  1. This Eagle II aircraft..... what kind of heat signature does it give off?.... just out of curiosity :D Seriously though, this is great, the more people playing DCS the better for everyone!
  2. Wow A/G radar. OK this will be fun.
  3. I bought the game recently and they gave me 3 free keys as part of a promotion. Does anyone want one or all of them? Please PM. first come, first served. Current ED forum members only.
  4. The difference is like night and day. I couldn't play dcs without it.
  5. The controls feel light if you are used to a warthog. But not flimsy by any means. You get accustomed to the lightness in a few hours and then you appreciate it because it allows for less fatiguing Sim sessions. The controls are the smoothest I've used. (have not tried vkb or vpc) but compared to a warthog it feels like a big upgrade in smoothness, and allows for precision flying, without having to put in any effort. I just wish he could find a way to bring the cost down to allow more people to experience these.
  6. Because adult entertainment in a 360 3D movie with a $20 headset is amazing on a phone screen :P
  7. IMO the quality of VR resolution is not high enough to warrant the $500-800 price tag for oculus / vive. However at $200-300 for a Windows Mixed Reality head set (Lenovo $199 atm with controllers) that is worth it just to experience it. I mean I payed more than $199 for a TrackIR unit back in the day.
  8. OMG I'm a huge Battlestar Galactica fan too!
  9. Has anyone tried playing with Windows 10 game mode on/off? Does it help with VR?
  10. Can anyone tell me if the ergonomics better in the X-56? I've read a lot of criticism about the X-55 joystick in particular.
  11. Sometimes I wonder if it is a pentagon strategy to down play the effectiveness of US equipment in order to give a false sense of security to potential enemies. That would mean potential enemies might train less, or train in a way that does not prepare them in way that represents the actual threat. Leaving them unprepared and ineffective.
  12. If you already have a cockpit, then you might consider getting a skylight dome, slicing it in half, painting it with projection paint, and then projecting from 4k projector onto it (there is some software that stretches out the image to the right size). A good projector should last you up to 10,000hrs per bulb.
  13. I love the idea of having gloves in VR, but attaching something to the front of your headset seems like a bad solution to me. Increasing the weight of a headset particularly at the front will put more pressure on your face. Hopefully they'll support Windows Mixed Reality built in camera's in the future. Do they explain anywhere how touching the switches actually works? You'd put your hand in the proximity of the switch, but how to tell it to flip up or down? I suppose you would make a pinch gesture near a switch and then move your hand up and down? If so that would be amazing, particularly if it has some haptic feedback.
  14. Nice find, this is exactly what we need! Do the numbers indicate any kind of virtual distance? 10 metre increments?
  15. They all can be trimmed surely? That should give you enough time to take your hands off the stick long enough to flip a few buttons. Most if not all combat controls absolutely can be mapped to the HOTAS - that is the whole point of a HOTAS in a real plane :-) Granted, I would love to have a 40" touch screen or some positionally tracked vr gloves, so that I could use my left hand more!
  16. mien gott, the company that brought us the problematic G940 is now making an updated version of the problematic x55..... if I had read this a few days ago I would have assumed it be an april fools joke. Will two wrongs make a right? :-)
  17. Why not an Apache? ;-) It could work really well in VR with the Apache's little eye piece instrument system. I would love for any multi-role two seater to happen. Choppers or jets, F-15E, Su-24 AH-1, AH-64 etc Because as amazing as DCS as single player, playing a mission with a buddy is all that more fun. And it's a great way to get people into DCS - it's not hard for them to be a turret gunner in the front of a helo and then they get interested in DCS further.
