Iron Mike has already said Skynet will be included with this module. Maybe not in those exact words, but he has used all of them at some point. Looks a bit like HB is living up to their reputation for excellence. Still needs the in-flight entertainment system and I don't see a tap for adult beverages anywhere, but I'm sure those will be in the finished product. For the record I'm a bachelor starting Wednesday and the week before September I'm off work, so what a perfect time to release a new module. Just sayin'...

You could hear that? I know his hair is amazing, but I only saw it Still made me laugh. You might be thinking about McAuliffe at Bastogne. I can't believe he called me pretending to be a military pilot in the comfort of my home office without the endless layers of military stupidity and limitless BOHICA moments a game. Heresy. For that he has to add detailed modeling of the engineering spaces on the super carrier so I can go laugh at the watch. And eat a sandwich in the control room.

There is no where on the map on which the stadium was placed where you would not be nervous... My dad and I used to laugh at his aerial gunnery book where it talked about high altitude, high speed precision bombing by the B-24. "Every bomb in this picture is in the target area". Yup. Every bomb hit the ground. Hi precision. About how I fly helicopters.

This got bought first day, looked at, and put on the shelf. I finally pulled it up just because I was completely sick of deserts, and it's becoming my goto. Just enough big airfields, lots of room for boats, and if you space your AAR resources right you can go anywhere you want. Kind of like the real world, and I might tank off a KC-130 or -135 here, an S-3B there, and and Il-76 down there... It helps that I create my own missions, and I've done some formations on the west side at low/mid altitude and the views are stunning. For me, at least, it's been a pleasant surprise how much I enjoy the map. For my next trick I'll come up with some scenarios to fly. The nice thing is I completely ignore geopolitics. Good guys over here, targets over there...

DCS: F/A-18C Screenshots and Videos (NO DISCUSSION)

You start hot at Nellis with three bags and a couple A2A missiles for looks. I didn't add any of the ground fluff I usually put in as eye candy; pretty bleak! Zero wind, some cloud for decoration but they should be no factor, sun high in the sky. All four tankers run ~200nm race tracks. That's good if you have trouble hooking up, and bad if you need gas badly. This is NTTR, though, so lots of airfields. My usual, obsessive, stubborn method is tank, dump, tank, dump. If all you're doing is A2AR drop the bags; shouldn't need them. No TACAN on the tankers; never works for me and data link/radar should solve that problem for you. There's a formation flight in there; fly over the TACAN to trigger it. I usually put an F-14A as lead (big, nice to look at, just enough smoke to find it easy), but replaced it with an F/A-18 in case you don't have the -14. Small, hard to find, but if you do it right she's right there in front of you. It's a slow, 460nmi run, but watch out for terrain! Details are in the briefing. Button numbers, frequencies, all of it. My missions have set rules for frequencies, especially tankers and AWACS, so if I know the call sign I know the freq. Nevada - Formation - A2AR.miz

SHHH!! It's supposed to be a secret! I do own a pair of original Serengeti Drivers - the ultimate aviator glasses. Bought them at the Navy Exchange in 1982.

I hear ya! I read that partly for education (some of them really know what they're talking about, and no idea where they get those references!) and partly for humor. On the other hand, good for them! It's always nice to be able to talk about things that interest you with people who share that interest. And who knows, maybe the Mk 47 motor will impart an extra furlong per fortnight at burnout! For the record, there's an F-14 in front of me in a different window. Paused. Eye stretching exercises. Very serious business. Keeping an eye on Jester!
-
Uh huh. Denial. That's always how it starts. Then Jester ejects you and takes over... I was especially offended this morning when, after about an hour of close formation with an F-14 (after IronMike's denial I now know that was il-intent with which Jester was watching me) that never bothers to tell me when, or in which direction, the next turn will be, I hit pause to get something to drink and rest my eyes. And take a screen shot. Very hard core. I'm sure real pilots pause all the time; that's how they pull six hour hops and still manage to hit the boat at night.
-
What map do you want it on? I'll throw some formation flights in there as well; those are the same thing only different. Both of them use pretty much the same skill set. I'm always amazed at how tired I get from an hour of close formation with a lead that doesn't tell me which direction the next turn is...or when...

Running dedicated server on Linux using wine
Raisuli replied to xfirf's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
This is on my list of things to do, and I even have a machine on which to do it. I used to run a few things on Wine that had better performance than Windows, which is a bloated beast. Thanks to Red Hat Linux is also turning into a bloated beast, though. Registry, that abomination they call 'polkit', sysctl, netctl, a few other things. There was a reason for the flat text files that made linux lightweight, screaming fast, and easy to manage. I need to find a distro that hasn't been polluted by all that crap to start with, then get a lightweight gui on top of it. My gut is DCS server should run fine based on what it does. -
For strictly personal reasons (well, maybe not strictly) we need one in Memorial Hermann Life Flight colors, even though this is the military version. Life Flight operated a Bo-105S before they switched to the EC-145s. I like the new livery better, but it is what it is. Then again there are places in Houston where an armed Life Flight chopper might make sense, even if most of those flights are inter-hospital transfers.

I've finally started to get comfortable with A2AR, and can even hook up in the middle of those turns, but it does ratchet up the pucker factor. Of the four probe and drogue (KC-135MPRS, KC-130, S-3B, and Il-76) the KC-130 is A2AR with training wheels, at least for me in the F/A-18. I've started to make my tanker routes boxes rather than racetrack orbit so I only have to deal with 90 degree turns at a time, apart from which I need more practice in those banks. (HA! Listen to me...not so long ago I'd form up with the tanker going north around Ramat David and give up somewhere in Syria closer to Turkey than Lebanon. Now I'm hitting it in the turns, and last night managed to hit at dusk with < 2,000 pounds in my tanks...)

Yeah...the bit about F-14s taxing with the wings out is more or less silly, particularly when the AI runs them all the way back to shut down. Of course...Tomcat pilots. Gotta wax that mustache before you park, and that can get distracting. Demoing the shelters is pure brilliance; I didn't think about that. Thanks! I did find out the F-18 will fit in the hardened shelters, but it's a bit unnerving with those double tails. I'd hate to do that without a director (or F2 view). Pushback would be an awesome addition. Some day if I have time on my hands I might work on a way to do that with .lua. I did set up a static/real transition lua a long time ago that worked well, so in theory I should be able to either push back or magically transport at the worst. All of this why 'medium' made me chuckle. OnReTech is pretty amazing with customer communications if nothing else, and the map rocks. Needs Karnak castle. And Herod's little palace over by the dead sea. And a few other things they may well be working on. Then again this isn't a tourist map, it's for flying!

Ran into a bunch of oddness with the moving map on my last hop. I have the track for this. Might have forgotten to pause when I went exploring with F11 on final to land at the end, though, because my airplane sort of crashed. For one, the 10 mile map is has completely different saturation and hue than the 20 or 40 miles maps, but when circling around Amman parts of it kept blanking out: This happened while boogieing around the coast of Israel as well. The other thing I noticed was the map getting very strange in places. This is north of Tel Nof And then, back at Tel Nof, some real odd combinations of sodium and LED lighting
-
Medium? If that's a medium you just about have this dialed in; I'd rank it in the 'you've got to be kidding me' category (of course that might be called 'medium' there...) Just flew the same mission, this time the F-14 parked normally. Somewhere. Did find some other issues that I'll check to see if they've been reported before reporting.
-
lua doesn't scare me any. Haven't done a ton with it for lack of application more than anything since I generally fly solo, but I'm sorely tempted to set the lead plane in my formation trainers based on whatever it is I'm flying. Thanks; if I get a few minutes I'll bang on that.

So if a unit triggers an action ( Coalition in zone, 'BLUE', 'Aircraft' 'foobar') is there a way to identify the aircraft type that tripped that action in zone foobar?
-
Maybe Tel Nof. Maybe just DCS AI. Have a couple formation training missions where I chase an air start triggered F-14 around for hour-long tours of the Sinai map (and that other Desert map that syria not be named). At the end the F-14 lands at Tel Nof. First, there's almost no place for an F-14 to park at Tel Nof. I originally used a sheltered spot, but it tried to park with the wings extended. That didn't end well. Then I used spot 1, which worked great, then I told it automatic, and the bloody Tomcat decided to taxi parallel to the runway in the rocks and ran into a tree rather than take the taxiway. Tomcat pilots. You can't take them anywhere! Probably admiring her mustache in the mirrors rather than pay attention to where she's going.

Tel Nof/Ovda Airbase Project, Ideas, Thank you, New 3D Model screens
Raisuli replied to Ghostrida9's topic in DCS: Sinai Map
I sure hope they can work with Ghostrida9 on some of this because...wow. That about sums this thread up. Wow. Not sure how much is applicable to other airfields, but the improved object models should be applicable to more than just Tel Nof (which coincidentally is my primary airbase on this map right now...at least it's in !desert). -
Monty Python's greatness was still 70s; the Meaning of Life was downhill from there, but then there's Princess Bride. Ok, you can have Airplane!, too. Islands of greatness in a sea of banality... Besides, the bare majority of the 80s was spent chained to an oar.
-
No wonder he drives me batty. I didn't like late 80s pop culture the first time I had to live with it! At least he's not 70s pop culture! I guess Clown (Jester II) will be 60s pop culture, which is even worse and might cause traumatic flashbacks! Fortunately PIC can dictate cockpit discipline! "Tell me what I need to know, otherwise STFU!" <edit> I should add, for the record, that whether or not you like the result HB does everything insanely well. I've seen very few software companies that pay attention to detail like this. That doesn't mean it fits every audience, and there are things HB has done (very well) that I really dislike, even if I admire the quality of the work they've done! It almost makes me sad to be critical, because the skill and effort that went into it is praiseworthy in and of itself. </edit>

That was my first thought, but none of the axis are bound to the UFC. I also went through the binding on the AP button and the only thing there is the one that belongs. I think the flight computer has become aware, and isn't happy about the meat sack behind the stick.
-
I have a formation training mission set up; ~500nmi, 1:13 to complete, low alt, turning bits, etc, etc, etc. The upshot is the only controls I touch for that hour and a quarter are pitch, roll, left and right throttle, and head tracker. Every once in a while the UFC will light up with AP commands, uncommanded, of course. No idea why, and I haven't been able to correlate that with much. Anyone have any brilliance to share? It's not a problem, just really odd, like the airplane thinks I shouldn't manually fly that fast so low...
-
Maybe. I do want to take a look at it first; if I decide to pass it will be the first aircraft module I don't own. I have a hanger full of queens, and it got to the point where the F-14 is one of them, for a few reasons. Someone needs to release another desert map so there will be a terrain I don't own as well...
