It's very dependent on display resolution. like I said @ 3440x1440 in DCS World I'm right on the edge of a bottlneck, meaning my gpu usage doesn't drop below 97%. If i were to use the same settings @ 2560x1440 i'd most certainly feel the effects of cpu limitations in dx11 titles.. and 1080P was so 900 series. In VR it seems about like the same story. Using the Odyssey and WMR's motion reprojeciton indicator, both the light blue and dark blue squares appear, light blue indicating a cpu limitation, and dark blue indicating a gpu limitation. Even WMR software seems to be confused on where my bottleneck for DCS World is. ;P That being said I'm usually at 45fps with motion reprojection on and neither my cpu or gpu get full usage due to the frame limit. anything above 5ghz is on the extreme end of things for the time being, and that's not going to change between a 9600k and a 9900k imo, as 8th and 9th gen i5's are capable of decent overclocks. That's just for now as it stands because DCS World is still using dx11 though. Vulkan and dx12 changes things, and we know vulkan implementation for DCS World is coming at some point in the future we just don't know when, and that SHOULD mean better over all usage of your CPU and gpu. You can see this demonstrated in various comparisons between the cards on youtube that use both dx11 and dx12 titles for benchmarks. Buy the best you can afford, it will be the least limiting, and the longest lasting option in the long run. If the 2080Ti is just going to have too big an impact on your finances but the 2080 isn't.. you have your answer. Don't drive yourself crazy shopping for hardware. And you never know when you might fancy a 4k monitor as your main display and stumble upon another pc gaming title you might enjoy. Who knows when and what can change while ED works on VR optimization and vulkan. If you got the dough for the best of the best you rule out most concerns for at least a couple generations of hardware. If you don't.. you'll probably still be very happy with the second best. Right now, even with the best hardware money can buy you're probably going to be at 45 FPS in VR with motion reprojection on for the time being.. faster hardware might allow for higher pixel density values + msaa 2x and a clearer image. 90FPS in all scenarios of DCS World VR, especially where it matters over cities and terrain and all the combat units around is currently unachievable to my knowledge. We can continue giving you our opinions.. but it really boils down to your circumstances and your needs. This decision is on you :) For my circumstances, monitor resolution, and VR, and not basing my choice on one specific title, I love my rig, including my stupidly expensive 2080Ti. It's overkill for my 100hz refresh rate @3440x1440 in a lot of cases.. and fits just right in others. I buy overkill and end up with a rig that lasts me for 3-6 years.

Sounds like the grief my 2500k would give me at times before I upgraded. I attributed it to the lack of driver updates for my EVGA mobo in that rig since 2013. With quite a bit of searching and investigating the individual components of the mobo i found some success with drivers directly from intel for the sata controller, as well as network drivers that were somewhat problematic. It's.. "Fun" installing drivers meant for 8.1 in windows 10. I can't say I miss those moments with my old 2nd gen rig. Unsure if that's the case with you. But my ssd's from that old rig are still working like a charm in this build.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103274&ignorebbr=1 - my 2500k ran @ 4.5ghz on something very similar to this, i think I had a 212 hyper evo or something, although i was pushing it close with temps.. 85C average during stress testing (100% CPU usage). I eventually backed it down to 4.3ghz. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200113&ignorebbr=1 decent solution is like $15-$25 usd + tax/shipping. Worth the peace of mind imo. I wouldn't judge you if you ate cheap noodles for a few days to accommodate the pricetag if money's that tight. Leaving the pc turned off until you can get one makes even more sense if that's the the case. I wouldn't risk it, as the cost of the cpu/mobo are way higher. I've also tended to avoid stock intel coolers like the plague. They just can't compete. I did verify your cpu's TjMax is 100*C but even so iff you can't keep it at 85C average or below at 100% cpu the situation becomes a bit urgent as far as pc hardware goes imo. DCS isn't putting your cpu at full load but the temps your hitting running software that will (like video rendering) is your system saying "I'm not healthy." A stable system could run stress testing software like prime95 indefinitely without throttling. I'll leave it there and wish you good luck!.
-
Lol. I'm sorry nobody's asked you what your temps are to help you figure it out sooner. Maybe something in the conversation got you looking at things enough to find it though. Personally I've been there. Neglected heatsink gets dirty as crap.. cpu starts throttling... replacing a dirty heatsink is what lead me to my first cpu overclock on my 2500k and it did pretty well for an air cooler. if you have room for a 240mm radiator in your case and can afford it an AIO unit. The cpu is probably not damaged, more like 120-130 degrees or something to literally melt the cpu but I wouldn't run it anymore until you address your cooling situation. Hopefully the PC shut down when you hit 100C right? Or at least throttled down to where you were below TJMax? That sounds a little high for TJmax. Best case scenario you, replace the heatsink and you're good, maybe clean the thing e'r now and then. Most copper heatsinks + fan should be better than any stock intel cooler, but if you got the dough and room in your case for a decent AIO you'd probably be impressed with it. Good luck.

