  1. In the same way you could have a menu option in comms to "Copy" and then later go to the kneeboard and access a page with the information in handwriting as if you had wrote it down during the read-off. You could even trigger an animation, make it so that a time period was allotted for the taking off the note, etc
  2. They are too expensive but then I'd say that about a lot of things. However that may be they are wholly better than the Crosswinds in the mind of this virtual pilot. I have never liked the roller skate rudders such as they are, they simply don't feel like a real control in the way a stick and throttle can, again, to this virtual pilot. I was instantly a better pilot with the TPR, it's not a small difference and I start noticing it as soon as I pull out of the hanger and head out to the runway. This wasn't true of the Crosswinds which worked a whole lot better than the CHs they replaced but didn't make me a better pilot nor increase my immersion. Speaking of immersion, yeah, I put on my hood and move those rudders it feels like I'm moving some facsimile of a real control, not a feeling I get with the Crosswinds. It's not that they're bad, at the price they're about as good as it will get. They are not however as good as it can get now that the TPR is available. I cant disagree with your comments on the test of time and Thrustmaster has certainly earned our wariness with the Warthog. I do note that the TPR pedals get past the skin deep beauty of the WH, there are pictures posted online of the internals if you care to search and things look good inside as well as out with the TPR, not something anyone would say about the WH. So yeah, I'd pay more even though I already paid too much. These are a clear step up and I have the money to throw at them. I still say if someone like Logitech stepped into the premium flight control market with a decent product at a decent price it would be a bloodbath.
  3. Not true... You DO need them!:) In truth while I never liked the price and still don't, now that I've had them I would pay more. Seriously; people blow these things off and I don't blame them, I did the same thing. It turns out I was wrong. These are underrated right now but I suspect that is going to change once enough people get past the price and review them.
  4. It's love/hate for me in regards to VR; hate the loss of resolution, love being "in the cockpit" as it's often described. That said I have to agree with others who've said that can't go back to 2D, it died for me about 20 seconds after entering the virtual cockpit.

    TM TPR Issues

Yes, I leave them completely out of the Target profile. When doing that in DCS the HOTAS will be a virtual device and the pedals are seen as a separate controller. I gave up on trying to make them all work in Target because I failed to do so unless I dropped an axis on the HOTAS. Doing that gave me the pedals but I didn't want to give up the axis so instead pulled the pedals out of the profile. Once I did that all I had to do is the usual delete all axes in DCS and then set them to match the assignments in Target for the HOTAS and the pedals can be press set.

Is there a reason why you're leaving them in profile? Take em out and program them separately in DCS and everything will work without issue as you'll then have have two devices and all the axes you'll need. There is no loss leaving them out because you don't need any fancy programming to set up the pedals but with the pedals in the profile you will not have enough axes no matter what you do, you'll have to compromise somewhere. Also remember that once in game you'll have to remove all the axis assignments because they're going to be wrong and set them yourself. You'll have two devices, the HOTAS being one virtual device and the pedals the second. It helps if you take a picture in target to reference where it has assigned the axes on the HOTAS so you can reference it in DCS or you can just go into free flight and trial and error fiddle it there. The pedals can be set simply by selecting the axis and then entering by moving the pedals themselves. Make sure you're selecting the pedals and not accidentally assigning to the HOTAS. The same will work for some of the HOTAS axes but some will have to be done by selecting from the drop down. I'm traveling so I cant post pictures of my settings page but you'll figure out what I'm talking about easily enough once you get in there. Everything is going to start working fine once you get the pedals out of the profile.
  7. Makes sense. I'd like to get a lefty trackball and go that way but I'm strongly right handed; I can barely masturbate going lefty. *Embarrassed*
  8. I was wondering that as well...
  9. I don't find the controllers any more or less immersive than simply using a mouse, mine being a logitech trackball mouse which I have velcro'ed to a strap on my thigh. This removes the need for an area to place a mouse pad and gives me a good muscle memory mapping between the joystick and mouse which are always in the same place in relation to each other. I imagine it's a personal thing but when I grope around looking for something in feel-around mode that tends to pull me out of the cockpit more than anything else.
  10. I was able to program all of them without too much screwing around and I'm new to Target. To the thread in general and particularly a new guy that is just picking target up and has been reading these threads trying to figure it out: It was said above to always use an advanced profile instead of a basic profile. It's good advice; it's absolutely no more difficult to use and has functions you'll need. IMO basic shouldn't even exist because it in no way eases anything and yet I couldn't even complete my first profile with it because it lacks some fundamental features. I wasted a few hours learning that lesson...
  11. The tension is quite light on the stick, the throttle will depend on whether you remove some of the goo they use for resistance. It doesn't take much to hold them in place so you wont need to go crazy with the Velcro if you decide to go that way.

