The switch I believe is like the coop switch. It's either TWF "on or off" if using the radar. Or it's FHS or RHS if using the IRST sensor. The coop switch is labeled the same way.
-
It seems pretty straight forward to me when I use it. TWF FHS will enable the track-while-fly that tracks the computed highest threat target. Selecting TWF to the RHS turns off TWF. It's like the coop switch that has seperate functions. Coop mode on-off, and low drag and high drag bombs depending on the position, while this switch also covers 2 different functions TWF on or off when using the radar, or FHS and RHS if using the IRST sensor. TWF can work in the auto, head on, and pursuit mode. If you want to lock the target you still press and hold the lock button, or you wait till your in weapons range where it will auto lock if your in TWF. Currently I use it to reduce work load a bit, and to help lock, or to see if a contact is real or just a false contact.

This seems to be way more of an issue on the current contention server. Not sure if it is a scripting thing but playing 80S blue flag the SPO-15 is mercifully quiet in comparison. For some reason on contention everything including on your side is locking you basically at all times it seems. 80's blue flag you also are able to cold start the plane properly, so I wonder if most of the issues are currently due to specific problems on the contention server right now related to the new release.

It worked well enough in Vietnam, of course it still was not a perfect system, and while the pilots did have to obey orders say to wave off, once they were in the thick of it it was pretty much up to them.

I personally am loving the challenge and am having a blast. Playing on contention It requires you to keep your head a bit more out of the cockpit. and check with EWR for where contacts are, but then I'm also used to playing the MiG-21 and the F1CE a lot, where you can't rely heavily on the RWR. Regardless I still feel that it's doing decent right now in contention server, and that's even with both IFF and coop mode between the radar and IRST not working right now. I've certainly been able to get kills in it with both the R27R's and the R73 and they feel pretty satisfying. I feel not having a M2000 or F/A-18 level of RWR is not a deal breaker, and even if the front aspect portion of it was working with the radar on, I feel looking down all the time at it in the heat of combat is not the way to go.

Air superiorty and air interception have a fair bit of mission overlap and the lines get blurred pretty easily. But primarily because the MiG-31 is really not expected to mix it up in WVR it's considered more intercept then air superiority, although you certainly can use it to establish air superioty in reality, and an air superiority fighter can generally do air intercept pretty work, because of it's dedicated air to air role Usually being a dedicated air superiorty fighter means killing stuff in an Air to air environment is the primary focused role of the aircraft where you need both BVR and WVR, using both medium and short range missile, and to out fly and fight any opponent in those arenas. So typically that means air to air dedicated, manuverable, fast, internal gun, short and medium range missiles both radar and IR guided. Being able to do patrols to maintain airspace control. (These don't need to be long patrols if you have close bases and quick turn around times)

Ah...was that mentioned anywhere? I don't recall seeing it in the changelog, or on Wags video....wasn't that suppose to be available on early access launch? I Wish I didn't waste half an hour trying to see if I was somehow doing it wrong in mission editor missions where I'm practicing with the weapon systems.
-
So i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong, but having COOP on, when I lock a target up with the IRST, I can't seem to get the radar to lock on as well. Am I missing something?
-
Yeah. Simple fact in terms of processing power and digital systems, by the time the 80s rolls around is where the west just blasts ahead. So while the MiG-29 9.12 would do great against F-4E, and could hold it's own vs the F-16A's and even to a degree the F-15A, by the time they arrive in any numbers to the Frontline units in 1986 they are basically 5 to 10 years behind compared to the latest F-15C's and handful of F-16C's block 25 stationed there
-
Thing is the Soviets planned to achieve air superiorty the way they did in ww2, and they did it with numbers and short range aircraft, and quick turn around times. It's a different model, but the plan was to still control the airspace, just with overwhelming numbers, and mobile SAM support, That's why so much focus is on robustness and being able to land and take off from remote airfields, and have quick turn around times.
-
I agree. I always think of the MiG-29 as a MiG-21 on steroids and dialed up to 11 which is what I felt they were going for. It's mission profile was basically the same. Just "upgraded" for newer times. Intercept and point defence. And light air superiorty and ground support near the front line, and move with the troops as they take NATO airfields,or work from forward operating posts, as the line moves forward.

