Which Air superiority fighter aircraft you fly ?
bumfire replied to mig29's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
29s all the way if I HAVE to jump into a fighter, as I am more of a ground pounder myself. -
The helo missions in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas ? Please tell me you dont really mean it when you say "Heli-Sim" As there is nothing Sim about the helo's in ANY of the GTA games. Maybe enjoyable ? but Sim it is not and, if your basing all of your assumptions on how the KA-50 should fly on the way Helo's fly in GTA, then either this Sim isnt for you or you need to forget about everything you learned about Helo's when playing GTA and start afresh with DCS.
-
The shark is the hardest flight sim out to date, I am still learning it and thats from day 1 of release. Its just not a sim that one can jump into and expect to fly in a matter of hours or days, when I say fly, I mean just that and thats before we even get onto weapons deployment or abris functions and whatever all else. Alot of the times, people who are having problems flying the 50 are normally either fighting the auopilots or have misconfigured their joystick or both or have just jumped into the sim without reading the manual fully and expecting to just be able to take off and start shooting things. Thats normally the case, I had my fair share of cockups and rage on moments when the sim first came out, even now I still get pissed off when something goes wrong that I know was my fault and could of possibly avoided it. Bottom line is, this Sim is NOT another nail in the Sim Industry Coffin, if anything this sim is a nail taken out of the sim industry coffin and with more modules the more nails will be removed :) However, it is hard, it does have bugs and it does have an extreme learning curve compared to easy peasy lockon, stick with it and you will be pleasantly surprised, but stupid thread names like the one above are simply not justified because if anything DCS has revived the waning interest in flight sims in recent years.

If they dont drill someone else will and, considering whats just happened to BP, they will probably be the safest company that will be drilling in the area, as there is no way they want this to ever happen again, so they will do EVERYTHING in their power to avoid such a situation from happening.

I suspect that its broken up and is now in tiny clumps, blobs or globules on the bottom of the sea. No way has it all evaporated, although you would be surprised at how quickly it can evaoporate to some degree or another, but its more than likely been broken up by waves or chemical sprays and has now went sub surface where if it isnt in large clumps it will break down further and eventually dissappear. If that is the case then I doubt very much if that would pose a threat to marine life either now or in the future, the surface slick was the main threat and it seems that has all but vanished. Now we focus our attention on russia, then the floods in pakistan and the earthquakes in china, there's always something.

This thread is gunna end well.

Dont say that, it will give our government ideas to just dump everything and opt for the goshawk so they can save loads of cash, to then throw it all away on fatties who claim benefits because they claim they are too fat to work. -
radio alt, alt hold, autohover and 20%
bumfire replied to ChromeWasp's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
It does exactly what it says it does, it slowly descends you when you are in a hover and only when you are in a hover with the AP engaged. You have to hold the button down until you descend to the altitude that you desire, it goes slow though and can take sometime to get to a desired altitude, especially if you want to drop like 500metres or something, you will sit there for ages trying to get it down, ideally its only good for small adjustments because of the time it takes. It only works down to 4 metres off the ground, any lower and it cuts off along with some other things. So DO NOT try to land by using the auto decent button, you can use it down to say 5 metres but then you must manually descend and land, if you do try and land with it, its likely to end in tears :( The alt hold, you need a fair amount of collective for you to stay at the height selected, too little collective and it wont be able to maintain a steady level height and too much and you will start porpoising up and down or your height will just keep rising. -
radio alt, alt hold, autohover and 20%
bumfire replied to ChromeWasp's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
No, that would be terrain following radar. Radar Alt just tells you your height about the ground and tries very subtly to keep you at that specified height. What it wont do however is keep you X feet above the ground when flying over hilly terrain unless you are above its highest point, as the radar alt beam cannot see the terrain infront of the aircraft/helo. The radar bounces down from the tail of the KA50, so if you are flying along and have a hill infront of you, the radar doesnt seen the hill, it only sees whats directly below the helo, thus when you start flying over the start of an incline, the radar wont see it for a few seconds after you have started to fly over the start of an incline, thus the autopilot wont respond at all or in time for it to avoid crashing into the side of the hill. Its best to use radar alt autopilot only when flying over flatish land or when you can clearly see whats infront of you so that you dont get a surprise kiss in the face by an immovable object. To change height whilst flying with radar alt AP engaged, use the collective brake and keep it held down until you reached the desired alt and then release and it should hopefully keep you at that alt. -
Oh yea, I wouldnt put it past them to do such a thing. Labour and the Conservatives are masters at cutting things that previous Administrations put into place and then blaming the opposition for massive overspending whilst they were in power. That is a very likely scenario and, if the JCA did get cut that is EXACTLY what probably will happen. The conservatives blaming labour for overspending yet again and for choosing an aircraft that Britain simply can not afford, couldnt afford it at the begining and no way can it afford it now. < that will be roughly how it goes.

