Apologies for those of you, who are happy with XP and are sick of hearing of us “transients” who have moved to Win 7, but most transitional issues can be worked around, (blows raspberry in the general direction of Windows XP). This repeats a lot of the great info on this forum and others I know, but it may help some newbie’s to get up and running quicker as my patience has worn thin a few times. It seems like EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM EVER reported on this forum has happened to me and I have learned a lot from fighting my way through. None of these discoveries are mine, but after several months where LOMAC sat gathering dust in disgrace on my shelf, this is how I got it working properly…. [**EDIT** the gfx control panel settings below assume an NVIDIA card. This is simply because thats what i have...until my 5870 turns up.. amazon.co.uk are you listening?? ;)] [**EDIT** i had to post the table as an image, and it may be hard to read. Does anyone know an easy way of embedding the table in the post? i may try to add as a link.] [links pasted here as they are embedded in image above as i couldnt get the table to render in the post] http://www.dutch-flankers.nl/wiki/index.php?title=Installing_Flaming_Cliffs_on_Windows_7 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=34335&highlight=graphics.cfg http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=50225 Notes *BS does this where cockpit sounds are loud as if the door was open. You F2 outside view then F1 back in again and the problem goes away. This is similar to LOMAC but that fix doesn’t work here, as it’s a vista\7 direct sound deprecation problem. ** This stumped a lot of people including me, twice. Follow this link. Do not deviate, do not blink. Do it from scratch, (clear previous install dirs, etc), and if should work. ***This is the final minor glitch I can’t seem to shake. I have a 3.6ghz box with 4gb or ram and a 1gb GFX card. LOMAC is traditionally CPU bound but this looks like a data throughput glitch. I will run perfmon & process explorer and monitor the lockon.exe process to diagnose. Setting core affinity helps, and I am aware of the various x64 related posts and just hope FC2 doesn’t do this otherwise I might start on Prozac or start playing FC with whale song in the background. The subject of MODS for newbies Go to lockonfiles.com and get MODMAN 7.1 (backup your lockon folder in case things go titsup****) After reading vipers thread, (http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=49980), where I thought “how come his LOMAC makes mine look like its running on an AMIGA? “, he very kindly showed me the mods he uses, (in that thread), I was gobsmacked, so I started experimenting. Now LOMAC looks better than ever and runs very nicely. (I don’t have that many mods as my install started to creak a little so I cherry picked the nicest. PM me for my list) ****technical term Conclusion A palaver? sure, but remember, you are getting a 7 year old game to work on hardware & OS software that wasn’t even conceived back then. You are also learning a lot about the hows and whys of Windows which should stand you in good stead in the future. Now apart from the alt-tab minor annoyance, FC works like a charm and looks wonderful on win 7 x64, in proper widescreen! Happy shooting!:pilotfly:

this months "pc pilot" mag has a favourable review of a proper trackir alternative. about £30-£40 cheaper. cant remember the name off the top of my head. -

A lot depends on preference when it comes to particular flavours of joysticks / pedals. You will hear all sorts of “get this” and “don’t get that”. it’s all very subjective to your preference and your wallet. I went from a saitek evo àevo force à hotas cougar and there are strengths / weaknesses with them all but am happy From my experience, the things that made the most difference to me were (in descending order) Track IR – OMG that really adds to the experience. I would never go back and would rather play minesweeper than a flightsim without trackir now Proper HOTAS – Total control. Sing the top gun theme tune. Say no more:pilotfly: Rudder pedals – a subtle but immensely immersive addition. I had a twist stick rudder for yonks but the difference is simple. More control. More accuracy. More kills (and better landings). As 'dark eagle' has done, i repurposed my G25 racing pedals and they work fine. Monitors – no need for fancy multiple monitor setups. They are fiddly to set up in BS and expensive. Mind you, if you have a spare LCD lying around, the ABRIS / SHKVAL works nicely on it and can increase your situational awareness. a bit. Desk – Meh. a desk is a desk unless you want to go down the whole pit building route. Good luck with your ‘significant other’ in that department -
MISSILE--SLIDER...A thing of the PAST!!!
coolts replied to cool_t's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
when moving the slider i found the "my missile miss bus, my missile miss train, my missile miss truck, my missile miss plane"-game mode good for pacifists but not taxpayers. ($50,000 for a maverick to go "poof" in a shrubbery) -
hopefully the FC2.0 ones will have voiceovers.

GAH! 5 weeks delivery from Canada apparantly! Must be strapped to a passing cod. -
I had similar "lockon.exe stopped responding" crashes in win7 x64 till I ran the game in vista sp1 compatibility mode. Stopped the crashes.....so far. rt click .exe Properties Compatibility Run in compatibility for…”vista sp1” as 1.12b was pushed out to make FC work on vista, this is the least flaky compatibility mode for win 7 x64 that I have experienced you've killed UAC right? i had a nightmare fannying around till i followed this http://www.dutch-flankers.nl/wiki/index.php?title=Installing_Flaming_Cliffs_on_Windows_7 from scratch. then all i had to do was the compatability fix.

Whoa! Viper, you had the paint burnt off your nose there by that missile. I guess that would be a valid combat procedure, (cannons vs strela), if you were in a michael bay movie.

