  1. yes I would definitely consider this type of flying unorthodox
  2. If you are into helicopters the Black Shark Den is the place to go. I wouldn't really call us casual though and I won't lie all the information we throw at you is probably pretty intimidating but the culture I have seen with our pilots is truly amazing. Our pilots are very quick to help when help is needed. We strive to provide all the essential information to get new guys up and flying as quick as possible. So if you are looking for more serious group to help you improve check us out.
  3. Oh ya I forget about that sometimes irl it’s usually just left on Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. The Radar altimeter is an add on to the original Huey so they put the power switch overhead behind the circuit breakers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Been a while since anyone posted here so I will go ahead and bump this. BSD has been pretty active this last year: We have recently gotten quite a few new member from the European time zones. However we still are trying to work on a training plan that will work for our friends across the pond. Our mission builders have been out of control they are making missions you just won't see anywhere else. Add this with our dedicated servers allows our pilots to jump on whenever they want. And finally the community has been outstanding our pilots will work with new guys to get them up to speed pretty quick. They are also extremely friendly and with our discord and website the experience extends well beyond just flying in DCS. If you have any desire to fly helicopters in DCS or already do but think it has gotten boring or stale than you just haven't found the right group. We fly more realistically than some other groups out there but have amassed a plethora of training documents and manuals all in one convenient place. Coupled with our awesome instructors and progression program you will be up to speed in no time. Please stop by our discord channel and talk to some of our pilots and see if BSD if for you.
  6. You could recreate it by assigning the sound to play only on a certain frequency however the difference is the songs will be stored in the .miz instead of your game directory. You should be fine with a couple of songs but if you add too much you will probably be waiting awhile for the mission to load. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. You can add sound files in the mission editor and trigger it in a variety of ways however more sound files means a larger mission file which will take longer to load. Fun fact though Black Shark 1 had a radio station that you could tune into on the AM radio you could add music into a folder in the game files. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. It’s a lot of practice but it also helps knowing the theory behind it all. Check out this channel he does a great job of explaining everything. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG13vqdYSapylJU53JD8yEQ Also my recommendation is that you practice deliberately. Pick a point on the runway to land to and try shooting your approach to that point every time while maintaining a constant angle keeping a constant deceleration and decent in the goal being to stop all forward motion as the skids touch the ground. Start off with a gradual deceleration (that relative walking motion I talked about earlier) then speed it up. Don’t try rushing yourself it comes with time what I’m telling you isn’t the cool fast landing that you wanted but it helps establish the fundamentals so that you can eventually get to that point. I also recommend doing a traffic pattern maintaining ~500ft agl and 80 knots. This helps with building control coordination. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Well for sure you can land vertically but it definitely will not be quick. However the type of landing is dictated by the terrain and situation. It is actually very rare that you will ever make a landing as quick as the one in my video. You have to take into consideration that you will usually be in a formation which makes faster landing more challenging and dangerous. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. You don’t want to transition through ETL until you are within ground effect. If you can you want to try shooting the approach to the ground. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Ok ya I was just trying to gage your expectations honestly I haven’t seen a movie in a long time that gets helicopters right. But honestly come chat up our pilots http:// https://discord.gg/kaayJ5z Oh and as for a video I’m away from the computer this week so no DCS but I did make this video a while back just for fun Totally not realistic but was still fun Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Huey and landing! Where are those experts pilot with quick landing :) It’s all about your pitch attitude the more aggressive the nose up pitch attitude the faster you will stop however this is tricky because too aggressive and you may run out of power and droop the rotor system. Get it wrong and dump all your speed at an out of ground effect (OGE) altitude (about 75ft) and you are setting yourself up for vortex ring state (VRS). You also have to take into consideration density altitude and your gross weight both of which will affect aircraft performance and handling. The reality is the approach to a hot LZ will probably be a lot slower than you would like. It’s going to feel like a relative walking pace. Check out this video notice the speed And then check out the modern equivalent with multiple aircraft. The 60 definitely has more power but the fundamentals are the same. And if you don’t believe me here it is from a Vietnam helicopter pilot (time code 4:12) Also shameless plug for The Black Shark Den http:// https://www.blacksharkden.com If you want to become a better chopper pilot in DCS BSD will take you to the next level Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I hope this thread isn't dead but I've been taking a lot of screenshots lately that I thought the community would like.
  14. So I've been having issues with getting a red screen under NVGs. I have had the issue in both the Huey and Mi-8 so far. I am using Frenchy's/Tacca mod for NVG. Anyone else having similar issues?
  15. I could possibly be able to help as well I fly irl with a lot of former Huey pilots and the phraseology hasn’t really changed much Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Keep in mind these guys have thousands of hours in the Huey and as former combat aviators flying was the easiest part of the job. Also they kept the force trim off so they never took their hands off the controls if they would have it probably would have tried doing an Immelmann as you described. 17. You should not be using the radar altimeter for IFR because the radar altimeter drops out at 1500 feet which you should be flying above. Also all of the IFR procedures are in MSL. Also a lot of threat weapon systems have an engagement altitude greater that 1500 ft so it won’t help you there either. The radar altimeter is very useful though under NVGs when you don’t have binocular vision (ie. Depth perception). Also gagging the exact height above the ground during the day is not easy. For example we have a company policy that requires us to stay above 500 ft agl so the radar altimeter is very useful for that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Ok thank you Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. So it wasn’t the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior I’m sorry I’m just a little confused I know there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes but it would be nice to know what is going on with the 58 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Oculus has more of one so if you are on the vive it may be different Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. You look through the gap in the nose piece I use my knee board sometimes as well still not the easiest thing to do in VR but better than nothing I guess. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I know it’s just if they were trying to do a Vietnam Huey then they kind of messed up but the U.S. Army was actually flying the Huey until 2009 so they really could have put a lot more modern equipment in it if they wanted to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Well if you look at the external model of the Huey they actually modeled where the apr-39 sensors would go. So they did not use a Vietnam model. It is pretty clear that they used a late 80s/90s model. Which from the documentation I provided proves they had RWR. I get that you can’t have everything but that is a pretty big game changer and it is a shame they never added it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Also while I am at it why do we not have an RWR in the huey? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. And this is why I put it in the wish list I don’t know how it would be implemented but would be very useful nonetheless and from what I have found accurate to the time and aircraft. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
