That would be nice but I am not holding my breath on that. I am more taking advantage of my Elite Plus status at Best Buy and treating a new product defect as an opportunity. I talked to a Geek Squad guy I know and he liked what I was doing. I put in a home theater in late winter 2019 and had spent a goodly sum at a Magnolia Best Buy (their home theater stores). I did some fancy discounting, returns, and swapping back then too. I saved a few grand. The markup on electronics is pretty crazy (like furniture) so I try never to pay full price unless the item is in very short supply and high demand like the Reverb is. $650 is high for a VR headset and controllers IMO. $1000 for an Index at 1600 x 1400 res is a bit as you say. With discounts, Rewards, and no interest payments over 12 months I figure the Reverb is just below about $500 now. $400 would be better. If it has some "issue" still Best Buy is much more able to discount it for a repair on a new item from my past experiences with them than HP is willing to do. I got a huge discount on a laptop from BB that way. I could not get HP to budge on anything. QUOTE=Naruto;3975646]I really hope you get a version two since it looks like BB must have just got these from HP.

But I bought another one immediately (just a change in terms of the sale). :D The Reverb is that good for DCS after I tried a Valve Index and Rift S. I would not buy one of them unless they were the only game in town. The old adage - you can't un-see it after you've seen it. ;-)

Which VR Headset Did You Own Or Are You Buying This Year?
Secoda replied to Secoda's topic in Virtual Reality
Are you doing the supersamping in SteamVR instead of DCS? (PD set to 1.0) For the F-18 in Free Flight Single player I see about 60 FPS near terrain and 90 FPS skyward (with the Reverb) with Motion Reprojection off. With it on DCS usually displays 45 FPS which is half of the actual rate using virtual frames every other frame. It really makes it smoother at moderate speeds next to to the ground. I do OC the heck out of the Strix RTX2080 card. -
What is wrong with this review? I think it is accurate. It is from a week ago and you cannot update reviews. I will post another one on the unit I receive on Saturday from Best Buy and mention the first one went back to HP because it ran out of refund days with no ETA for the fix but only after I have used it for a few weeks and at least twenty hours if it works. It took a while for a problem to show up on the first one. This review is dead on IMO. There is a lot of pent up demand for the Reverb. I ordered it within fifteen minutes of receiving the Best Buy email. I am considering it a free 45 day loaner until it proves otherwise. On the Best Buy page it says that people "People ultimately bought" a Rift S (with the Reverb Sold Out). https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-reverb-virtual-reality-headset-for-compatible-windows-pcs/6346254.p?skuId=6346254 4/5 stars Great But Some Early Flaws To Fix Posted 1 week ago. I purchased the HP Reverb Pro directly from HP and received it on 6/10. One of the lucky few. Nothing currently touches it for resolution and clarity. Not the Pimax 5K or Valve Index Or Hive Pro. SDE is basically gone with the Reverb. IMO if you are using this for a sit down sim (I use it for DCS World where clarity is king) this is currently the best headset available or coming out at the moment. (Things change quickly in the VR space) The big positives are clarity/high resolution and light weight. It works well with glasses and some of the others don't (tight on sides or glasses hit lenses requiring adjusting). The negatives are the heavy cable and the first batch is having some issues (flickering/screen blacking) that HP is working through which is why they were delayed. It does not have a physical adjustable IPD so if your IPD is far out of the "normal" range that might be an issue. It uses inside tracking which may or may not work well for your application (I prefer it over external bases for tracking). Great for sit-down sims but not as good for stand-up games where motion is involved. The controllers are the standard WMR units which are not as good as some of the others. I don't use them at all for DCS. The colors are decent for LCD lenses but not as great as OLED if that is important to you. The blacks aren't bad.