  18. I was in a similar boat to Tom Hanks, the idea of losing weight to me was torturing myself with running for hours and endlessly chewing lettuce..... diabetic blindness was almost worth the risk hah! After reading Dr. Barnard's book, I almost laughed in relief. All I've essentially done is go for a 15 minute leisurely stroll, and eat pancakes for breakfast, a curry or pasta dish for dinner, with enough left over for the lunch the next day. No extremes, just sensible eating - and it's a heck of a lot easier to get in and out of the cockpit now! Alec Baldwin did it, so I'm sure Tom Hanks could handle this too ;-) 6g3lLr2fH7E
  19. Any type of 'open ear' headphones will help keep things cool on your head. The sound quality is general better and so is the width of the stereo landscape allowing you to hear things more naturally and pinpoint sounds more accurately. They do have one quirk though which maybe a deal breaker for some or a bonus other people, depending on your situation. Being open ear means that sound travels in so a noisy environment will be heard in your headphones, and if you turn them up too loud someone in the same room will also be able to hear your headphones. The bonus is, if it applies is that it allows you to hear people calling out to you easier. So if you have pets or loved ones that need listening out for you won't be so isolated. Something like a Phillips Fidelio X1 or X2 is rich and amazing. But you can get more affordable open ear headphones too. The X2 are better as they have a replacable foam, so they should last you a life time. There are some brands that have a built-in mic if that is required, or you can always attach an Ant-Lion Mic Mod, they are great :-)
  20. Wow this is great! I've been following Dr. Neal Barnard's diet for reversing type 2 diabetes for about 6 months, and my doc took me off the meds, within a couple of months. It's a very similar approach to Dr. John McDougall's methods. I'm absolutely amazed how this isn't mainstream knowledge. People quote studies and statistics of all sorts, but two or three weeks of eating clean, and you know it's the right way, from your waist line, to the mental clarity and ease in the water closet! (not to mention my doc said it was the first time he's ever seen cholesterol improve hah!)
  21. I'm expecting that we'll have a 2nd generation of VR headsets around Xmas time, which will have double the resolution of the current headsets, and they will also likely have foveated rendering etc It's not a long time to wait for significant increase in usability. :-) A few hundred pixels doesn't seem to make much difference, but a doubling of the pixels (and specifically PPI) will do the trick
  22. The Samsung Odyssey also has a resolution of 2880 x 1600 and while on paper it seems like a lot more pixels, in reality you still have a huge screen door effect and lots of jagged edges. You really want double the resolution for DCS to be playable without any trade-off's. With current VR you are trading image crispness/detail/situational awareness for immersion. Which is fine for many people and many play styles, but there is a trade off. In 9-12 months it's likely the trade-off won't exist or not be anywhere near as dramatic :-)
  23. Does a higher PD make for more readable text/HUD/instruments?
  24. If it comes down to budget, for VR I would put money towards getting the best graphics card you can afford, and taking the i5.
  25. Perhaps not quiet 800x600, but it does feel that way comparatively. On the other hand the first time you load up DCS, you see the menu, and after a few seconds you realise that you are standing underneath an Su-27 and you can see that it is HUGE with the wing above you and the engine intake right next to you. Then you sit down in the cockpit, and all of the little switches are actually sticking out from the panels, you could almost run your hand across them. Even in the Su-25T you can see that the flaps panel is attached to the glass frame, and if you lean to the right, you can now see that there is a huge space between it and the front panels. The cockpit is the right size, you feel like you are there. That's something you can only get with a pair of VR goggles :-) Unfortunately the resolution and PPI need to be almost doubled before it becomes as crisp and pretty as a 1080p monitor. Which is why I would wait for 2nd Gen VR. For example, my phone has a 4k screen, and using a $30 Google cardboard headset, I can see that the screen door effect is gone, and text is far more readable than Oculus/WMR. I don't think it will be long before this kind of screen is in headsets, and that will be the minimum entry for DCS to be fully playable without any drawbacks (short of having a PC that can run it!). Which is why I wouldn't recommend even a Vive Pro (if DCS is your main game). (having said that for $200USD you can get a WMR headset which is great for just flying about, and it will give you more or less the same experience a the Vive Pro and fraction of the cost, and then when VR Gen2 comes along you'll know what to expect, but for $800 I just couldn't recommend VR for DCS (for other games, absolutely though))
