Yes - stay clear of the third party. I am thinking if these Gen 2's are ok we will see things return to normal on sales in a few weeks. I found out when I return mine to Best Buy I can even get my birthday discount code reactivated so I can use it again on the final one. Update: The HP QC guy doesn't get too involved with sales although he did say in response to someone else (in Australia) on Reddit that here forward globally the new shipments should be updated ones. Voodooimaxx 1 hour ago We should be! The fixes are across Standard and Pro. :)
-
The HP QC guy on Reddit only mentioned the thermal and flickering issues as fixed. He really didn't go into the entire list.
-
I asked that question to HP and on Reddit but don't have an answer yet.
-
Yep - was that direct from HP then? I still want to go through Best Buy for all of the benefits I have there.

Looks like Amazon is back shipping the new Pros (but a higher price :( ). They cleared out the old listings and reviews. Right now they must be drop-shipping from HP and are not Prime. Best Buy is not but they were only selling the Standard ones. After having both I don't think the Pro is worth the extra $50 unless you plan on using a backpack computer and need the short cable since they now both have the same warranty. https://www.amazon.com/HP-Reverb-Virtual-Reality-Headset/dp/B07WCX76C7/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=hp+reverb&qid=1565799510&s=gateway&sr=8-4

The ones from HP USA, Amazon, and Best Buy here in the US should be "fixed" ones once they start shipping again on 8/21/2019. I would be nervous about old returns being reshipped from some of the other places. We are in the limbo period for a while until all of the baddies are cleared out of the pipeline. Hopefully, the new ones are all goodies. :) Voodooimaxx on Reddit (Reverb QC Manager at HP USA) has taken a beating on these Reverb's. I have chatted with him quite a bit although he isn't my official tech support contact at HP on the Reverb and he just supervises the final testers. As I mentioned an engineering group in Houston figured out the actual technical problems. Hopefully, this poor product introduction is behind them. For DCS they are the best bet in town and lucky for them Acer didn't release the Ojo ConceptD headset on the consumer side although they have on the commercial side.

These babies are selling on the HP Store now.... My tech guy did say mid August. Looks like we have a Gen 2 ship date. I hope they stick to it. 8/21/2019 That is great since my Reverb return date is 8/27/2019. I may not have a gap. I don't see any changes in their pictures (yet? I would think they would like to keep them looking the same) https://store.hp.com/app/pdp/hp-reverb-virtual-reality-headset-professional-edition

The trouble has been that many develop issues only after several to many hours of use and they heat and cool for many cycles. My first Reverb was perfect until over 20 hours. :smilewink: These things are all manufactured in China but the debugging and fixing is occurring at HP in Houston, TX. I bet there have been some long winded conference calls between the two. :( The HP tech rep I emailed last week is on vacation. Hopefully, not permanently. lol

Beware the new Windows update.
Secoda replied to Tinkickef's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I learned my lesson and clone my C drive (M.2 NVMe 1 TB) and D drive 1 TB SSD to two HD's after updates once things stabilized. The trouble with Microsoft is a fix can take a month or more as we found in the 1903 mishap. -
It depends on your MB but I just picked up an Inland 1 TB M.2 NVMe drive on sale for $99 USD. I was coming from a 1 TB Samsung EVO 860 SSD and the M.2 NVMe is a LOT faster (read speed is about 6X faster Read Speed 3,100 MBps - one can get even faster ones (up to 5,000 MBps) but they are more expensive) than the SSD. Windows boots in less than 10 seconds. Yes Windows and DCS are both on that new drive. The SSD is now used for data like videos, pictures, other games where speed doesn't matter, etc..

That is weird. The one I had still says 35 months remaining on warranty as I just logged on to HP Support. I wonder who has it now.

I have found returns to be: Best Buy best (for me as an elite plus member 45 days on returns) Amazon and HP both good and about the same I would not worry about any of them. Free shipping labels and prompt credits.