    VR

I've read it was "adult" content that was primarily the business case in developing VR and that at this time it is it's largest revenue stream. Not sure of the truth of that because I saw no evidence put forth in the oped and it sounded a lot like someone reasoning it through and outing their conclusions as fact. In any event assuming it is true we have porn to thank for our freshly minted 3D cockpits so if you haven't already thanked porn enough... ;) Irregardless of that I have to concede that despite my dislike of the low res 3D cockpit the feeling of being there and being able to look around instantly made the old school 2D flight a non starter for me. It is so much more compelling to me and words really fail to describe it; or at least words available to this pathetic old man.
  13. I've got a desktop 1080 and all the other stuff you'd expect to find in a recent high end gaming lappy and I can say for sure that I had to bitchslap my settings pretty hard to get VR up at 45 frames. It's a mark you need to make or you'll be facing more than low res, you'll have shimmer and various other artifacts. I'm not trying to dissuade you per se, I am saying to beware of what you ask for because your simming world will never be the same after you get in that 3D cockpit. If you're like me it will be a revelation and you wont fly in 2D again outside of joystick setup and other such duties. On the other hand your VR world may be a love/hate relationship as well because of the spec and you find yourself with no real win either way. Of course I can only speak personally in this matter but I do groan when I get in the cockpit and behold all that low res going on all around me; I wouldn't want it to get much worse. Don't get me wrong, I love it, as I said VR was a revelation and I can't see myself returning to 2D flight. But man, it's a big step back from the highly detailed graphics to which we've all become accustomed.
  14. I've got a lappy with a desktop1080, decent CPU, 32 gigs, etc and I'm thinking your going to struggle a little bit. It's crucial that you get your frame rate up and I really kicked my settings in the teeth to make that happen. I suppose expectations are everything but you should be aware that you need to hita minimum floor or it's going to look pretty darn bad with shimmering and other artifacts adding to the low res nastiness. I'd consider trying to hang tough and see if you can get more specific input.
  15. If it's me I'd go TARGET on the HOTAS and handle the pedals in game. You'll have two controllers in the settings and and adjust the bedals there. It's a god bet the Axes wont be right out the gate so you'll have to adjust those but that's situation normal.
  16. Not specifically Wicked, I was referring to the need for having a bluetooth dongle so on the odd occasion the other fellow could use the controllers when the need comes up. One reason that came up for me was that stupid desktop window inside the WMR portal (screen mirroring) putting drag on the whole show. I'm fairly new to this myself so I cant comment knowledgeably about your problems but I had some struggles myself which may give you some ideas of things to check. I had to set a control to center or reset view, forget which it is called in there. This is needed both to place you back where you're supposed to be in the cockpit when you inevitably loose your orientation and also it fixes some focusing issues. I had a lot of shimmering and blurriness present when I first went into the cockpit and this was largely fixed by getting my frame rate up; once I did things started looking better. This was accomplished originally by pulling back my settings fairly hard, after I read about checking the portal for an open desktop and shutting it off I went through my WMR house and sure enough, there was a desktop spawned on one of the walls which I shut off. After I did that I found I was able to turn around and add back in some of my freshly cut settings which cleaned things up some more. I would say that I do not have a clear picture in every respect. If I turn my head to look down at say, the left MFD, it's legibility is poor. If I move my head down right in front of the gauge it is clear as can be, just like seeing it in 2D. I see similar things all around me in terms of the clarity of various objects in and out of the cockpit. If I read it right this is normal, a limitation of the tech. edit... Forgot about hannibal. You can still use the mouse to click on anything clickable just as you did before. Having the controllers out and about is not very convenient and not as easy to use as the mouse for manipulating the switches. Mine have found their way into a drawer until needed for something.
  17. Did you use the windows update repair tool yet? I had to add a user to the computer and switch to it to get the download which I installed for all users. I then switched back to my regular account and all was well. I've done that a few times to get around windows update errors.
  18. So there I was with my "so last year" flat screen happily flying and smiling; then I decided to try VR just a few days ago. It aint perfect. It can be irritating dealing with the switches and everything feels like 10 years ago or more in graphics. I started asking questions like "Why the hell cant I have variable zoom using the same zoom slow commands instead of something completely different that isn't variable?" And "Is that splotch up ahead the aircraft carrier" The other side of the equation though is immersion going through the roof. There is nothing like being there in the cockpit and looking around, of having that perspective. No amount of track IR gives you that sense, doesn't matter how big the screen, how big the triple screens, it's a whole different thing. This VR is what sims have always wanted to be when they grew up. Now just a few days later I really don't want to fly in 2D, it's a pale facsimile of the simulation in VR. On the other hand I can get really irritated in VR with the stupid hood getting sweaty and/or uncomfortable, trying to find ground/air targets, Quake 2 graphics. I have a sort of love-hate relationship going on with it I suppose. For me there is no going back despite the problems. I'm VR from here on out. Color me sold.
  19. I think it should be variable and along with center view mapped to the same buttons for zoom in and out as the standard zoom command.
  20. Get the bluetooth dongle, you''ll need to occasionally use the controllers to change settings in steam or sometimes to go around the cliff house and find where WMR has randomly opened up a desktop, store, instance of edge, etc. Its the desktop that gets you because your game will be mirrored there and that hurts your performance.