What monitor/resolution should I be looking at?
Headwarp replied to CL30's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This ^^ Lower resolutions make it easier to spot the blurs in the distance, but there's still a bit of training the eyeball for what you're looking for. Black specs at higher resolutions in the air can be hard to see, but they're there. You can also see afterburners glowing at a distance.. they stand out especially at night, but are generally visible in the day as well. Spotting contrails always helps. Hoping some day ED makes it so they aren't attached to view distance or whatever it is that causes them to disappear from time to time. -
I was asking you to look at your CPU usage per program on an idle desktop to rule out corrupted background software installs. dcs.exe was showing 24% cpu usage in your resource monitor while your PC was showing higher than that in the CPU graph. On an idle desktop, with processes tab arranged by cpu usage in taskmanger, anything using more than 1-2% cpu would indicate some kind of faulty background software installation or a driver struggling with something. Fauly network driver might increase cpu usage when downloading, or that could even be a sata controller driver, which could do the same when transferring from one drive to another, etc etc. Hunting down best working drivers was a bit tricky with my 2500k rig, as the manufacturer hadn't released any new drivers since 2013, and some of them had issues with later versions of win10. I can't say for sure if 4th gen intel mobo's are still receiving bios and driver updates, but they are becoming dated. Thing made me learn how to use poolmon >.< Drivers aside, Anti-virus software doesn't even need to be malfunctioning to get a little greedy from time to time, including windows defender which I personally have permanently disabled. I do a factory reset once or twice a year to be malware free, or if I'm just stumped on problematic behavior. Even on the 8th gen rig in my signature, because asus driver packages come in zip files I have run into corrupted driver/software package installs because I forgot to first "Unblock" the zip file before extracting. Some nifty new win10 childproofing feature. I'm not saying that this is your problem.. just what comes to mind when looking at your resource monitor based on my own experiences. I also wasn't recommending afterburner to OC anything, just for the on-screen display to monitor your CPU/GPU usage in the game window, which the CPU can be broken down per core. It's extremely helpful in looking for bottlenecks imo if everything else is running right, and the hardware query polling rate can be set to update every 1ms, rather than its default of 1000ms, providing a more accurate representation of what your cpu is doing. Still have to have the headset off to watch it however. Aside from that it's nice for being able to set a custom gpu fan curve to ensure the gpu isn't throttling. 10 series and newer gpu's will downclock slightly when you exceed certain temps afaik. I'm just wondering what's causing your cpu graph in that screen shot to be at near the halfway mark if dcs.exe was showing only 24% of that usage, and if there's no issues there, I'm still curious if you're running into a wall @ 4.3ghz, or if perhaps 1.2PD in a rift is simply too high to maintain that 45fps minimum with a 1080. :) If that were the case I'd imagine you'd see 99% gpu usage all the time though, so I'm still leaning towards something to do with the cpu, whether it's simply a bottleneck or something within your operating system hogging cpu cycles where it shouldn't be. What does your gpu usage look like now that you've gotten this far? certain cloud density settings seem to cause me stutters where other weather settings don't.. I'm sure it's on the to-do list at ED, but they're working on a lot of goodies currently. So imo - test performance in clear skies, low to the ground, around the biggest clusters of buildings you can find. I like Dubai on the Persian Gulf map. Thanks for giving me an idea of where you're at, experience wise. And glad you've found some improvement.

So just reading through these posts again. And there are honestly quite a few things to check and require a bit more specification on your part. Is this happening in one specific aircraft? If so which. Have you tried running DCS without the mod you have installed and are you getting the same results? If you haven't tried the latest version without the mod I would do a cleanup, followed by a repair and see how the game runs vanilla. You can do this through command prompt, by navigating to your install directory/bin/ and typing "dcs_updater.exe cleanup" without the quotes, followed by "dcs_updater.exe repair" If you're going to use mods, I would also suggest you download, install, and learn how to use JSGME or OvGME. You don't want to download updates from Eagle Dynamics while you have mods installed. This software copies the original game data when you enable a mod, and then replaces it when you disable said mod. At which point you can start the update for the latest version. And even then, the mod developer likely needs to update his work for it to be compatible with new versions of the game in many cases. You also say, you "Tried drivers." Does this mean you went to your motherboard, laptop, or pre-built computer manufacterer's support website and verified you have the latest or best working version of each available driver for your system? As well as having forced windows update to check for the latest updates to the operating system? As far as the nvidia driver, did you install 417.71 using the "express" method? This caused issues with my rig. Remedy - download latest drivers, then find the latest version of DDU from guru3d, boot to safemode to run DDU, then install the drivers you downloaded from nvidia. Reconfigure your NV control panel settings.. The screen grab below shows the most important one imo for a dcs profile. Also it's hard to guage much by your pictures of your task manager and resource monitor. On an idle desktop, do any of your background processes use more than 1-2% of your cpu with processes sorted by cpu usage in task manager? Shouldn't be. May I recommend MSI afterburner for monitoring your resource usage while actually running DCS? It won't tell you what's using what, but it will tell you how much of what's being used including temperatures and you can break it down to a per core level. You can also change the polling rate so that it updates the information you see faster, although doing so can use a bit of cpu itself. I would mention ASW, but if you're only getting 30 fps you're not there yet.

