  1. Thanks Guys <Wags> I have had similar issues with RAID pre-install drivers (they never work and who has floppies now anyways?). With a SSD, you will probably need to update the SSD firmware (needed for TRIM support as well). <konovalov> Its a new build all right, but right now, I am slightly put off by the low write speeds of this SSD. Phenomenal read though. An OS drive, though is all about read speeds once installed so it may be ideal. 40gb though.....Seems....small. I am not paying >£100 for an SSD though. Paid £240 for a 20mb Amiga drive back in the day, but not now. To be honest, all the talk of "20 second boot times" seems irrelevant when my BIOS farts about for more than that finding the RAID array. FC loads quick on my RAID1 setup. ARMAII would run really well on an SSD due to its massive I/O bottleneck, SH5? well, that a dog of an engine anyhow ATM. A few patches might whip it onto shape as they have for ARMAII <Joey> I have been playing the waiting game but what with Apple, Google and MS buying NAND flash memory like it was going out of fashion, prices will remain high for the foreseeable future IMO. in fact, if the iPad takes off, they will go up. I was caught out with DDR3 on my new build. In March my RAM was £100. I paid £160 last month. sometimes waiting too long is the wrong thing to do, especially in a recession.
  2. Guys I have been chin-stroking about whether to take the plunge into the brave new world of SSD’s for a while now but have been put off by the cost. This however, is £93. http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3773/ Its only 40gb and the write speeds are less than my HD, but the read speeds……… As an OS disk + apps there would be room on there for, say, a couple, “games of the month”, which would then be relegated to the HD to make space. As an OS drive which is all about read vs. write it makes total sense. FC and BS would also benefit as once installed, there are almost no writes really, (presumably). Has anyone gone SSD yet and what are your thoughts & experiences? Its payday……….and my wallet is trembling……only £93……..
  3. Most discrete soundcards workloads nowadays, (since the DX changes in Vista), are in post processing, (x-fi crystalliser, etc). So, no, you don’t need one, but yes, you may get better sound output with one. That all depends on your setup though. Feeble speakers will give feeble sound no matter what hardware you throw at them. With DCS & FC being flight sims though, (and this is not a criticism), sound quality is not top of the agenda as most are drowned out by the engines. If it was an orchestra simulator…….. Talking about software / hardware sound rendering is mostly moot nowadays anyway with the advent of multicore CPU & aware OS (Vista & 7). You are simply not going to saturate a C2D upward class CPU with software sound rendering. The benefits in the case of CPU cycles was old-school, (I remember thinking “wow” when adding a creative SoundBlaster to my AMD K62).
  4. Shhhh. Its a sercret!! The first rule of, "I have a FSX profile for my Cougar club is.........." :music_whistling: The next time I am off work with the Flu (July 25th sometime probably), I will sit down and create one from scratch. After all, its FSX. There are no weapons systems to worry about, just a..........massively complex comms & engine management system to map. As Unlucky Alf used to say.. "oh bugger"
  5. But the actual forums? Been down for months.
  6. That old chesnut. Cheers 104th but whichever numpty uploaded that file used their desktop shortcuts, not the ACTUAL files. Putting my FSX+expansions on eBay in a huff
  7. A-10 will be awesome. I have been re-reading "Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War " to get me in the mindset of proper OP's. But yeah, after THAT. A fast jet sim!!!! (DCS: Something Quick] IF they don't then we should all go over to Moscow with our AMIGAS!!!! (although I imagine easyjet might charge us for baggage with all those CRT's)
  8. [sarcasm] Let’s delay the release of FC2.0 & DCS: A-10 until the devs can take advantage of DX11. It should take about 2-3 years to rewrite the engine from scratch. Then another 6-9 months to get the actual game scripts working. In that time, as we will have no new flight sims to play on, I will come round your house with my Commodore Amiga, CRT monitor and a null modem cable. We can play Falcon 3.0 multiplayer. By that time DX13.1 will be out. [/sarcasm]
  9. Its the "deluxe". Comes with Airfix models of all the Flyables in the game, (only the Su-25 and Su-25T have all the parts though). Also includes a scale model of the theatre of operations made from fuzzy-felt, (none machine washable).
  10. FC2.0 Box art Must include a decent sized manual after all. :megalol:
  11. Heh. We should have a, "familiarisation", league table. The first person to crash in a ball of flame after firing up FC2.0 for the first time. Could be a reworked SAM, or a tweaked flight model, a new tough campaign mission, distracting eye candy......anything. If we take a mayfly's life expectancy of 30 minutes, for arguments sake, as a unit of measure, then post our "first spectacular / inglorious death" times. I would estimate 1.25mfL, for myself. (or we could just use minutes: seconds for sanity's sake).:smartass: ps. no setting autopilot over friendly territory and going off for a cup of tea!
  12. Well, I'm busy over clocking my shiny new i7 930. LOMAC ate CPU cycles so, as they say, "have some!" Having fun with ARMAII now its patched and playable. SH5 is a grower but just takes too long to play really. An hour trailing a convoy is very immersive and all that but who has that time?
  13. To prepare myself in body and mind for the forthcoming release of FC2.0, I am giving up flight sims as a sort of LOMAC-lent. From now on until the release of FC2.0 I will not; · Throw my beloved A-10 around the sky ignoring all warning tones · Curse the overheating laser in the SU-25T · Mutter about "notching" in the "tennis court" · Get my ABRIS in a twist in Black shark · Get nostalgic playing Allied Force · Not even Fart about in FSX thinking, "if only I had some bombs..." Instead, I will be in flight-detox, tooling along somewhere off the English coast now that Silent Hunter 5 has enough mods & patches to make it playable. If you should be sailing on a quiet day somewhere off Norfolk, you may think that you can hear distant muttering from under the water. If you put your ear to the water, you might even hear the muffled phrase, "where's the f****ng torpedo spread angle button gone??" Don't worry, you are in no danger. I couldn't sink a brick. So, the question is, WHAT ARE YOU GIVING UP FOR FC2.0 ?