Oh for sure cancelling this far in has been done before, as you say TSR-2 was a victim to such cuts. We sure are broke, their is no denying it or getting away from the fact. The tin is empty, the Tridents WILL stay and its replacement will get the green light, but I sincerely doubt that they will cut the JCA, it may happen but my personal feelings are that it wont. But cancelling this far in, when its already known that we have spent 2 billion on it so far and, to then cancel when the country is absolutely broke isnt going to fly ( no pun intended ), the media and the opposition will have a field day. However, the JCA is extremely expensive for what it is and, if it doesnt get cut completely there WILL be a drastic reduction in airframes purchased. The reasons I cannot see them cutting it is, A, the amount ready invested, B, the loss to UK businesses and also the fact that we have 2 carriers on the way and C, the media outcry at the continued waste by successive governments when times are hard. Ok granted the carriers could be reconfigured for different aircraft but I cant see it happening and no way will the UK buy Rafale, the thought wont even be entertained. But saying all that, in the end it all comes down to the government jelly bean counters. I wonder if all those new videos showing how much britain needs the JCA on the BBC website in recent weeks, is just a ploy to show off its strengths rather than weaknesses in the hopes that it doesnt get cut ? because to me the videos went over the top with regards to "How Britain armed forces NEED this jet". If I had my way we wouldnt buy it, simply because its far too expensive for what it is, I would rather have the Super Hornet with a brand new batch of SHAR's if they desperately want to retain the VTOL capability. The UK armed forces are all about to feel some bum rapeage, no two ways about it, every single force is going to suffer to one degree or another. The only force I see coming out of this half decently will be the navy with all its new toys its getting and has got over the last couple of years. If you think our cuts are bad, Americas upcoming cuts to its forces are gunna make ours look extremely small and unworthy of the phrase "Defense Cuts".

I havent personally tried to run DCS/lockon under wine, but as Nate says, I seriously doubt that starforce would like it.

Mmmmm, JagUar, Buccaneer, me wants me wants :p -
I agree, JCA is not going to be the best buy for the UK at this moment in time, hornets would be great but, if anyone thinks the UK is going to buy hornets and throw away the £2 billion that they have already invested in the JSF programme, they are sadly mistaken. These rumours are probably more to do with ITAR Treaty than anything, as the loss of sales of the JCA/JSF to the UK will be a tremendous blow to lockheed and the US, thus the UK is merely putting pressure on the US to agree to the ITAR treaty and allow the UK to easily buy and get access to specific parts of techology on the JSF. Basically its a threat, saying that we are seriously thinking about buying super hornets, hopefully to get the US to agree to ITAR to keep the UK in the running to buy the JCA/JSF. Thats how I see it, as no way is the UK gunna walk away from 2 billion quid thats its already invested in the programme, as their would be a MAJOR outcry in the UK due to the money wasted, plus we are building carriers for the JCA, so I really cant see the UK not adopting the thing. But, and their is always a but, I think the Super Hornet is the best choice for the UK at this time, great aircraft and can be upgraded and modded to death, so its perfect for us over here.

I notice that the pod has 3 miniguns per pod, in the sim does all the miniguns fire or is it just the largest ones that fire ? I saw a picture of the ka50 with those pods, ingame and they were firing but it looked as though only the large minigun was firing and the other 2 small ones werent, is that the case ? or do all guns fire correctly ?

As Pilotasso says, no way have they collected a quarter of the surface oil, too widespread for that to of happened, its more than likely sunk, broken down due to wind or chemicals/bacteria or simply washed ashore. Their surface collection systems are not at all efficient enough to collect 1/4 of all the oil that was floating on the surface. The good thing is, they have static killed the well, so its basically capped, it only needs the relief wells that were drilled to hook up and start pumping concrete into it and that will be the job completely done. Now we all just have to see how true BP keep to their word when they say that they are in this for the long haul, come back here in 5 - 10 years time and we will see how much progress regarding cleaning the surrounding enviroment has taken place.

