  1. You can use an m2 pcie x4 drive in 2.1 slot without anything being disabled as long as you run it in pci-e mode. There are both SATA III and PCI-E m2 drives.
  2. Decided not to go with my long winded response to this....but to state I've been using different phrases regarding hard faults and page faults because of the fact that yes, page faults refer to "hard faults" and "soft faults" which using the resource monitor you can see when a program is causing hard faults. The only real reason anybody's still talking page faults in this thread is because of you :P I simply explored one avenue of DCS performance and noted that virtual and physical memory usage remains about the same between 16 and 32GB on the one mission I was regularly testing. I have no idea why you keep trying to school me in what a page fault, hard fault, or soft fault is.
  3. Whatever the case.. DCS causes extremely large swap files in windows, where unused ram is present. It's pretty unique just due to the nature of the beast that is DCS and its ability to hog resources. There's not another title in my library that calls for swap files this large. Not to mention by the time I've loaded an MP server 17million page faults have occured and that number grows about 20k-150k per poll from task manager until DCS is closed. That's quite a bit of drive access happening. Many reads and writes. I don't see other programs with hard faults in the ranges that I'm seeing with DCS either, much less the total amount and rate of page faults. I'll probably see the benefits of the additional ram in large MP servers but, my observation is simply that more ram didn't amount to less page file usage in DCS. And a shortage of ram was apparently not my issue. I still get a brief SteamVR loading screen for no apparent reason at least, in certain missions while in flight. Could even be module specific. More to do there. I'll probably take that discussion to the VR issues forum, now that there's no hardware left to buy to rule out pc specs.
  4. Yeah ram is running at 3200mhz. Did some stress testing. The ram works fine. As far as "DCS" having nothing to do with it according to the poster above.. the development of the memory management module and experiences like fragbums says DCS has something to do with how it handles memory. And again.. the only real surprise to me was that when running dcs, my system is using more page file than ram even after the upgrade, despite having more than enough ram to cover the swap file + physical ram usage being used at the time of looking . It's simply an observation not a request for lessons in personal computing. That's not directed at Fragbum, regardless of his post being quoted. Still.. I do find myself curious as to what DCS might be storing in page files as opposed to loading it onto ram and how that could effect the program.
  5. Got my new ram.. aside from struggling to seat it underneath my aio hoses and what not 2nd kit works like a charm. HOwever - I'm not really seeing any difference in DCS performance. It's like DCS wants to use more pagefile than it does ram. I lowered my P.D to 1.3 on the odyssey and it seems to have aleviated my dropped frame issue, not that it makes sense to me considering i'm not maxing out my VRAM and otherwise maintain 45fps. What I do notice is going from map to cockpit seems to happen faster. I'm sure I'll appreciate the extra ram flying DDCS or Blueflag or something tho. Might disable the page file for a bit to see what happens there but I kind of wish DCS would just use the ram rather than the page file without having to attempt to force it.
  6. I would reinstall aura personally it shouldn't be using that much CPU. I do know at one point when Aura was using higher than normal CPU for me, not 100% on any core but as soon as I set my own color and lighting options it went back to using almost no resources at all. I would also check to see if maybe it's conflicting with any other RGB software if you have any shineys besides Asus stuff.
  7. Might depend on the headset. Samsung Odyssey I had to run 1.0 PD and low textures on my 980Ti to get 45fps, which is comparable to the 1070 in performance. Rift at native resolution probably a little less demanding.
  8. yeah man im sure the volair would be a better situation.
  9. I drilled holes in the steel plate for pedal mounts in my Obutto to mount my crosswinds. Was stupidly simple to do, and thin enough that there was no worry about damaging any drill bits or even using oil or water. Literally took less than a minute and I used a spring loaded auto-punch to get the leverage. The corded drill and bits maybe cost $30 total so you don't need anything fancy. Eye protection to be safe.
  10. I have an Obutto R3volution and I love it. The volair isn't far off from the design. Pros- Takes less space than the desk that took half of two walls and a corner in the room I'm currently in. Seat is more comfortable on my back than the computer seat it replaced. Pedals are hardmounted to the floorplate, so no concerns about them sliding around or tipping. My stick is centermounted and I love it. Throttle hardmounted w/ nuts and bolts, have a g-13 mounted next to it (doesn't look like the volair has as many mounting solutions but I'd imagine you could rig some things up if you needed it) Comfortable - I couldn't go back to simming at a desk. You start to appreciate the pedal placement and seat arrangment in a vehicle for their ergonomics. Cons - a little harder to climb out of than a computer chair mine is riddled in usb cables, my solution was velcro'ing powered usb 2.0 hubs and zipties Price. Shipping for my Obutto was an additional $200 >.< Unsure how that pans out with volair No Swivel chair - I really have to crank my entire body to check six in VR. Conclusion - I love my pit, obutto's keyboard/mouse tray looks a little bigger on the Obutto but I'm a little jealous of the optional arm rests to be honest. That being said - the ease of hardmounting makes everything simming more comfortable to me.. and prior to it i was using a piece of plywood with some ikea tables I"d cut up for a side stick config and my pedals were too close and the stick/throttle "Mount" wobbled. lol. I could've done a lot better over time but getting a pit configured for the task was a definite step up. And I enjoy it just as much for any other task involving my PC. With the extra space I could move all of my music/recording gear in this room as well where I had a separate room for it before. If you're dedicated to the simming hobby or spend a lot of time at your PC personally I doubt you'd regret getting yourself a pit like volair or similar. - I used double sided sticky pads for the sidewinder on the obutto mounting plate. Also bought the optional WH mounting plates which allowed for nuts and bolts. Oh..and that's my OLD PC with a highly neglected case.