  14. Just spotted aircraft data on the Dev journal http://lockon.co.uk/index.php?end_pos=574&scr=default nice!
  15. Can I second the request for aircraft performance data, (in the revised manual hopefully)? Ideal takeoff, landing speeds, corner speeds, etc. Will keep us propeller heads happy. New site is vast improvement. Training vids are very good. Really looking forward to FC2.0! :pilotfly: [now all I need is a release date so I can plan a weekend long girlfriend trip away at her parents]
  16. They are teasing us boys & girls :megalol:
  17. This old sound bug is due to directx implementation in windows Vista onwards. Specific creative card fix is to download "alchemy" app from creative. Oh, and is anyone else becoming tired of hearing the "$30? How dare they" posts? They have replaced the "$15? How dare they?" posts, which themselves evolved from the "FC2.0? How dare they", which came from the primordial soup of plain and simple "publish software we enjoy? How dare they". We get that a few people are upset by everyday occurrences, (which most of us deal with on a day to day basis without wiping spittle off our chins), like the economy, deadlines, inflation, shifting timescales, having to actually pay people to work for you, adding features and content and having the affront to charge for such things, but to quote the wise Homer J. Simpson; “Money can be exchanged for goods and services”. To wit, if you don’t want to pay then please leave the queue. You are getting good value here. :D
  18. You are in that slightly awkward position of outgrowing the arcade game and being scared sh**less by the sim. Been there. Save yourself some stress by heading over here and following this guys brilliant tutorial http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185/Tutorial_How_to_take_off_and_b.html#Post2626185 That is what got me in the air quickly and with the minimum of info overload. Who wants so to spend 1/2 an hour fondling switches when you just want to BLOW SOMETHING UP!! The switch fondling comes later :joystick: ps. The trimmer can be weird at first if you are used to plane sims. Theres a good video in the 1st link i sent you about trimming the KA-50.
  19. The training vids are not for the "arcade" mode of the game. There is a pdf included with the game with instructions for this mode. Also look on the DCS website under the videos section. There is a demo there. http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?end_pos=133&scr=products&lang=en Have a blast with this mode before gently dipping your toes in the simulation mode, (you can progressively turn bits on and off to help you through the transition). Good luck.
  20. I keep some frozen sausages taped to my laser rangefinder. Gives me an extra 60-90 seconds laser time. Also provides a nice fried snack after a CAS engagement. PS. ED, can you please delay the release of FC2.0 as I still haven’t got the hang of the SU-25T yet. Thanks.
  21. I find it quite hard to believe what some people believe to be unbelievable. In these times when belief can change at an unbelievable rate we need to hold onto what we believe in.
  22. mmmmmm red pens. With enough red pens i can CORRECT THE WORLD!
  23. An early .pdf manual release as a sort of free pr / advance marketing / teaser offering?....... ...now that’s interesting, and it would give us guys in the queue something constructive to actually do whilst we wait instead of jostling each other. [And keep us quiet for a couple of days]. I’ll bet ED are thinking, “oh god, if we give them the manual early, they will start all the……. “ Dear Mr & Mrs Eagle Dynamics It’s outrageous that [insert allegedly must-have feature here] hasn’t been included in FC2.0. I intend to promptly blow myself and my cat up. Yours Outraged Middle England ” …emails. Maybe if they released the manual with STFU clause?:book:
  24. Meh. Carping about spending a few ££ on something that will most likely keep you entertained for years to come is pointless and counterproductive. Basically, and I don’t want to sound condescending here, it is a buyer’s market, so, if you don’t want to buy the product at the price offered, then don’t. ED will soon know whether their small price hike has had a detrimental effect on sales pretty quickly. IMO $30 is a tiny price to pay for this sim as I have come back to LOMAC again and again over the years since its release. There are no other games so old on my HD. Period. To me, that speaks volumes as I have spent £100’s over the years on games that have gone on eBay within a week, (and I am looking at Silent Hunter V speculatively right now). The consensus on these forums is overwhelmingly positive but money talks. We will see when FC2.0 is launched. Personally, I will not hesitate. As McDaniel pointed out, how many other sims are imminent? Count them. How many fingers are you holding up?:harhar:
  25. Sorry, but I disagree. In an ideal world, the English translation would be perfect. And the Spanish, and the German, and the French, and the Italian, and.......... However, if you EVER want to see anything new released then you simply have to accept that ED must use their available resources as best they can and prioritise man hours accordingly. Releasing a stable product is their priority as that will start recouping their already over budget development costs, (see Wags post on the price increase). This is perfectly understandable as they have wages to pay. Crossing every "T" and dotting every "I" is simply not a priority and is something that a tiny patch could fix down the line. I suggest you play Silent Hunter 5 for a while to see what happens when developers have these decisions taken away from them and are forced to release games early. Buggy, poor documentation, incomplete AND with bad translations. As a native English speaker and a former teacher, part of me twitches, (and I long for a red pen), every time I see an incorrect grammatical or punctuation error, however, if I stopped and pointed out these errors to everyone I met I would pretty quickly end up with no one to speak with. In any case, it's the little differences in life that make it interesting. Now that's bad English.:smartass:
