Making DCS more accessible to new players.
Flamin_Squirrel replied to Vertigo72's topic in New User Briefing Room
So the missions are fine, they just don't cover every topic you want to see covered? I'd say that's a valid point, but not what you asked for in the first place. -

I think your idea of what constitutes 'getting started' sounds much more like 'being proficient'. If you've gone through a training mission, whatever it might be, such as how to drop a bomb, and by the end of it you can do that, the mission did what it was supposed to. That's getting started. The training mission isn't there to answer absolutely any question that you might have, which is what you appear to be asking for. -

You are remembering where YOU struggled. Another player may struggle with something entirely different. New players will find DCS complex. Well actually it's x10 more complex than they realise. Trying to develop an interactive trainer that can anticipate even the majority of questions that might come up would be a monumental task, and I suspect just not within the means of ED to develop. If you want a productive discussion the best thing to do is accept what you're asking for won't happen; that'll allow the conversation to move on and allow for opportunities to think of practical alternatives. -

Beyond identifying DCS is hard for new players (true) and that it needs a virtual trainer (impractical) I'm really struggling to see what your point is. -

"...because I couldn't figure out how to bind a button" is one reason for giving up with DCS I've never heard before. -

I don't think they were trying to be condescending. There are plenty of resources for getting going in DCS, and these will work for most. But as draconus says, there's no way to account for the gaps in knowledge that every single new player is going to have. If you ask a general question like "how do I start this plane" you ARE likely to be told to RTFM. That's not because people are being rude/unhelpful, it's because that really is the fastest/easiest way to reference all the required steps. If you have something specific that you don't understand, that's the kind of question that can be asked on this forum, because someone can provide you with a specific answer. -
ADI has turn rate also; easier to reference than the standby indicator.

It isn't an issue. NWS activates automatically on touchdown, it's not supposed to be turned off.
-
It is functional (unless it's bugged out recently). It's just not immediately apparent it's doing anything until you've travelled some distance (either laterally or axially) from the point where you initially engaged it.
-
To be fair, your argument read that those who were landing fine didn't know what they were taking about, where as those who couldn't were the experts. Which was no less condescending, but also makes no sense. Anyway, do you know if tracks of SC landings are reliable? Watching back in show mo could be useful.

Why are you making things personal? If some people are having success and you're not, it isn't their fault. I'm not seeing a contraction in your scenario either. If you're low your approach will be more shallow than it should be, so it's going to be very easy to drift over the wires. Screenshots or descriptions aren't going to help here either. Can you provide a video showing the issue?

Whether the LSO calls match the IFLOLS is a separate issue to whether the IFLOLS is accurate though.

Question about carrier and windspeed.

Have you've set 30kts for every waypoint? -
Question about carrier and windspeed.
Flamin_Squirrel replied to RTS354's topic in DCS: Supercarrier
It will only follow the waypoints you give it so won't turn into wind. Maybe with later updates. No way to change the wind speed as far as I know. One way around that problem is just have wind set to 0 and have the carrier steam at 30kts, and that's the wind over deck requirement sorted in any direction. -
You have to be on the ground for the wind to make you yaw, so that's not it.

DCS: F/A-18C Features Roadmap for Early Access
Flamin_Squirrel replied to Kate Perederko's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Totally agree. I asked for this and was told we'd get it. *drums fingers* https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=4290129&postcount=489 Yes, you are right. Should be done for every project. We'll do! Thank you. -

To be specific, I was referring to the idea that no rudder input was required from the pilot; this is not the case: I did not mean to imply there was no FCS input at all.

Anyone know what the New and updated HOTAS functions is all about? -
It does not.

Thanks for all the great info GB. Slightly academic at the moment as marshal is around BRC/FB, but is there a prescribed method to make the turn from assigned radial to FB when marshal is say 30 degrees off? e.g. turn so many degrees on reaching platform (or other point in the approach).

This Wednesday I believe.

Really sorry for the confusion guys, they've changed something as what I described was how it used to work, but having just checked, it doesn't any more. When caged it's locked to the centre (it used to move with yaw). When uncaged it shows where you're heading, which while does take into account yaw, can't be used to determine sideslip as it's also affected by wind as has been previously mentioned. Apologies again.
-
It works fine. Fly in NAV mode with a crosswind. Cage the VV. You'll see pitch ladder and a solid VV align to the centre of the hud, and a ghost VV off to one side. The ghost VV is corrected for wind, the solid one is not. Kick the rudder, both will now shift left/right, indicating sideslip. If you fly in AA mode, the VV is always caged, in AG mode it's always uncaged.
-
If the VV is caged it will be an indicator of slip. If it isn't caged, it's a combination of wind and slip.