    TM TPR Issues

I installed the drivers but then left the TPRs out of the Target profile because I needed 10 axes. Had no problems at all with it and the pedals are great; not a single complaint other than price.
  22. I had a pair of pedals that lasted quite a long time, I flew Falcon 4 with them back when it came out. I have just a few days ago replaced them with the TPR which is hugely better in every way. I do have to wonder if it will last the more than ten years my previous pedals lasted? *Hmmmm* I've been in your shoes very recently and my last paragraph was the preface for where I'm headed. Rudder pedals can last a long time. Even crappy pedals that were fairly poor on day one. I have the feeling you may want to consider opening up your budget a little. You are probably going to have these things for a while and you're not far below the Slav's, TPR, etc. Just something to think about. It's always cheaper to do it right the first time than the second time.
  23. I'm sorry but I'm still not buying it. He ran it up the flagpole, if you've been in you know what that means. There is more here than meets the eye but then that's usually the case. I'm not calling the OP out, he had his reasons and I respect them if for no other reason than because I must. They are not however what some of you are saying. The services love their adverts, don't forget that it wasn't that long ago (pre Top Gun) they were struggling to get as many pilot recruits as they wanted. Again, unless something has changed very, very, very much since I served, the services love looking good and these videos made them look good. But he's taken down his channel and I've little doubt it was without cause. I promise you it's not because classified info is flowing into the hands of the enemy. It also wasn't because the brass thought classified info was was flowing into the hands of the enemy. Nor was it because they hate looking good. Think about it...
  24. Yeah, I'm not sure if I understand what the need is, he's run these up the flagpole and been anointed with official approval. Unless something has changed since I was active these kinds of videos were not just tolerated but encouraged because they make everyone look good and making everyone look good never goes out of style. The OP has been doing that if he's been doing anything.
  25. Yep, every parent knows this one, prevents disappoint and increases the plausible deniability window. :D