VR is amazing and I'm surprisingly large/tall in VR

You guys aren't neglecting the seat adjustment switch in the A-10C are you? :P The pilot on the other hand.. I feel like he has small feet.. at least when I'm in the chute. -
What headset are you using? Also take a look at your individual cpu core usage.. see if any of them are hitting 99%

I don't fly it in MP yet, but once as she gets closer to being feature complete I see myself spending a lot of time in the Bug, and will likely spend a lot of time in the F-16CJ when we get it. The bug just has all the delivery methods you can want, The viper will carry less, but also will have all the delivery methods you can want. But this question is impossible, the Tomcat and the JF-17 are going to get some love from this virtual flyboy too. But once we get the data link in the Hornet it's probably where I'm going to be spending most of my time when I have the vr headset on, at least until we get the F-16CJ

Fair point.. <--still waiting on extra cash to buy the Tomcat.

the 980Ti I upgraded from was a Black Edition. Thing didn't like being overclocked even +10Mhz, but other than that the GPU did it's job and offered 980Ti performance. 1545 mhz is the stock speed of the non founders edition 2080Ti from nvidia. I will say @4.9ghz on my 8700k, I'm right on the edge of a CPU bottleneck with my 2080Ti in both VR and my 3440x1440 monitor in DCS, but in VR that's less important as for the time being, I'm limited to 45 fps with motion reprojection on anyway. 2080Ti is the fastest GPU on the market right now and likely to last longer before you consider your next upgrade. If people aren't going to starve because of your decision to buy one, I don't see the harm in it ;) But you might want a 4k monitor to go with it. =x or 3440x1440 seems to be juuuuust right, maybe perfect if i were to achieve a 5.2+GHz overclock of my cpu.

Question about older CPU...
Headwarp replied to Mr_Burns's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The implementation of the vulkan API is something we're all highly anticipating and looking forward to. It's unfortunate that we don't know if it will be this year..next year or even 5 years down the road. But I would say for DCS specifically that the i7 9600k is the best bang for the buck for now Vulkan may very well change our feelings on whether or not an i7 is worth it for DCS. Let's also keep in mind fps being a "nonsense figure" is a matter of opinion. I started gaming back in the days where all we had were CRT monitors, which allowed for raising and lowering your refresh rate without the need for something like "g-sync" or "freesync". In certain first person shooters altering the frame rate above a certain point caused the physics of the game to behave differently. "Box jumping" Not to mention that higher frame rates coincide with less input lag, and therefore a sensation of being more responsive. In DCS World, I can look at the trees at 60hz on my monitor and see a clear difference in that and say 75-85Hz/fps. You really have to look to notice it, but the only comparison I can offer is almost a slide show vs fluid motion closer to what I'd see driving a car and looking at the trees. That might not bother some.. and people who don't know any better may never notice it. But once you see it. You can't unsee it. It's more a matter of what you're willing to live with, and how much it hurts your wallet to deal with it. :) 60hz monitors have been the standard for so long that most pc gamers are used to it. But some of us really love our high refresh rate monitors over 60hz anyday. Even if it's not quite as important in a flight sim vs a twitchy action packed shooter. And then there are VR headsets, which at least the odyssey has to run at either 45fps, with frames being reprojected or 85-90fps, not lower or inbetween. Or it's a choppy mess and you're probably going to feel a little bit woozy. -
Question about older CPU...
Headwarp replied to Mr_Burns's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
WHen you're talking about 1080Ti or better (2080, 2080Ti) you could well run into a CPU bottleneck at resolutions less than 4k with that 2600k. When I talk about my CPU upgrade i should state I was on a 980Ti and a 3440x1440 resolution monitor. Now I'm on an 8700k with a 2080Ti just barely CPU bottlenecked in DCS in both VR and on the monitor. Like 99% here and there on one cpu core and gpu usage dropping from 99% to 97%. I'm not saying I think you're interested in a 2080 or 2080Ti but, I am saying there's every chance that upgrading one is going to lead you to upgrading the other >.< -
Best MOBO, SSD etc for DCS
Headwarp replied to Frogstomp's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'd check reviews at retailers checking occurrences of hardware failure and also look read up on warranty experiences, as well as the details of the warranties themselves. Biggest concern with an aio is pump failure.. but I'd think most available AIO units do a better job than air alone. Looking at the demensions of that thing @ 394mm, you better have a roomy case. But with a pump capable of 2800 rpm and a radiator that large it should be at least a few degrees cooler than a 240mm. I wouldn't go less than a 240mm rad with 8th gen or newer personally if there's any desire to overclock. -
I'd call them up. EVGA customer service is the best in the business. I think that's most likely a typo.. as afaik VR functionality is dependent on connectivity and it has all the current connections and the USB-C that no headset is using yet. It might not as perform quite as well as the other versions due to the lower boost clock, and there probably won't be much headroom for overclocking if at all with a black edition. But I don't see anything that would stop it from powering a VR headset. The difference in boost clock is only going to amount to between 5-10 fps different from stock clocks on a model with a 1650Mhz boost if even that much. The gpu's tend to boost quite a bit higher than their advertised speeds when gaming anyway. Running my XC Ultra at 1754 boost clock actually nets me like 2020-2070Mhz boost. At 1650 I'm between 1920-1950Mhz

