  1. It’s only “useless” with the default programming. Adjust it to a more realistic dispense sequence and it serves its intended function perfectly.
  2. Yes in DCS that’s how it’s done as you can’t see/reach for the controls on goggles in a game. In reality NVDs have no connection to the aircraft, hence there are no controls for them in the cockpit.
  3. Why “review” the LITENING in the A-10C? The only commonality will be the physical capabilities of the pod (ie magnification, the fact is has LSS and a designation capability etc.) and the pod generated symbology (crosshairs, yardstick, laser status). Most of the display symbology and all the control functions are aircraft dependent as so vary from platform to platform. And given the significant avionics interface differences between the Hog and Hornet it’s not likely to be that similar.

  5. The "Slap switch" is the dispense button on the left cockpit wall above the throttle. This switch is dedicated to running expendables program 6. Best used as a reaction to a missile launch. Personally I configure it for use against an IR AAM/SAM. I don't use the auto programs (auto CMS modes do not function the same in DCS as IRL and aren't particularly effective) so they are unchanged Quite similar to those I developed for the A-10C, but condensed in to the 6 programs available in the Hornet, and slightly adapted to allow for the AA role.
  6. Such systems weren’t a thing when aircraft like the Hornet where designed and built. Retro fitting them can be done, but only if the need is there. In the real world, where tactics, techniques, and procedures exist and are followed, there often isn’t the need to add such systems to legacy platforms. Adding such systems to legacy platforms is expensive and complex from a design and modification point of view, often prohibitively so. Missile approach warning systems are not the magic solution people here seem to think. They can help yes, but aircrew still fly exactly the same way they did before they came along.
  7. Stores asymmetry is measured in ft/lbs of torque. I can't be measured in weight because a given weight produces a different torque loading depending on how far it is from the centre of rotation (i.e. outboard vs inboard stations). Information on how to calculate the stores asymmetry is in the pocket checklist (NFM-500).

Manual with custom programs, in the absence of a realistic and capable semi-auto/auto CMS function. 1- RF Old 2- RF New 3- IR SAM 4- IR Pre-empt 5- A/A Merge 6- Slap Switch IR SAM/AAM This gives 3 expendables dispense programs available with a button press, CMS aft for prog 1-4 as selected, fwd for Prg 5, slap switch for prog 6.

  10. Very much needed. I’d also suggest the ability to set a fixed IAS for the tanker, rather than TAS which can lead to significant changes in IAS with winds aloft.
  11. It does. But that comes from the aircraft systems not the weapon seeker.
  12. Not for the maverick. It is not capable of BHot/WHot display. All the polarity switch does is determine what contrast the seeker looks for, be it lighter or darker than the background. The symbology colour change is merely an indication of which is selected. The IIR/TV Maverick neither knows nor cares what is is tracking, as long as there is sufficien contrast it’ll track, be it a tank, car, or bush. In DCS, as modelled today, Mavericks will track any unit/static model with a hit box.
  13. Both. With I choose depends on what aircraft and mission I’m flying. Although more often than not the monitor and thus TIR wins over VR due to resolution. I’ll see if that changes when my Pimax arrives.
  14. Employ more weapons with appropriate spacing. The CBU-97/105 has a fixed pattern size regardless of HOF. Set HOF to 500 (700 in uneven terrain) to minimise the time the BLU-108s spend on their parachutes (and therefore subject to wind drift) and forget about it.
  15. Drag index for a LAU-115 with 2 LAU-127 is 8.8. With two AIM-120s on the launchers it’s 18.8. Drag index for a single 330 Gal tank on the wing is 14.5. So yes, two AIM-120s is quite draggy, as are the clean launchers. An AIM-120 on the fuselage stations only has a DI of 4. The DI for a single LAU-61 is 31.5, before you account for the BRU-33s, shouldn’t be surprising that 8 of them slows the jet down so much really should it?!
  16. The thrust isn't overly relevant, its the engine RPM/airflow in to the engine that is important. The engine control systems control the engine RPM through fuel flow, the. Thrust produced is a effect of that. The compressor blades would be highly unlikely to break, what is more likely are things such as a flameout or compressor stall due to unstable airflow.
  17. It’s to prevent engine damage/compressor stalls and surges due to high speed/high airflow. Pretty much all modern fast jets have such a feature in the engine control system.
  18. In DCS yes. In reality it’s a much more complex than that. Some systems can certainly determine if the threat is targeting the aircraft or not. It depends on the type of system (UV/IR/RADAR), type and number of sensors, and processing capability/software & mission data design.
  19. MAWS on Typhoon is an active RADAR based system. MWS on the A-10C uses the UV signature from the missile's motor, not IR.
  20. Not on fast jets. Focus set to infinity in the bay and no pilot I’ve ever known has adjusted it in in use. You look under the Google’s to view the cockpit displays, not through them. PVS-14 are rather old, and quite poor monocular NVDs for ground types. The binocular NVDs we give fast jet aircrew are considerably better (and more expensive), although a bit less hardy. We’re slowly moving away from clip on NVDs to systems integrated into the helmet as well. And they don’t even have a option to be focused.