^ Plus they handle excellent in snow/icy conditions, better than alot of newer cars can. I think its due to their thin tall tyres.

Sadly, I doubt that it would ever stand as a record, even if it was timed in an official capacity, simply because it has a pusher prop at the back of it, thus isnt a true helicopter. I think it fits into the Hybrid Class of Aircraft, thus cannot call its self a true helicopter or plane, all due to the pusher prop at the back of it, so the media claims of X2 breaks the Helicopter speed Record is like saying a P-51 breaks the Helicopter speed record, its still impressive though. Now, I could be wrong and no doubt if I am someone here will point it out to me, but any records it does set will not be official records and will not hold any merit in the pure helicopter arena. Take off the prop at the end and its a totally different story, but even then, it still gets beat by another hybrid helo or two, I think the fastest Hybrid helo ever was this one, and man does it look mean, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-72 or was it this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-69

For your plane to have no armour, save for the small windscreen, for you to then get hit by a 30mm round and not know anything about it til you landed was nuts, but I suppose it would be quite hard hearing external noises when you have all the normal noises of a jet to put up with. Then with your helmet/earphones on top which must obscure alot of the remaining noise that you can readily hear, plus your pulling the trigger ontop of all that which must produce a fair bit of noise and vibration, so it is very understandable that you never heard/noticed anything wrong. But, saying that, it is a 50's plane, things back then were built to last, so I presume the Mirage III is a solid piece of kit and took the hit in its stride ? I say presume, as I dont know anything about the Mirage III. Mucho Respect, not because you shot yourself :music_whistling:, but cause you flew a jet fighter which many of us on this board aspire to
-
I cant believe how lucky you are 1, for actually getting to fly a fast fighter jet, which the majority of us can only dream of doing, and 2, lucky that you never shot yourself down :pilotfly: I can see the headlines now, "Fighter Pilot Scores his First Air to Air Kill by Shooting Himself Down". You know what the media is like, they would have a field day with something like that. Is the canopy amoured ? does it have a bullet resistant plate at the front ?, so that if you were to be shot at head on, either from the ground during strafing or from a plane, you would be kinda safe ? Basically what i am asking is, if that ricochet had bounced back up and went straight for your face, slap, bang in the middle of the canopy head on, just infront of where the HUD is, do you think it would it of penetrated ? or is their protection there to minimise the danger ? I know 30mm has got a fair amount of kinetic energy behind it plus whatever type of filling the ammo has, but do you think it could of been stopped if it had struck your canopy head on or any part of the canopy for that matter ? I ask, because I saw a video of a su25 takin 23mm shots to the sides and front, and come away mostly unscathed except for a few dents ( no holes ) and powder burns, and I was wondering if it would be the same for the mirage. Regardless if it could or not, you are still a lucky bugger for getting to fly a jet fighter  EDIT: Your post about your self inflicted damage due to ricochet reminds me about a uk TV series about Tornados, it was either made by the BBC or ITV and it was all about the life of a fictional Tornado Squadron. One of the episodes had your exact problem shown, they were doing strafing tests somewhere and the pilot was warned not to go too low and to watch the angle that the plane attacked from, needless to say when the Tonka opened up, you saw the tracers hit the deck and come bouncing back up and lodge in the pilot or navigators ejector seat, I think it was the pilots? cant exactly recall as its a good 15 years since I saw it. The pilot had to do a smooth landing incase the jolt made the seat go off, once landed the pilot had to ever so slowly climb out of the seat/plane and just as he got down from the plane and with no one in the pit, the seat fired due to the round lodged somewhere on said seat. For the life of me I cant recall the name of the tv series, apart from a few aerial shots of tonkas earning their bread and butter by flying lowlevel, it wasnt that good of a tv programme.
-
Crazy Stuff Ivan, real crazy, I bet you are glad you walked away from that one, as it could of easily ended up in disaster depending on where the round struck. The patch job looks a fair size, those 30mm rounds must make quite a mess. May I ask what kind of Mirage it was you were in ?
-
Are you a pilot on real life and caught a ricochet to your aircraft ? If so that must of been hella scary to see your fired rounds coming back up in your direction.

Sorry I dont have any ideas about the hud missalignment. make sure everything is centred, the TIR and lockon, thats about it from me as I havent experienced the problem you are seeing.
