't mention title names here due to forum rules but there's even one company using AVX operations in their coding, which would max out even 8c/16T. As vulkan and dx12 become the norm, more cores should = more performance. There are already titles out there maxing out quadcores to the point that the only upgrade route is more cores, or a cpu with hyperthreading. But we all know how that works.. by the time developers start using dx12 commonly we'll be ready for the next version of windows :P So there's no disagreement, that in a dx11 title like DCS, going from a 7600K to a new intel CPU won't see much in the ways of gain especially if the 7600K is overclocked significantly. But Vulkan will likely show a much bigger gap between a 7600K and say an 8700k. I'm not saying a 7600k wont provide acceptable performance for some peoples' needs. That remains to be seen regarding Vulkan implementation into DCS. Just stating what I've experienced in titles that use dx12 or vulkan.. where all 12 threads of my CPU seem to get equal usage spread among physical and logical cores. Reading the forums for some of these titles are kind of amusing, where "YOUR GAME IS MELTING MY CPU", indicating insufficient cooling when something actually puts 100% load on their cpu, titles that only push my CPU to 50%. None of this information changes that my answer to the OP is that he's fine sticking with his 7600K for the purpose of DCS for now. Could be worth revisiting the idea whenever ED tells us vulkan is ready, depending on what kind of CPU load we see from it. There's also no one size fits all answer for hardware in the long run with different resolutions and display types. Preferences which may change for any given pilot over time.
-
For DCS alone - for the time being - an i5 quadcore is fine, although the higher the clock frequency the better depending on gpu load. Pretty much any dx9, dx10, or dx 11 title is going to be mostly about the performance of a single core. When DCS starts using vulkan, it may be another story all together. But there's no telling when that's coming. DX12 and vulkan titles put load on all 12 threads of my 8700k.

In game and nvidia graphic settings help thanks
Headwarp replied to TonyStovepipe's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Nobody was accusing you of showing off. :) Just asking for more information. Sorry if I was a bit of a smart ***. Is it safe to assume you're using helios to export MFD's to another screen or screens? In NV Control panel, the major thing you want is in your dcs.exe profile under "Power management" to be set to "Prefer maximum performance". The only other settings that might effect anything in NV Control panel: you can use FXAA in place of in-game anti-aliasing options. if MSAA or SSAA causes too much of a performance loss. You can also play around with the texture filtering options, and setting "Texture filtering - Quality" to High Quality disables all texture filtering options. There are descriptions for each of these settings at the bottom of nvcontrol panel. Also when looking at CPU performance, look at individual core performance. One core running at 99% is 25% total usage on a quadcore. Your screen shows 43% total CPU usage. Given the single threaded nature of DX11 that could indicate a CPU bottleneck, which would explain why your gpu isn't maxed, given that you have the correct power management setting for dcs.exe in nv control panel. If CPU bottlenecked, resolution increases could put more load on the GPU and offer better quality to performance ratio, although using helios I'm unsure how well that would work. But you can use the in-game SSAA setting to test higher resolutions. If your ingame res was 1920x1080, I'd say you could probably get away with at least 1.5 SSAA. With helios causing 3840x1080, SSAA might be way too many pixels. You can try using DSR in NV Control Panel instead of SSAA for resolution increases, but be prepared for a bit of a pita as you have to configure DCS run at whatever resolution DSR would be. Native res - 3840x1080 + DSR 1.25 = (3840*1.25)x(1080*1.25), and you might have to guess where to actually click with the mouse in DCS until you get it set to the correct resolution. -