I think I got the first Reverb in the US being used for DCS and the worm was a bit sick back then but it was love at first sight. :P
-
It doesn't but it is a Gen 1. I have a 45 day full refund period at Best Buy here and discounts if I buy another so I will stay with Best Buy. I realize most folks are scrambling just to get one but I want to end up with a Gen 2. :smilewink:

I am waiting to see what the HP tech support guy (my official contact from the first one) says on Monday about the Gen 2's and still have a few weeks to return it to Best Buy (by Aug. 27th). The HP guy brought up the Gen 2's to me. He also mentioned an eye flickering problem they discovered described by customers in returns that was not cable or power related. It was caused from heating up on the main board itself in the headset. I have no idea how pervasive that is. He made it sound like it was a lucky catch. I will ask him about the USB power issue. My ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E has not had problem with powering the Reverb as far as I can tell. I spoke to the Geek Squad guy I know at Best Buy and I can return it and get a new one at the same discounted price I got the first one at although I might have to wait for it. I am already in their system for getting notified on another one. Maybe the third one is the charm. :) (if there was no Gen 2 than I might keep this one but he mentioned one with all of the fixes in it)
-
Were you having flickering at one time?
-
The clips were being shipped for the Gen 1's. The Shopblt orders delayed until later in August could be Gen 2's. Curious to see if they make those dates (8/19 and 8/23).
-
I asked the HP Omen support guy for the Reverb what the latest status is on the Gen 2's last night by email but he is off on Friday's. Hopefully, I see a response on Monday. I suspect they will be testing the heck out of them to avoid a repeat of the Gen 1's. The last time I spoke to him on the phone (maybe a week and a half ago) he said they were close so hopefully that means they have been testing them. I suspect the release will be based on some big wig's approval and not any given date. The last time I spoke to him they seemed well aware of the issues outside of the cable/connector including flickering after heating up, etc..

My second Reverb is only a bit warmer (on the front of the top) than the first one but only a little and it doesn't need a fan or anything, and sweating or fogging isn't an issue as it is cool where your eyes are. That is strange where a few of them heat up much more noticeably. I have 19 days left to return this 2nd one to Best Buy (to guarantee getting a Gen 2). Amazon and Best Buy still have them listed as unavailable but are maintaining the listings. Has anyone heard any updates on shipments of the the Gen 2 Reverb's? I will email the HP Omen support guy to see what he can tell me. Not a peep from Acer on a consumer version of theirs.

I have a light on right above my head. What I have found in testing with two other guys in my squadron also with Reverb's is while tracking seems fine in pitch dark for side-to-side and up-and-down head movement (I think it uses infrared emitters for this) - leaning forward (to the cockpit panel) and backward doesn't work without good lighting. :smilewink: Are you current on all software updates? I have not had that sound and cockpit sideways slide for a long time. I hate that because it makes me ill. lol

67 mm is about the upper limit IMO on the Reverb. You might see a slightly degraded display but it should still be usable. The only way to know for sure is to try it. I think your rig will work.
-
I tested both side by side for quite a bit in DCS. If you have the Reverb properly setup which was pretty difficult than the Reverb is much clearer hands down. You just can't beat the physics on the native pixels with filters. The difference in spotting distant targets is huge. Reverb is the hands down winner in clarity over the Index. They aren't even that close by the numbers or perception IMO. (if they seem close something is a afoot and we have seen that again and again) Before the latest updates and 1903 fix I would agree that WMR/SteamVR were a lot more of a pain to get setup properly. It is still a pain but improving. The Reverb display smoothness (elimination of jutter/stutter) has improved tremendously in the last month as has the removal of shimmer from updates and not settings changes. The head tracking on the Reverb is excellent in a lighted space. The WMR controllers leave a lot to be desired if you are using them which most are not for DCS. The controller tracking has it's well known limitations as well. As was said if you are using the Reverb for DCS only it rocks. I could not tell any difference going above 90 Hz in DCS with the Index and other reviewers have said the same. Maybe it makes more of a difference in other games or to other individuals? I will agree on these points: - The Reverb cable has to be setup/positioned so it doesn't tug although I find it more than long enough for a sit down sim. - My IPD is 64 mm so the adjustment is a non-issue but it may be for some. The Reverb isn't for everybody. IPD and uses other than a sit down sim may make the Index a better choice. - HP has yet to release a reliable Reverb. Valve has had it's problems with the Index (display) and the controllers as well (more important for other games). - If clarity is king (which it is for me in a military flight sim) the Index is a good notch down the ladder from the Reverb.
-
A mix of a real issue and not being setup properly. I wonder if he pulled the plastic lens protectors off even (HP told me some were returned with the covers still on - LOL). Many were returned that were never setup properly. As was said clarity wise the Rift S isn't even close to the Reverb.
-
I suspect the beta code became the stable code.
-
I went back to the stable version myself. They really have refined the performance with some of these updates. Especially the smoothness. :smilewink:
