  1. Hmmm... Fond memories of Capricorn One. Telly Savalas yelling, "and keep your g#dd*mn head down!"
  2. Lots of variables to factor in. If Flyby sticks with one monitor, then he could very well be happy with the 5850, especially if he doesn't get into some other game that is *really* demanding on graphics. As for me, my longer term goal is to have multiple displays. Currently, I'm leaning toward using a sizeable LCD TV screen as the camera view, but I haven't completely ruled out going with a 3 screens wide arrangement yet. Right now, I'd rather put the additional display horsepower into a touchscreen running TouchPal (or perhaps LEAVU by then), and possibly small screens behind MFD button collars. On top of that, I run other games and some of those could get to be very demanding on graphics. Time will tell.
  3. Maybe this info will help: Thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=45325&highlight=Evo+Force Post with settings, etc.: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=755405&postcount=18
  4. Well, the latest in the rumor mill about nVidia doesn't look as promising as before: http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/12/21/nvidia-castrates-fermi-448sps/ I don't remember if you mentioned it before Flyby... how many screens do you intend to run? Personally, I'm still in a holding pattern. It would be nice to see nVidia 3xx, Lucid Hydra, and Intel i9 items out on the market... if for no other reason than to help drive prices down on the current stuff. ATM, I'm leaning toward an i7 920 with an ATI 5870. Analysis paralysis, don'cha know! ;) Edit: It looks like the first Intel 6 core / 12 thread processor will be released as an i7 980x instead of as an i9. http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/12/14/models-names-and-pricing-revealed-upcoming-intel-cpus/
  5. It's a product for sale in the market place. It competes against other offerings. In the grand scheme of things, with so many dollars in potential sales at stake, spending a few bucks on some promotional material is a no-brainer. You have to remember, not everyone involved with the decisions related to purchasing are jet jocks. You have government weenies of both the elected and appointed kind that have their hands on the purse strings too. A bit of eye candy and techno-babble can help make the difference with them (sad to say...).
  6. SnowTiger, don't you realize that you are expected to slog through the threads like everyone else? ;) Hmmpf!!! :smartass: ddahlstrom gave you a good summary there! What needs to be realized though (and you may already know it), is that if you are going to undertake using TouchPal (and/or BSVP) it is not a trivial task. It gets into a lot of things that will require you to "do your homework". I don't say that to discourage you, or anyone else... it has been accomplished by a number of people, so it is entirely do-able. But what you will find is that everyone's setup differs from others in some way(s). Fortunately, there is a wealth of information here as a resource, and some very helpful folks. I hope to avail myself of this stuff once I finally settle on a new gaming desktop machine, and related equipment. In the meantime, I keep reading, and trying to let it all soak in. It's been a real trip watching the capabilities and people's setups evolve. From watching folks get 2 screens going with the sim's built-in support, to seeing people doing 3 screens with either a Matrox TH2Go or SoftTH, to TouchBuddy and then TouchPal (which stays synchronized with the cockpit switches), and then BSVP adding in gauges. Meanwhile, there are guys building *very* cool cockpits, and coming up with some very ingenious solutions to challenges along the way. And now we have Lockon FC 2.0, DCS:A10C, and the Leavu project on the near horizon. It's a *very* good time to be sim'ing! :)
  7. I would have to agree with Stuart on that. For what you are describing, the physical orientation of one monitor to the other shouldn't matter. (You might run into some weird looking menu layout screens before you get into the missions.) You're not talking about stretching the camera view to the second monitor, so it wouldn't matter if you placed the second screen above, below, or to either side. Of course, moving the mouse cursor from one screen to the other may be (ahem) non-intuitive. ;) Since you have touch screens, that could be less of a concern for you. :) Check out the TouchPal related threads, and you should be able to find the guidance you need.
  8. A source for small VGA displays: http://www.aliexpress.com/product-gs/269195352-8-inch-LCD-monitor-for-car-PC-wholesalers.html http://www.aliexpress.com/category/100005088/Used-Monitors.html
  9. Very nice!
  10. Note to E.D.: Please fee free to leave this out of future DCS series releases.
  11. SoftTH works with DCS:BS Here is a place to start: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=39577
  12. Very nice! The credits reminded me of those folks who go all out and synchronize their home Christmas lights to music being broadcast on low power AM for folks to drive by and check out. As in: TSO rawks! :punk: (and so does the 104th)
  13. You can put a hinged cover over the step's hole. Either let it just swing down by gravity, or you can spring load it a bit. It may not completely make up for the change in looks, but maybe you can get creative with whatever is painted on the side to camoflage it (ie. make a decal of the same dimensions as the step cover's outline). Just make sure you engineer it so that it isn't pinching your foot/toes in there. Maybe make one that is spring loaded to two positions... down for step concealment, and up (inward, if there is room) for ingress/egress. Alternatively, just make a removable plug to fit the hole. Leave it inserted when your not in the pit, to enhance its looks. Remove it when it is time to climb in. When you're in the pit, you won't be able to see the step hole any ways, so it's not much of a problem for it to be out then. That's probably the easier/safer approach. :)
  14. Naaawww... it would be shouting about how blue bricks link up, while red ones don't, after someone comes up with a mod. ;)
  15. *Now* we know where Barack Obama has been getting all these "Czars" from!!!
  16. Now they would just look silly with all that glitter makeup on... ;)
  17. I *KNEW* it!!!! :smartass:
  18. Not a quickie to answer as there are variations on the CAR-15 CAR-15 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAR-15 M-4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAR-15#M4_Carbine
  19. Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion. Just as others are entitled to theirs. You'll find a number of us on here that have a philosophy that goes something like this: 1. Glowing Amraam wasn't obligated to show us *anything*. 2. Some folks in the community asked for *something* for Christmas. 3. GA threw some clips together from his work in progress, polished it up nicely, and put it up. He clearly indicated that it was a teaser, a little something to whet the appetite. 4. We see that as GA did something nice. Many of us appreciate *that*. 5. We see complaining about how 'it wasn't enough' as counter-productive. Why say anything that would possibly steer GA, or anyone else contemplating an offering to the community, toward thinking, 'well screw it, it will just lead to people complaining'? I appreciated his work, and taking the time to give us a teaser. I even gave him a good natured poke back. I want to see people encouraged to do such things, and remain mindful that they didn't have to do anything at all. Why someone would say something discouraging/unappreciative in such circumstances is, frankly, a bit puzzling.
  20. He just seized on an excuse to show off the cool flames against the black background. ;) Nice, GA.
  21. Or... - Select the appropriate diameter sized metal tubing - Thread the desired wiring through it with some excess left over on each end. - Carefully squeeze the tubing down nearly flat in a vise. - Bend the (now) essentially flat piece to the desired angle. - Solder/attach wiring, etc. as desired.
  22. As an alternative to Alt-Tab'ing: 1. Use the windowed mode, which should expose your Windows task bar if you have it setup accordingly. 2. If you have not done so yet, add the "show desktop" shortcut/icon to your quick launch bar (down by the Windows "Start" button). 3. When you need to 'clear your desktop' in a hurry, you can just click on the "show desktop" icon on the quick launch bar. For extra fast -ahem- clearing, leave the mouse cursor parked on the show desktop icon when you aren't using the mouse for other things.
  23. Can you find out how they are doing it? If they are just blocking the ports usually used by common VOIP programs, you may be able to just have the TS use other (non-typical) ports(s).
  24. OK, cool. Hopefully he gets off easy with a quick fix on the mode thing, or something else along that line.