Display type and resolution matter. I don't list my specs in my sig to be a showoff ;) -
I just used the hornet instant action over Caucasus ACM 8v8. By default it's heavy cloud cover. You can run it as downloaded with the hornet module for a mission with clouds if you own the hornet in the instant action menu. For me the misison is found in - D:\games\DCS World Openbeta\Mods\aircraft\FA-18C\Missions\Quickstart\Caucasus FA-18C BVR 8v8.miz Once opened in the ME there's an icon on the left that looks like a cloud and the sun. Click it and on the right weather settings appear. At the bottom, there will be a drop down box where you can select "Summer - Clean skies, no wind." And to the right of that will be a series of icons one of which will generate the preset weather condition for clean weather once clicked. You can then save this as another filename or in another folder. I'll upload my modified mission file for clean weather to make it easier, and also so you can keep the default instant action mission cloudy for comparison. Just rename mine or keep it in a separate folder from the original. Unfortunately, I didn't think to make a backup of the original mission before editing it, but I guess I could redownload the hornet for the default version if needed and you or others could remove the player hornets and insert aircraft of your choosing. Hope ED doesn't mind the usage of the instant action mission for these purposes. Caucasus FA-18C BVR 8v8.miz And don't feel bad I'm mostly clueless when it comes to the mission editor myself. Forgive me if I'm assuming incorrectly that you have access to the Hornet. The default version with clouds causes a stutter even on my monitor with no trackIR. Clean skies smooth as butter even in VR. This is with a minimum framerate in the 80's on my 21:9. Send your flight in to attack bandits and use the mountains for cover imo to survive long enough to form a conclusion. lol. Should shooting your enemies down not be a simple task I guess. It's good missile evasion practice none the less.

Worst game performance after last OB update?
Headwarp replied to DeathAngel1's topic in Game Performance Bugs
click start menu, scroll to and click "Eagle Dynamics", click "Repair DCS World". If for some reason you don't have it in your start menu, type CMD in cortana (if using win10) right click command prompt and run as administrator navigate to your DCS installation directory, change drives by typing C: or D: depending on where you installed, use CD open folders in cmd prompt until you are at DCS World/bin/ and then type "dcs_updater.exe repair" and hit enter. If you didn't specify an installation directory when installing, by default it's somewhere within C:\Program files\ or c:\program files (x86) you can use the command "DIR" to explore the contents of whatever directory you're navigating in command prompt for help with folder names, considering your installation directories differ from mine. -
That depends on how long it's going to take them to implement Vulkan imo. We'd all like Vulkan sooner than later. If it were coming between now and a couple months and solves whater's causing the stutter from clouds, sure, focus on that. But looking at the track record of how long API conversions tend to take in the simming world, if it's going to take 3-6 months months or even years, I think it's worth hunting down whatever makes clouds cause a stutter in 2.5 Using steamVR stutters are more than just a momentary pause of the game. You get loading screens and are taking out of the experience.. Even on my monitor it's not pleasant for the game to pause out of nowhere. Like I said. I'm cool with flying in clear skies til something can be done about this, whether it be vulkan, or a bug hunt with clouds. You got how many posts of people trying to eliminate stutters in these forums? Lol. I'd like those people to start chiming in on how their rigs perform with and without clouds. Also there's the question of whether this is a bug with clouds, or a limitation of dx11. Vulkan isn't a guaranteed fix.. clouds in general also have a pretty huge place in flight sims. Anyway, none of us can or will decide anything for ED. I think a more useful response to anything in these posts might be whether you are seeing similar results with clouds on or off. For me - this has been driving me nutty for a few months now. Enough to discourage me from flying when I get the urge. Honestly pretty thankful this thread came up, as it's saved me more headaches @ troubleshooting... could've taken even more months before I ever thought to try clear skies in the ME.