I know but the key point is that you 'could' have fired first because you locked at 3mn, whereas he didn’t fire till you were at 1.8mn-ish. That gave you 1.2mn to have a fag /wagon wheel before he was a threat to you. On A-10 campaign mission 2 when I am ground stabilized to road next to approaching Strelas, I get a lock at the exact same time they fire no matter how much I nudge the designator over the target. At first I thought I was holding the designator near some high contrast shrubbery, but I have tried on the road itself. Same thing. I will try your setup, “A runway, a Strela and me”, later in the week.

"early 2010" could mean up till June the 29th. June the 30th could be classed as "mid 2010" then anything after that, "late 2010". unless FC 2.0 hasnt launched by then in which case, "mid 2010" could be pushed back till the day before new years eve. Funny old world
-
Viper I played that track you sent of you bearing down on a lone Strela on a runway. You get good optical lock at around 3mn, whereas the Strela doesn’t launch at you till you are at 1.8mn, (at work so can’t remember the exact figures). You therefore can launch first and be extending away spewing flares before he launches. Are you fighting against units from the ‘Stevie Wonder’ regiment? J I get nailed at 3mn when I use optical Mavs. My Strelas are on red bull compared to that guy! I now use IR mavs against AA threats, (to save my sanity). No matter how much red bull they drink they can’t beat a 6mn lock!
-
Or just use ir mavs, get lock earlier, launch furthur and rtb with clean trousers? I hear what you say viper but that seems a little 'square peg round hole' when an ir mav is so superior. I may however be being a wuss! Once back to my rig I will experiment.
-
max range on the optically guided maverick is the same range at which the strela launches at me. I see the flash if the sam launch in the mfd as I get a contrast lock. Wingman useless at sead. He drops ordnance as soon as he is shot at.

Guys Back in mud moving mode. A-10 campaign mission #2. Max cloud ceiling 5,000 so no 'high and dry' diving from 15,000ft tactics to avoid shilkas and strelas. Aforementioned threats and sloping terrain make cold war fulda gap 'down in the weeds' tactics suicidal. So, a compromise. Employing mavericks at maximum standoff, as there is no air threat, I can motor at 5000. The issue is in my attempts at aqquiring using the optical 'k' model maverick. With it's feeble 3x zoom I can get a lock but only at the same time the strela launches. It's like a game of chicken and far too dangerous to be the correct methodology. No problem with the 'd' model with it's IR seeker and 6x zoom. I can pick the threats off at safe standoff. So the question is....... Are optical mavericks just for none AA equiped targets like tanks and apc's. Preserve IR mavericks for the strelas and shilkas?

Gah! Missed all the fun. Bloody Masterchef!! Seriously though, how dare ED make a game, (in 2003), that still pushes modern PC's. The very cheek!

Thrustmaster Cougar questions
coolts replied to ScEBlack1's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Stays put like heavy metal things stay put. Performs well IMO but i havent had an X52, (only a Cyborg, then a Cyborg EVO). The software is not as simple as run of the mill plug and play, but is very flexible. The hog could be good but all we have seen are tiny glimpses and no pricing or release dates so far. -
that sorted it. cheers. it was the missile effectiveness slider i think. couldnt find the .cfg or .lua file so just reset to defaults in game. btw my "view angle min" are differnet to yours CameraAngleLimits = {} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iSu_27] = {160.0, -76.0, 145.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iSu_33] = {160.0, -79.0, 145.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iSu_25] = {109.0, -70.0, 104.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iSu_39] = {116.0, -85.0, 145.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iMiG_29] = {160.0, -80.0, 145.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iMiG_29K] = {140.0, -65.0, 145.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iA_10] = {160.0, -72.0, 145.0} CameraAngleLimits[PlaneIndex.iF_15] = {160.0, -81.0, 145.0} any idea why?

Guys I changed my graphics.cfg file to “1.6” FOV and that works okay. I avoid the settings page now so it won’t reset. I tried an f-15 mission. Fine. Better SA. Like it I tried a few a-10 missions. And every single maverick I fired missed. By the same margin, below and to the right, (i think). Do you think the forced FOV change has somehow messed up the HUD alignment? As mavs are targeted using an essentially auto-locking visual means, this may have been borked by changing FOV. I will revert and test. I swear I saw a little mod on lockonfiles to tweak the targeting pipper but ignored it, (and can’t remember the name now). It could be another mod messing with stuff. Without mavericks, the A-10 is just a tour bus!:noexpression:

hang on. if i have a crap pc and i want to run a game at max settings.....maybe if i rant about it, magical elves will appear and make it work. or. turn some sliders down and. stop insulting people who try to help

F-15 campaign mission 2 (Fulcrums flown by Tron!!)
coolts replied to coolts's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
cheers brit. i know that. it just feels like cheating somehow. daft i know. -
CGTharos is quite right. Read the excellent, “Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War”. Once deployed to Iraq, the pilots soon abandoned their “down in the weeds” training tactics for medium altitude sorties only going in with guns once out of mavericks and once they were sure AA threats were taken out. The low approach seems to have been advocated for radar avoidance of the perceived threat from the Iraqi air force which didn’t really materialise.

coolts replied to coolts's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
It bloody worked. Getting below them. The 29's can still dodge your missiles like they are stoned bumblebees chasing Usain Bolt, but they cant dodge 3 OF THEM!! .....[and my campaign wont save....after all that...back to 1st mission...delete saved states....this game is a PATIENCE SIMULATOR].....
