  1. There’s no difference between the F-14 and an FBW plane in that regard, both have irreversible controls.

  4. I would love to see animated airbags, too, but I’m not sure how one would go about it. I don’t think DCS supports soft body physics of any kind.
  5. I never noticed… Is it a DCS limitation? Is the Hornet similarly handicapped?
  6. NATOPS recommends not using toe brakes for min radius turns because the inboard main gear will roll backward at full steering and braking that wheel ends up increasing radius.
  7. Don’t think I’ve seen this effect in DCS but I’ve definitely seen it on a P-51 in another sim where the flaps could jam or break when overstressed and you were never quite sure which it would be. It was a cool visual effect to see the flap literally flapping in the wind.

  9. I assumed it was because the actuators on an FBW plane are much faster and don’t mind sudden reversals. No torque tubes to break. Doesn’t the Hornet use LEFs and TEFs to augment the ailerons?
  10. Even if you mapped (emergency) sweep to an axis, the actuators will lag behind your lever movements. You’d always have to be thinking ahead of the wings, like F1 drivers dealing with turbo lag in the ‘80s. Even if there was a benefit to manual control, a human will make more mistakes than the CADC.
  11. It sounds like the stick values might be going out of bounds and starting over from 0 at some physical point in the travel (like the Y2K problem) but I’ve never heard of that happening on a stick….
  12. What’re the odds those night afterburner photos are picking up infrared? It’s pretty common for most cameras, film or digital, to pick up some amount of infrared unless filtered and that would make the flames look brighter at night.

Seems likely they’re clamps reflecting the light and shouldn’t be white.

  17. You’re right that its function is totally different from the Hornet. I assumed the purpose of the disconnect was just what it says on the tin, a way to remove the autopilot’s ability to drive the plane in the event of unexpected behavior when cruising from waypoint to waypoint. I don’t think it was ever intended to be used in BFM.
  18. Performance aside, I had heard somewhere of pilots turning bleeds off or to ram in the groove so they can hear the engines without the ECS noise, any truth to that?
  19. It’s important to note that defeating the mid-compression bypass doesn’t give you thrust, it just prevents it from being taken away under certain conditions. If you don’t fly in those conditions (mainly pushing past 15 units AoA) you wouldn’t notice the difference. And I don’t think the bleeds take that much power from the engines, certainly not compared to the boundary layer control on the MiG-21, and while you can fly with the air source off or in ram it does shut off the radar that you may need to kill things. Might also inhibit gun firing?

  21. Alright, I’m gonna stop ya right there. There’s no reason the gun would sound the same in the cockpit of each fighter equipped with it. The 14 has the gun under the pilot, the 15 has it way out there past the engine nacelle, the 16 has the gun behind you with the muzzle almost next to your face. A lot of what you’ll hear of the gun from the cockpit is vibration transmitted through the structure which, you may have guessed, is different in each aircraft. Sure, it’ll sound similar in each case, but not the same. Play a guitar in a garage. Then play that same guitar in a recording studio. Same instrument, different sound. What are you asking for, anyway? Have HB copy and paste the files from one of ED’s modules just for the sake of them sounding the same? When has HB ever copied anything from anyone else? The alternative is going out to record the gun on a real working F-14. I don’t the equipment or visas to go to Iran and do that work, do you?
  22. Yup, I don’t think anyone has strapped studio-grade mics to any fighter plane to record the gun firing inside and out.
  23. Just throwing ideas out there… Would it not be possible to do a short video maybe once a month or once a quarter as a virtual tour of things going on at HB? Might be a better format for teasing work in progress than the community update forum posts.
  24. IFLOLS also has to be adjusted per aircraft type because hook/eye distance varies. In fact, that’s caused a lot of issues with the F-14 because it wasn’t being adjusted in DCS. You’ll call the ball as “101, hornet ball” and be guided in like a hornet and catch a 1 or 2 wire because the hook is further back.
