PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
frenzon replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I couldn't wait for my PointCTRL order, so I hacked together a hand tracker + button pusher using a North Focals Loop (a 5-way Bluetooth LE controller on a ring) and a Leap Motion: It works OK (here's a video), but hand tracking isn't ever going to be as robust as tracking an LED, and it only does one hand (you can't buy more Loop controllers), so all its done is whet my appetite for the PointCTRL even more!- 3421 replies

I made these acrylic panels to fit on the Flight Ops Panel - you can use a white whiteboard marker to write your labels on, and they erase with a wet sponge. This makes it super easy to create/bind/experiment/change controls, and fast to swap different panels on and off for different planes - they just slide on over the top of the existing panel without screws. Still experimenting though :)

I second that - I bought an earlier version of the same hub in 2013, and it's still going strong

Vibration pad/chair make it easier to fly?
frenzon replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Imagine flying without sound on. That's what flying without a Jetseat feels like. -
No-one has mentioned it yet, but one of the biggest changes you can make is to install the VR Shaders Mod. It's a massive pain to install and keep updated (you have to wipe your shaders and reinstall the mod each update), but it lead to a huge performance increase for my 5K+/2080Ti/9900K - it took it from noticeably jerky to incredibly smooth at 1.5PD/72hz.

FWIW I found the Pimax comfort (and overall experience) was improved *immensely* with the Vive Deluxe Audio Strap and the 3D printed attachments to make it work.

Got mine today - hookup was easy, but in case it helps anyone else - mine didn't work until I upgraded my throttle firmware from version 19 to version 23.

Next Level Racing Motion system and DCS?
frenzon replied to lasvideo's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Wish I'd found this response before spending all night researching this! Do you have any recommendations for what we should be looking at instead if not doing the DIY g-seat thing? -
It seems like simtools doesn't currently export the g-forces, but it looks like people in the xsimulator forums have been writing their own scripts to figure it out.

The photo in this thread is a pretty good comparison if you're familiar with what the original Vive looked like.

Uff you're right. Goes to show how good subjective opinions are - I bet the difference was the PD settings I had at each setup [emoji26] Will update original post - thanks for calling out my daftness. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

Just set up my Vive Pro and did 20 minutes in the Caucasus M-2000C Guns mission; I love it The resolution jump is immediately noticeable (edit: it felt better than the Samsung WMD Odyssey, but is the same res) It doesn't handle pauses as well as the Rift (fades to a Steam waiting screen) At PD1.5 I can just read the text on the INS mode selector knob in the M-2000C At PD1.2 I can read it if I lean forward a little At PD1 I need to use the VR zoom Tracking is clearly better than the WMD Odyssey It's close enough to the Rift in terms of comfort etc The Vive lenses are not as good as the Rift's - the in-focus area is smaller Screen-door effect is a huge improvement over the original Vive (which was the worst of the bunch); feels similar to the Samsung In dogfights, it's noticeably easier to read the position/heading of the other planes Am running on a Titan Xp - at PD1.5 above the sea, everything is fine, but gets noticeably bad when looking at the ground on medium settings - am tempted to set terrain detail to absolute minimum in return for high-res cockpits and enemy planes. Agree with the YouTube video above - if you can afford it, this is the one to get.

What a thread to combine my passions - quadcopters and DCS input devices! I've been looking into using the 462 to make a better radio controller for all the reasons people love the FSSB. Based on your quick observations, does the 462 have enough stability/precision that (with appropriate attachments and thumb/fingertip controls) you could use it as a flightstick - e.g. how easy do you think it would be for a user to hold it at a specific X/Y percentage value?

Worked for me out of the box, though my IPD is pretty close to default. FWIW, after putting five more hours in today, it's clear the positional tracking is not as good - it is fine, it's just not as robust as the Rift and I find myself resetting my head position more. I might put some stuff up on my walls to give it more visual edges to anchor on and see how it goes.

I have the Rift, Vive, and Odyssey - inspired by this post I gave the Odyssey a go, and agree with the original poster - I likely won't be going back to the Rift for DCS: everything is clearer (though AA issues are more obvious even at PD 1.4) it deals less well with lower framerates - a little more juddery. headset is sweatier, though creates less VR-face since it's not pressed against my skin like the Rift head tracking seems roughly equivalent the headphones aren't as good In the M2000-C Caucasus Ground Attack instant action mission, I destroyed every target with ammo to spare on my first go - gun runs were significantly easier

Had been looking at building a modular controller so I could have something resuable for different jets, then came across this modular MIDI controller on Kickstarter. Any thoughts? Can we use/remap MIDI controls to inputs in DCS?

What is that throttle?

After so much waiting, Slaw is taking orders again. Got my RX Viper order in this morning. So excited. https://www.facebook.com/slaw.device

After reading this thread I bought one (thanks Andre!) to couple with my VR setup. I was unimpressed at first - it felt like buzzing rather than the thumps I was expecting, but after sliding a few of the gain controls up it got a little better. Then I played an Instant Action mission it with the Jetseat accidentally off and I realized how numb, lifeless, and lacking in feedback DCS feels now without it - I was blacking out in the game multiple times without the g-effects feedback to guide me. So while I wasn't an instant convert, I'm super sold on this.