I'm mean I've been killed by stingers Hawks and Roland's in Multiplayer. Might have tanked one stinger and limped it home, but they either cripple or kill me fine.
-
Not sure if this is a specific issue due to options in the server, but whenever starting a cold jet in the contention multiplayer server the gyros won't align after waiting 30-40 seconds to let them warm up and pressing the J + 9 keys. Also no matter how long i wait the fast alignment complete light won't come on. Im mission editor, just placing a jet on random airfield I can get everything to work fine. So I'm not sure where the issue is.

MIG-29 confirmed release date September?
CrazyGman replied to The Gryphon's topic in DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum
I mean sometimes there are complications and a patch might get delayed a day, but based on the rhetoric from Nineline and Bignewy and the hype building on ED's Discord i would at this point say highly likely to be released tomorrow. I'm happily surprised myself. I was fairly sure we wouldn't see it till the end month. Can't really complain about being wrong though. -
MIG-29 confirmed release date September?

All good. Lol we know enough to get into the air, navigate to their base and then crash into our oppenents at least. JK 0e8400d0-5ff5-4da0-ac4f-2bfd2069917b.mp4 Super excited. Time to find a way to get off work. -

I mean I'm doubtful but hopeful Seems early with where the videos wags had released are at, but maybe... -
There is one thing I still don't quite understand. How does it work when you select both a beacon and a waypoint ? What is then is actually depicted on the hud and HSI?
-
So it sounds like It's how I thought and similar to how it is with the Viggen cartridges. You just can have a bunch that you pre program that you can then select between, and you don't have to constantly make new ones each time if you want the same set of waypoints. Except since the MiG-29 doesn't actually have cartidges. It's more like handing a playbook set of waypoint instructions that you give to the ground crew so you can go -"program waypoint set Sierra into the jet please"

Not going to lie I learned originally in metric when doing flight Sims flying German and Russian planes in IL-2, and then with the MiG-21 and MiG-15 as my first planes in DCS, and I actually prefer flying metric. However for the Mi-24P I had the labels in English for the first couple of weeks to help rapidly learn her. Then when I had it down I switched back to Cyrilic. I'll probably do the same for the MiG-29. Sorry learning morse code, and nautical flags are the first 2 side quests on my SIM agenda. Cyrilic is a distant third.
-
Ehh I don't think you really need to make any allowances. Most DCS players prefer to go FF Master Race anyway if it's a decent option, and the ones that don't are going to have to face a bit of hopefully just friendly ribbing from both their teammates and oppenents likely. Then when LAZUR datalink becomes availible, you'll get some interesting options that are unique to the FF MiG-29. I feel the FC3 should still be around though so new players can get their feet wet, but I think when people see the difference between the somewhat crude (though good for the time it was made) FC3 and the FF people will go for the more authentic feeling one.

Depending if I'm attacking high starting a SARH joust, i might change programs to conserve counter measures when above 6000m. Or if I feel the risk is high that I might get giraffed when flying high over terrain, then I might initially have rear mode selected to dump a lot all at once if I get ambushed.
-
Yep. There's some disadvantages to be sure, but they are more then workable IMO, even with the 5 second delay. Usually if you want the countermeasures to do anything anyway you need them to go in a decent burst regardless. It does requires more discipline and a bit of planning, but I'm used to using the limited flares and chaff in the MiG-21 and the F1 so I don't see it as a huge issue. Since I see myself mostly flying one engagement per sortie with the MiG-29 for air to air (and that's kinda it's wheelhouse anyway) I think using 2 maybe 3 activations of the counter measures at most would be all that would be really required. If I needed more then that then likely something has gone terribly wrong, and I over committed.
-
I'm aware. I've been following the SPO-15 conversation as well. It's going to be mostly a mixture of EWR and visual when possible and measuring rough angles from the frontal zones of the SPO-15, which will be fairly imperfect. Again which is why I would like some chaff to assist since my notch is not likely to be fully spot on.
-
Yeah against a single oppenent, I can bank on the 29's ability to get speed, and altitude and throw the missile further and faster then my oppenent usually, if I decide the high approach. In that case yeah I don't really need chaff. But against a second oppenent in the flight I would like some chaff to help with notching the wingmans shot though.

Planning on using greater energy and cranking, and banking on your missile getting there first?