  11. 3200 mhz cas latency 16 ram might be more practical pricewise. DDR4 4000mhz cas 18 or cas 19 is almost double the price and when it comes to CAS Latency lower is better. Even CAS 14 3200mhz ram is significantly less expensive. That is also not to mention that official DRAM speed supported by 8th and 9th gen intel cpu's is 2666mhz. So faster ram profiles are technically overclocking. And there may be a point at which extreme ram speeds don't play well with extreme CPU frequencies. Chances are at least when it comes to gaming and DCS that the price of that 4000mhz at least imo isn't justified, and the benefit might be almost unnoticeable. 3200mhz ram on the other hand.. currently seeing some pretty good sales on newegg. Might not help you in London >.<
  12. It was scanned 3 hours away.. so I might get it tomorrow. But it's scheduled for the 20th :P FargBum.
  13. Yeah turn on XMP to get your money's worth out of that ram. ;) If it started throwing errors with xmp on I'd RMA it if it's still under warranty. I mean.. will you see noticable gains in DCS? I wouldn't really imagine so but.. the ram is designed to run using the intel xmp profile. It will be faster than without it, and that applies to your entire system not just one application. I wouldn't replace your existing ram simply for ram that runs at a higher mhz, that usually comes with a higher cas latency as well and the effect won't be much. VR in DCS may however benefit from having a higher total capacity of ram. It was DCS 1.5 after all that made me upgrade from 8 to 16GB on my old rig when 8gb was considered overkill for everything gaming. I'm waiting on another 16GB kit to arrive..hopefully by the 20th which will put me up to 32GB. I am probably going to try and give an in-depth account of my experiences in PC upgrades since jumping into DCS 2.X as there's really almost nothing I can throw money at in regards to PC performance once the kit is installed.. so if you can hang on to your money til then I'd feel better offering advice, but if money's burning a hole in your pocket I'd likely advise a 32GB kit over a higher mhz 16GB kit. If xmp causes your OC to become unstable I'd first try a bump in cpu vcore anywhere between .05 to .15 before fiddling with much else. At least that did the trick when i went from 8 to 16GB on my last rig. :) If that didn't work that'd be about the only reason I'd consider running less than the xmp rated speeds. Knock on wood I haven't run into an experience where xmp wouldn't work, other than this one board/ram combo years ago that thankfully, with the help of others with the same issue I was able to set the timings manually. QVL lists <3
  14. Are you manually trying to up the frequency? or are you setting the XMP profile? If possible...just use the XMP profile. It should set appropriate voltage and timings your ram is rated for. If for some reason you have no way to set the xmp profile which is unlikely, you could try to match the timings and voltage to the xmp profile manually. That information should be clearly listed either on the package or the manufacturer's product page. For example - to run my ram at rated 3200mhz the XMP profile sets cas latency 16 which = timing of 16-18-18-38 2T and a dram voltage of 1.35. I've not used a motherboard in the last decade that doesn't allow you to enable DRAM xmp profiles in some simple way, but just in case - be aware the timings and/or voltage will likely be very different than what I'm using. But - that's all relevant to it's advertised speeds and information you should know. So don't use my rams timings and voltage as an example for anything other than format of what information you're looking for specific to yours.
  15. Franky the only thing I would use target for is if you want to fly old sims with outdated controller support imo. In DCS you can just use the "modifier" function in game to get multiple functions out of every button on the stick or throttle. Just my 2 cents..might save you some headache. Also might help to ensure the TM Warthog firmware is the latest version.
  16. I appreciate you sharing the experience. Of course I won't know for certain until I plug the sticks in but I'm feeling a bit more confident that the increase in total ram is going to show a different behavior than what I'm seeing now.
  17. If you're in the U.S. Newegg has a 30 day return policy on ram kits. If you can find the exact model of ram you're using it's worth a shot imo. Just ordered another 16GB myself.