Civ traffic has been known to be a bit of a resource hog, at least back in 1.5 it would wreck havoc on otherwise smooth gameplay. For me personally, it's just a habit to leave it off at this point for both performance, and because seeing heavy civ traffic in the middle of a warzone doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The effects of which might be more noticeable on other maps, NTTR is generally the best performing map. Thing to keep in mind here is that David's running 2560x1440, and if I'm not mistaken he's also running SSAA 1.5 which brings him up to a 4k resolution. (2560*1.5)*(1440*1.5)= 3840x2160 There's almost a million pixels difference between 2560x1440 and 2560x1080. With SSAA 1.5 on his screen there's 4.6 million more pixels than 2560x1440. for a total of 8,294,400.. If you were to use his exact settings outside of SSAA and weren't limited at the CPU, the expectation would be higher FPS. IMO don't mix DSR and the in-game SSAA, and as far as I know the Anti-Aliasing Transparency supersampling settings have no effect in DCS. You could use DSR in place of SSAA for a resolution bump, SSAA setting in-game is just less complicated for pretty much the same result. SSAA 1.5 + in game + 2.0 supersampling if it worked from NV contorl panel would be a resolution of 6960x3240 which equals about 22.5million pixels and surely could bring even a 2080Ti to it's knees. 4k = 8,294,400 pixels for reference there. 2560x1080= 2,764,800. When you start counting pixels, at least for me it is a little easier to understand the effects of resolution on performance. My best guess is still CPU bottleneck with your monitor's native res. SSAA 1.5 would = 3840x1620 resolution with your monitor which imo SHOULD get the GPU doing the brunt of the work, and still keep you comparable in performance with David OC. I think you'd probably see similar fps on the ground even, only with better picture quality. Cards like the 1080Ti or equivilant/more powerful are intended for high resolution gameplay. My 2080Ti is right on the edge of being too powerful for my 3440x1440 monitor in DCS and SOME DX11 titles. But pretty much right at the sweet spot.
-
Post a screenshot of your in-game settings? Also make sure dcs.exe has a profile in NV control panel and that "Power management" for dcs.exe in nv control panel is set to "Prefer maximum performance" Maybe try SSAA 1.5 instead of msaa.. or ssaa 1.5 + msaa 2x, or just msaa 2x Make sure Civ traffic is off as well. The resolution increase from supersampling might put more load on the GPU as you could well be CPU bottlenecked at 2560x1080. 8700K's @ 5.0ghz have been running into cpu limitations some dx11 titles using a 1080Ti or faster up to 2560x1440. Supersampling might not actually give an increased framerate, but it's worth checking how she runs with more load on the GPU. MSAA hits the framerates hard in 2.5. It is a fact that the closer to the ground you are the more time you will spend at your minimum framerates but, I would think you could achieve higher than 45 on the ground. But if it's a cpu limitation you're kind of stuck with it at your resolution with a non K processor, unless you find better performance using SSAA. Kind of a coin toss. With DX11 titles that largely depend on single threaded performance, if any one core on your cpu is reaching 99% usage during gameplay your GPU will likely be held back. The lower the resolution and the more powerful the gpu the more likely you are to run into CPU limitations, at which point increases in CPU clock frequency will become the only way to get performance gains. Increases in resolution can put the card to work, which could result in higher performance/image quality ratio, but that isn't guaranteed. I personally run without shadows, but not for performance reasons. Your post isn't really helping this guy with his question, and your experiences might not always equal other peoples experiences, especially looking at the differences in hardware between you and him. Personally, ime I got equal or better performance to what he's reporting with a 980Ti on a 3440x1440 monitor, and the guy deserves to get the most out of his rig.
-
That setting simply caps the maximum framerate, which some have reported helps with smooth gameplay while using trackIR. Maintaining 60 fps is still a matter of tweaking settings for performance. 2080Ti will still drop into the 50's @ 4k with max settings and flying close to the ground. Which a 1440p monitor with 1.5ssaa = 4k res pretty much.

Just chiming in to say after the latest update to openbeta I'm still running smooth as butter without clouds at least in the Hornet Instant action ACM 8v8 mission, as well as still running into occasional stutters with clouds on. I'm not saying I expected fixes in this patch or anything, just stating this seems to be the only thing giving me performance issues whatsoever when it comes to a single player instant action mission. I can live with flying in clear skies for the time being to have a smooth experience and won't attempt to speculate on Eagle Dynamic's priorities regarding development of the sim, just think this is something that likely deserves attention. I'm starting to wonder just how many complaints of stutters on these forums might be related to weather settings in the mission editor, more specifically clouds. I think a solution to this would go a long way. If DCS always ran on my rig like it does with clouds off I'd be a pretty happy camper. Really my only complaints with the sim at the moment aside from the general weirdness when first joining a MP server with lots of aircraft in the role selection list, and clouds causing stuttering. Other than that.. lots of good things coming to us in the future.
