I think it is part of why I thought landing the Hornet was harder than the Tomcat, I would often make approaches way to fast and basically dive for the deck and unsurprising bolter in the Hornet while the Tomcat would catch a wire (often the first wire).

F14 Skinners thread (Paintkit in 1st post)
Cytarabine replied to David A Sell's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Beautiful work. Please do release them at some point! -
Sounds like they are reacting as the Phoenix goes pitbull which would be the first indication from the RWR that they have a missile inbound.
-
So would that suggest (when modelled) that we would be best arming up our Tomcat’s with AIM-7F’s so we have the option of either? What are the other performance differences between them? (Are we talking Vietnam era 2% PK vs Gulf War Era 18% PK? (Or something like that!))

You can quickly convert those coordinates online to lat/long. Then deliver JDAMs to your hearts content :) :pilotfly:

Come on Heatblur... you know we all want to go downtown to SAM city. (And there is so much cheese for Tiger to say!)
-
Right you are, sorry the R and B is next to the altitude anyway! No idea what that is either!
-
R = radar altitude B = barometric altitude Generally when your radar altimeter is on as the HUD altitude source.

Do you need to walk the throttles to fly the ball good?
Cytarabine replied to Fisherman82's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I have been doing as Lex describes without even realising it, and it is useful as said for both trapping on a carrier but also aerial refuelling and formation flying. I find it necessary with the Hornet in part because of the spool up and down time of the engine. This seems particularly important as you turn in as the change in attitude can cause you to be too fast briefly but if you overcorrect you will slam yourself into the rear of the carrier. The other guild is to use your ears. You will be able to tell when you are starting to get too fast or too slow by the change in sound. -
Well it is a feature of the real Tomcat and my understanding was that in some situations the pilot would be dependent on the RIO for ejection as the forces in some departures would prevent the pilot reaching the ejection handles.

Intermediate Experienced DCS User w a few MORE F-14 Questions
Cytarabine replied to redmantab's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Far from any expertise here so this is an in my opinion but it depends on the scenario. If facing off against a more manoeuvrable opponent than yes, get the shot off, force them to evade your missile while you clear out and reposition for another attack or bug out. If you are confident you can take them on then dogfight to gain optimal firing position (6 o'clock) and let the missile off the rail. Once you commit to a dogfight thought likely only one of you is going home so commit to win that fight which includes dropping your tanks. -
Intermediate Experienced DCS User w a few MORE F-14 Questions
Cytarabine replied to redmantab's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
You should... how long are your dogfights lasting that you are running out of fuel in a Tomcat at that range? Even in a Hornet you should still have fuel to spare and she doesn't have anywhere near the legs of a Tomcat. -
A Mirage 2000-5 would be an absolute dream.

Not sure if I am doing something wrong but when flying this mission I can't get the JTAC to designate, they go through all the usual preamble but there is no option to designate though I can clearly see the targets marked by smoke. Any ideas??

Raven One: upcoming DLC campaign for F/A-18 Hornet
Cytarabine replied to baltic_dragon's topic in Missions and Campaigns
Like it, as frustrating as AA refuelling can be in DCS it is just such an integral part that it has to be there. Was listening to an interview with an F-105 wild weasel pilot and they would refuel pretty much straight after take off and then several times between Thailand and North Vietnam and back. Looking forward to it! -
Given the JSOW is designed to attack air defence sites at stand off ranges it may be difficult to intercept, probably the true data is classified.
-
As they are simulating USN/USMC F/A-18C's and the Navy opted for the SLAM-ER over the JASSM I doubt we will see it. They certainly can be used by legacy Hornets (both the RAAF and the Finnish use them from legacy Hornets) but like some other overseas specific weapons (like the ASRAAM on RAAF F-18's) we probably won't see it. They are used from USAF F-16's and F-15E's so perhaps on those aircraft we will see it.

And being able to release from 130km away at altitude should give a nice complement to HARMs in the SEAD role against some of the tougher nuts to crack like the SA-10. Even at low altitude the range is about 20km. All assuming this is how they model it in DCS. Getting some real stand off capability to the F/A-18 should greatly improve its survivability. (At least until the SA-5 hits and approaching that range at altitude becomes hazardous again... then we need the SLAM-ER).

[WIP] Jester is just not doing his job in air to ait engagements
Cytarabine replied to BlueAngel's topic in Bugs and Problems
Yep this is a real problem. Some tasks Jester is very good at (hooking targets for example) but once you get close enough that elevation matters he just goes to pieces. Particularly when you compare it to in the F-18 where can quite confidently keep targets locked up. I find there is a 20nm gap between where Jester is effective and where the pilot lock on modes start. -
** F-14 Update! - F-14 Pilot Testing Session / Trip Report! **
Cytarabine replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Nice work guys! The commitment you are giving the Tomcat is fantastic and makes me very happy to have purchased the Tomcat. Keep it up! -
I think this is largely because bypass is an emergency mode (i.e. used when there has been a failure of normal countermeasure methods). Of course we use it probably a lot more than what it is intended because for quick flights I often can't be stuffed redefining my countermeasures programs (though for longer full missions I do). Now if only we had a data card that we could load these things into....
-
Also the autopilot is multiple different things; BAR - hold barometric altitude RAD - hold radar altitude CRS - hold selected course (which you select with the course select lever just above the bottom MFD) ATT - hold current attitude There is no 'follow waypoints' autopilot or anything like that. Might also be worth setting a small deadzone for your axes on your stick, as it might be just enough to stop the autopilot engaging.
-
Use something other than an AGM-88. These are big and not exactly particularly mobile targets (thinking JSOW or SLAM-ER).
-
Well that is not uniquely red force. Would be great if the AWE&Cs was more than just the AWE portion and included the C aspect. All of this adds to the need for Electronic Warfare aircraft (you want to hear from GCI... sorry!) :smartass:
-
Are you trimming the aircraft? You need to assign an axis to this (a hat switch will do just fine) and trim your bird out.