  18. I'm only using the windows resource monitor and arranging from most memory used to put DCS at the top. Just on the desktop or running less hungry games my hard fault graph looks more like Frag's. Adding page faults to task manager "Detailed" list doesn't differentiate between hard and soft faults but DCS gets up to about 15million total page faults just loading the game and then continues to grow rapidly. And then with VR i have enough room on my screen to watch the resource monitor when i lift my headset up.. 30-40 hardfaults/s, and then the 600/s at which point I checked ram prices again and haven't logged back in. If the additional ram doesn't cure my woes at least I can say that currently outside of a 9th gen processor my rig has pretty much no room for throwing money at it looking for improvements in DCS >.< $134 wasn't a bad deal for 16 gb of 3200mhz ram with shiney RGB.
  19. I did read thank you. Still I don't know what resolution you're running at. If 1080P 60hz it's completely understandable why your 2080Ti is hardly doing any work. We're talking about video cards. Resolution and refresh rate are always relevant. :P Based on the fact that it's performing worse than the 1070, sure it's likely some software conflict. But without being able to put my hands on your PC it isn't possible to try and help if you can't answer questions. And with that good luck. Just based on what you're willing to offer.. which included half or your relevent PC specs.. the first things I would do are reinstall directx, dcs repair, delete the fxo and metashader2 folders in users/xxxx/saved games/dcs/ and repair the 2013 vc redist. Check and make sure my profile for DCS in NV Control panel was actually pointed at DCS.exe in the installation folder/bin directory, ensure "Prefer maximum performance." DDU from safe mode. Any of the advice already given and that you've already tried. If you have fast internet and not too many files you care about holding onto, of course a fresh windows install, followed by fresh installations of system, peripheral, and video card drivers would rule out most software issues.
  20. The guy already replaced his 680 >.< But looking at your screenshots. Seeing the lack of hard faults I'm now curious what that would look like with a system managed page file. Flying the Instant Action for the Hornet over Caucasus - 8v8 ACM, I watched my hard faults climb 600/s while in flight. So seeing the kit of ram I currently have installed drop to $134 on sale, I ordered another kit last night. You have almost no hardfaults at all on your rig, which with page file disabled makes sense. I am curious what that screenshot would look like with your page file running system managed while flying dcs. But.. as long as I don't run into any issues installing the second kit I'll be able to mostly answer that myself by monday/teusday hopefully. FYI - I'm trying to eliminate an issue with steam vr loading screen popping up while in flight, which that hornet instant action mission likes to induce. I'm hoping it's a lack of ram causing the dropped frames. I'm feeling pretty good about it honestly, given the way my system is hard faulting when running DCS. I'll know sometime after the weekend. I swear Newegg knows exactly how to get me to spend money sometimes.
  21. Nobody's breaking 45fps in VR right now. 1080Ti or higher just means you can do so with higher settings.
  22. C:\users\xxxx\dcsopenbeta\config (or different if you aren't using openbeta) Move your input folder somewhere you can find then delete the config folder. Run DCS, you'll have to set all your settings again including sound and video settings. Close dcs, drag your input folder back into the newly made config folder. Start dcs.. .back in action.
  23. It's good that you listed some of your PC specs.. but display type and resolution are almost more relevant than your cpu speeds depending on pixel count and which gpu you're using. A screenshot of your ingame graphics settings or letting us know if you're using any ssaa or not would help as well. Probably a good idea to state what wattage your PSU is rated for. Otherwise you're asking us to shoot in the dark. Knowing you have a 2080Ti doesn't say much if we don't know what you're trying to power with it. Advice for anybody posting in regards to performance in any given situation would be to offer this much information at the least - Processor model/speed Gpu make and model Ram amount/speed In-game settings Display type (monitor, multi-monitor, VR) Display resolution and refresh rate. With that info it'd be easier to assess whether there is a setting somewhere that will help. Other than that step one is run the dcs repair tool from the windows start menu and ensure the dcs profile you might have to manually add in NV control panel is set to "Prefer maximum performance" for power management as has been suggested. I'm pretty sure "dcs_updater.exe repair" might ensure the vc redistributable packages are in working order but, also in the install directory for DCS, there are VC redistributable packages that you can run repair on and potentially rule out issues with that. So that would be my next step after running the repair. If that doesn't help then my guess would be some kind of software conflict somewhere. I know i ran into a weird issue at one point in DCS where I was capped at 64 fps for some reason until I enabled the Geforce Experience Overlay, another member fixed the same issue deleting the max fps line in the graphics lua files. Others i've read said it had something to do with windows game mode which i've always had disabled. And oddly it's something I've only run into once but can no longer replicate, and unlikely your issue as you're stating 40fps. But there's probably a fix for this somewhere.
  24. When talking about gpu performance it's helpful to know what resolution you plan to run at..or if in VR. 980Ti and 1070 can still rock 1080P like a baws.
