Question about the test of hydraulics pump during start up
Victory205 replied to lucky-hendrix's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
The momentary spin up on the engine is to "prime" the hydraulic system and put head pressure on an accumulator to prep the system for the subsequent checks. The emergency flight hydraulics were designed to get you feet wet so you could eject. There were a couple of disasters with crews trying to make it all the way to a landing on that system alone. A close friend had testing a fix for that as his first assignment as a test pilot at PAX. They put a system in fkr shunting normal hydraulics in order to test the backup. AFAIK, it was never put on the aircraft for whatever reason. Maybe on the F14D? I never heard. The combined system has the major components on it, gear, flaps, etc, so the left engine was thought of as the "main" engine, while the right was the "auxiliary" engine, so to speak. It explains why the left engine required more indicated airspeed for a successful air start. -
Question: how fast your Tomcat can reach?
Victory205 replied to Sonoda Umi's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
They have to provide and use valid data to "certify" the module. -
I am now your biggest student. Your new call sign is "Yoda";)

I can get the B over the top with a 180 KIAS entry at 5-10,000 feet, even with the gear and flaps down. Light buffet to 15-17 units over the top, gently. Try 450 KIAS with a 4 G and transition to 15 units over the top and back to 4 G's down the backside. Should be a very comfortable maneuver at this speeds in Mil power. Report back.

Wait....seriously!!!???!!! The HUD doesn't show airspeed????
Victory205 replied to gmelinite's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
It's tough without at least track IR and some zoom. When in doubt, spend money. ;) -

Victory205 replied to gmelinite's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
No, no! It's impossible to fly without airspeed on the HUD, just like it is impossible to drive across town without Google Maps on your iPhone! The Spitfire has airspeed on the HUD right? That's how the RAF won the Battle of Britain... ;) -
Oh well, whiplash. Has to be legit.

Who knew?

Spend some time practicing and noticing the sound and feel at different AOA. Fly various maneuvers looking over your shoulder, keeping your head out, only glancing at the AOA and ASI. Try some basic loops at Mil at different entry speeds with a 4-5 G pull to a 15 unit pull over the top. See how slow you can enter and still get it over the top. Then do it using burner. The rest is in the Handling tips. Practice finess, you can't just put your feet on the instrument panel and pull with both hands. I thought you Ready Room hero's knew out to fly? ;)

Good grief guys, look in the Sticky Section.

The fighter puke podcast boys had a lot wrong in the first twenty minutes I listened to. I wondered if they were asleep when they flew the F14, I'm not sure any of them had 1000 hours in it. I had one compressor stall the entire time I flew it. They said the F14A would stall while trying to tank? WTF? Maybe they had bad maintenance or technique. You wanted the engines at Mil or Zone 5 at high alpha, not Mil or Idle as one of the mentioned. I think their heart was with the Hornet With tanks and AA weapons, max conserve was around 225-235. Maneuvering flaps should come out at 10.5 units at medium altitude.

I called getting the handle into the spider dent "Wing Wrestling". It wasn't easy... Use Master reset to get the detend forward so you can find it.

Is the HUD pitch ladder supposed to be juddery?

[RESOLVED] Auto wing sweep not working under G's
Victory205 replied to Hummingbird's topic in Bugs and Problems
Hopefully, Heatblur will take their time to carefully research this phenomenon and engage in extensive testing to ensure that it is correct. At least six or seven months to make sure that it right. -
If my office chair had an ejection function, I'd be pulling the handle right now!

DCS: F-14 Air to Air Refueling Tutorial
Victory205 replied to 104th_Maverick's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
220-300, with 250 the sweet spot depending upon the platform. The KC135 setup in the IA missions is around 350, it's way too fast. -
Modeled perfectly (by the Heatblur Genius Team).
-
That seems very, very slow. Can you try 230 KIAS at 15,000 feet and see what your AOA shows on the AOA indicator in the cockpit (not the information bar data)?

Why are the f14 instrument clusters so poorly designed?
Victory205 replied to lancerr's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I'd like to try VR, but decided to wait for full, interactive cockpit holograms to be modeled. It's the future. ;) -
No, you control rate of descent with power. DLC on the aircraft for a single, particular scenario. Read the Case I tips, you'll save yourself a lot of agony.
-
Good grief. I've known how the system works and how to use it for 35 years. After reading that, I'm not so sure anymore. ;) ;) Fighter Pilot Logic - Dirty Push on Stick- Houses get bigger. Push on DLC thumbwheel- Houses get bigger. Pull on Stick- Houses get smaller. Pull on DLC thumbwheel- Houses get smaller. Clean Pull on Flap Handle- Flaps extend. Pull on DLC thumbwheel. Maneuvering Flaps Extend... Etc, etc, etc. Better yet, just let the maneuvering flaps work automatically. In a week, this will all be second nature. You are making more complicated than it is. Get out there and fly!

Yep, RIOS were busy on low levels, changing the waypoints. I was a TARPS guy also, and we did our LL with a strip chart that we made by hand, and flew time, distance and groundspeed. It's hilarious to see the Hornet guys complaining about reality. It's just the way it was. Progress is a good thing, and the F35 guys have it made compared to everything else out there. They think that the F18 is prehistoric. I'd have given anything for a hand held GPS. I'd have carried at least three of them! We knew that on release, that guys would be howling about "bugs" that were actually features in the "Realjet ™". ;) The Heatblur team are geniuses, and they were and are fighting to mimic the actual aircraft, including its design deficiencies.

Victory205 replied to lancerr's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I would add that in all DCS aircraft, the cockpit geometry is a little different than in real life. Not sure if it is FOV, or head location, etc, but some things are more difficult to see than in real life. Some of it may be due to our human stereoscopic vision. For example, the windscreen and HUD cameras are located properly in the sim, but in reality, when your eyes are focused at distance, those items are a blur. The compass is easily seen while sitting in the F14 seat, but I can't see it at all in DCS. Same with the ASI and engine instruments. They are clipped on my screen, but in reality, you could see and read them without difficultly. I could read the DME on the BDHI within a tenth of a degree, even though tenths are not displayed. I can barely see it in the sim. The whole geometry of the cockpit has been meticulously scanned and recreated, but there is something just a little off for some reason. What sort of FOV are you all using on your screen? I zoom in until only the windscreen, VDI and top of the engine instruments are visible. I can see ASI, ALT and BDHI, etc but have to move my head to see anything else. How does it look in VR? -
Notice he is flying in Landing Mode. Look at the update rate and the VSI and VV jumping and jittering. The E bracket movement is coarse and sluggish. The pitch rates are phenomenal. Gets the nose vertical starting with a 150 KIAS entry with the gear and flaps down. "Piece of Cake." Constantly checking fuel. Sharp crew, obviously. Notice where the HUD pitch bar and aircraft symbol are when they are on the ground.