Was just on a cold war server in the Mig-21 wondering why my frames were all over the place. Got in the F-5e and had no issues whatsoever. Seems somethings off with the Mig-21. *Edit* seems you guys are already aware. <3 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3736543&postcount=3

Question about older CPU...
Headwarp replied to Mr_Burns's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
For me the biggest bonus to upgrading from an i5 2500k to 8700k was a motherboard with on going driver/bios updates, but i upgraded my system before I upgraded to my current GPU. Having done so now I'm certainly glad I upgraded the rest of the system beforehand. I may delid this thing at some point down the road and see if I can take my OC any higher, but 4.9ghz was easy to achieve without doing so using an AIO. -

I personally haven't used AMD cards in a long time.. but I'm watching youtube comparisons of 1060 vs 580 and they're pretty close. but I think what would be more relevant of a comparison is how much better is a 1060 6gb or a 580 vs your current r9 290? For another $150 USD you could get an RTX 2060 which almost keeps up with a GTX 1080, and would make you smile a little bigger when you use it for the first time. 580 vs 1060 290 vs 1060 Mute this video for your own sanity 2060 vs 580 rtx 2060 vs gtx 1080 Personally if i were in your shoes I'd put the money in the piggy bank and wait out another $150US for a bigger performance increase. Or see if AMD does anything later in the year. By then you might have enough for a 2070. Beyond the 2070 you'll probably want a faster OC or CPU and higher resolution monitor/VR headset to justify the power from the GPU, at least until vulkan implementation. My general philosophy with GPUs is the more you spend the longer you go before asking us this question upon release of the next generation or three of GPUs

Cougar mfds in vr for the hornet(and the in the future the f16)
Headwarp replied to Rakamora's topic in Virtual Reality
Plenty of threads in these forums who've attached some kind of DIY solution to the bottom of their office chairs. Or there's this https://wheelstandpro.us/wheel-stand-pro-super-warthog-wheel-stand-for-your-thrustmaster-hotas-warthog-and-saitek-pedals-pedals-mouse-keyboard-throttles-not-included/ I honestly think that version of the wheel stand pro was made at my request, but perhaps I wasn't alone in wanting options for keyboard/mouse stick and throttle. I decided on the Obutto before they made it though, or I'd have probably snagged one. Reviews I've read say it's sturdy. I know at some point you were looking at a volair simpit, unsure if you made the jump yet, but if you do any mods to your office chair be sure to adequately reinforce it.. Having a steady center mount, even more so due to a bum shoulder is pretty awesome compared to how I was doing it before. -

I have a set of cougar mfd's that I've been neglecting rigging to my obutto.. but from the times I have used them, I feel like if I mounted them somewhat close to proportionate for what I'm seeing in VR they'd be awesome. I want an F/A-18C UFC to go between them frankly 0.o -
There's a checkbox in the VR menu in game to allow use of the mouse. Other than that the only other thing I can think of is when in cockpit if I'm not looking at a switch in a specific way it doesn't register my mouseclicks. Mostly when looking at things down and to the left or right and back far enough to make me turn my head. The cursor, at least in VR, is a round dot now but works as it always did for me. Make sure you have "Confine cursor to game window" checked as well in the VR menu, so you don't accidentally click on the desktop, which would cause all controls not to respond.
