In reality, ACL requires that the ship lock up the aircraft on one of it's two ACL radars. That didn't happen on Case I approaches. Therefore, recommend using ILS for backup during daytime Case I ops.

Lex's short vids are good, but the information could be presented in less time if necessary. My Case I Tips are just that, they assume as stated, that you are familiar with the pattern and how to fly a basic approach. Otherwise, the LSO's wouldn't let you near the ship in the first place. It is the nuances of flying that pattern in the F14 sim. The sim carrier landing handling will be getting better over time. I am responsible currently for about ten thousand pages of flight manuals, operations manuals, Air way manuals, chart notes, policy documents, etc, etc, etc. Reading is the only way, and lots and lots and lots of notes. Sort of like Tips sheets. We have a pilot who has made up a Study Guide that seeks to address most of the basic aircraft operation knowledge. It's 176 pages long. No question that we are producing a generation of video addicts. Each has a place. Some of the guys posting videos make money off of their production. They should, it takes many hours to produce such quality work. Another reason for my deference to them.

Land based at USN bases was typically 800 AGL, sometimes higher for noise abatement mostly. USAF bases were much higher, 1500-2000, those guys were afraid of the ground... FAA/ICAO rules are turbo jets must maintain 1500 AGL until lower is required to facilitate landing.

Do you take notes when viewing/hearing? There is no way to learn the volume of information you are responsible for in aviation by video. That obviously holds true for a broad spectrum of professions.

Refueling - Jester is great, but he needs to learn when to shut up....
Victory205 replied to Cake's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
You have to work that out with your RIO in the ready room after the flight. Arguing in the aircraft is unprofessional and leads to fist fights in the catwalk later. Be nice to Jester, he may save your arse someday. -
The autopilot disengage paddle switch wasn't used in ACM. The Roll SAS only was turned off before maneuvering. Roll SAS exacerbated departure from controlled flight tendancies. Pitch SAS was left on at all times. Yaw SAS isn't affected by the paddle switch and is a gated switch that is left on at all times. The paddle switch was used to disengage the autopilot in an emergency when the damned thing wouldn't disengage for some reason.

That's as it should be. The Hornet was designed for kids and is easier to land. There is a new system being tested called "magic carpet", it's already on the F35. It uses the flaps and slats to instantly produce or remove lift in concert with stick movement. You are basically employing Direct Lift Control in response to stick input. The first F35 carrier landing evolution had zero bolters. In ten years, no one will remember how to fly... ;)

When you get close to the desired trim, fine tune by clicking on the trim button, don't hold it. Trimming is a simple skill that has been forgotten in the FBW world. Additionally, I found a quirk in my Warthog Stick. I had to set the UP, UR and UL positions to nose down, and the DN, DL and DR positions to nose up trim. The coolie hat required too precise of an input and I often would not get the trim response that I intended. This expanded the target, so to speak, and works far better. The other aspect is that trim changes as wings move, with DLC input, speed brake extension, flap extension, etc. Normal stuff.

So far you are barking up the right tree, but you also must select ILS using the two switches on the PDCP panel for HUD and VDI (the third switch set is HSD, but that doesn't affect approach path needle display). The switches tend to be set to ACL, switch both to ILS. So two buttons and two switches need to be set to get the needles in addition to selection of the correct channel on the ARA 63. Landing Mode, AWL are the buttons, and ILS selected for HUD and VDI are the switches.

I was wondering if anyone would notice that was modeled. Geniuses. ;)

I hate video. Believe it or not, I'm also running on a Mac Pro under Bootcamp, and don't have Teamspeak or any sort of Capture software. I know a lot of folks like to be spoon fed and think of themselves as visual learners and so forth, but you simply have to strap in and figure this out step by step. If all you do is rage around and expect to be proficient in two days, you will be disappointed and never progress. In the guides, there are tips for how to induce a spin and practice recovery, how to find power settings for your configuration in the Case I pattern. You have to put in the work. There was a guy that made a two hour video on the Case I pattern for the Hornet. How many times did you watch it? A paper can be referenced at any time, even while the sim is paused. Video has a place, but for overview and familiarization when a student hasn't had access to the cockpit, but it doesn't have depth. You have a simulator in your hands. It is an extremely valuable asset. Go fly it.

If you exceed the structural limit for the actual wing position in Bomb or Manual mode, the wingsweep system will revert to the AUTO schedule. The CADC is keeping you out of trouble.

Seemingly five minutes ago, everyone around here was screaming "release it NOW" no matter what is missing! Trust me, all of that is coming. They've added a ton of bindings over the past two weeks!
-
I'm also about to put up a new Spin Recovery Paper in PDF form. Share the heck out of it. We can't afford to lose any more Tomcats!
-
It's early access, everything will be bindable in due course. "Pissy" pilots belong in the USAF...

No worries at all. Point people at the valid solutions, link to the "tips" papers when it makes sense. My entire focus is reducing frustration for EA customers by sharing useful data.

Bro', I knew Hoser. He was a character who loved to mess with people. He was full of shit on some things. This is one of them, if he actually ever said it... It is safe to say that he was never in a flat spin in an F14 and no one on record that I can find ever swept the wings aft during a spin. Read the guide, it's all in there. Spread good gouge.

RIO or pilot must be in Single Target Track. MSP Prep on?

You set the autopilot mode on the left console then activate it by depressing the NWS button on the stick. You should see the autopilot light go out on the left windscreen indicator panel. You have one more button to push...