I just got notified that Best Buy has the consumer version is stock and is shipping. Delivery this Saturday July 13th to me. It's listed at 599.99 but I can get it for 539.99 because it's my birthday month (10% off). Also, I am an Elite Plus Best Buy member so I have a 45 day no question return policy and 12 month interest free payment plus I get some additional Best Buy Rewards as an Elite Plus member. I just ordered it for Saturday delivery. Is that funny or what? Now I will have one that hopefully works most of the time through nearly the end of August. Lets see what happens then. The negative is it is only a one year warranty. I saved about $100 over the Pro cost direct to HP without the discount only I didn't pay out a penny. Best Buy Ship to Home Items Thanks for your order on 07/10/19 HP - Reverb Virtual Reality Headset for Compatible Windows PCs Model: 5QB37AA#ABA Qty Price 1 $539.99 Sat 7/13

Anyone notice any difference in clarity with the Windows update on the Reverb? The guy with the Valve Index I tried who has an IPD of 69 mm (if I am remembering correctly but it was large) who tried my Reverb said the sweet spot was small for him too. We looked at the DCS main menu and picked spots where the clarity changed. The difference was huge between my 64 mm and his large IPD. I think how far the lenses sit from your eyes makes a difference as well as IPD. I am surprised they all don't at least have an IPD adjustment. I would say if you are more than 3 mm away from the headset setting I would look for an adjustable one. It will likely still work but have a small sweet spot and you may see the edges of the lenses, etc.. The Valve Index has both adjustments and is optimal in that regard. Too bad they didn't opt for 2160 x 2160. I suspect pricing was getting out of hand on the total kit. For DCS personally I prefer inside tracking and as long as I have plenty of light the Reverb was very smooth. It's more complex than just the IPD and lens distance to eyes. Some of the lenses are mounted at different angles I read. Basically, like a motorcycle helmet the only way you are going to know is to test it yourself. Try for under thirty days and return it if need be. The manufacturers/retailers should be up for that given this issue.

I was just talking to someone about the Reverb, Valve Index, and Rift S. 1600 x 1440 is never going to compete with 2160 x 2160 native resolution for clarity unless the Reverb doesn't work at all I guess. LOL It's real obvious and the difference is significant. They all have the same sub-pixels. I think the Valve Index does the best job with the SDE lines but they are hardly gone. When it come to spotting ground targets or planes at a distance or lights at night the difference is HUGE between the Reverb and the other two. That is where we are at the moment. If you play a lot of stand-up motion games then I would fork out for the Index even if it is worse in DCS if I don't play sims a lot. (I might have two headsets then - a 2160 x 2160 for DCS and a VI for motion games) The VI has better controllers and controller tracking and it is much better for games requiring movement IMO. The sacrifice is clarity. Clarity isn't as important in a lot of games like it is in DCS flying missions. If the Acer Ojo ConceptD 2160 x 2160 is as good on clarity as the Reverb and brings the IPD adjustment then it may even better for more DCS players IMO. My 2 cents after comparing each now.

I just bought an industrial high-temp enclosed 3D Printer for home and the Reverb refund pays for part of it.

I updated a prior post but most probably missed it. I spoke to Acer USA today before I decided for sure on the return/refund since I had three options with the Reverb. Update: I called Acer USA and got the commercial side Sales. They say the Ojo ConceptD VR is already released on the commercial side but not on the consumer side. In fact, the guy I spoke with on the commercial side first said he had demo'd it about two or three months ago. He gave me the consumer product sales side number which I called and they said there was no official release date set yet on the consumer side for the VR headset yet. I would like to try a Pimax 8K X when it comes out even though my hopes aren't high based on their other models. From What I read they did figure out how to keep the cable down to only one DisplayPort 1.4 cable and still deliver about 16M pixels but only at 75-80Hz. For a while they they were talking two cables to handle the data load. I think 80 Hz would work. Most of the folks testing the higher Hz on the Valve Index aren't noticing a lot of difference beyond 80-90 Hz like 120 Hz.
-
I just printed the return/refund label and will drop off at Fed Ex in a bit. September is my guess as well when V2 Reverb's might start shipping again unless they get hit with some new problem. Maybe Acer will release the new Ojo on the consumer side in the meantime. Acer is Taiwan vs China so I am slightly more optimistic about them. :D

So did you get a refund or a replacement when they get available? Since I purchased direct from HP my replacement would only be a version 2 they are saying. Some of the other retailers are still selling the first batch. I think it will be closer to two months than two weeks. I am doing the refund.

Has anyone heard any word on the WMR update to fix the resolution limiting bug from the 1903 update?
-
From the discussion on the podcast the improvements for a WMR 2.0 were at least more tracking cameras (like the Rift S) and better controllers. Has anyone heard any word on the WMR update to fix the resolution limiting bug from the 1903 update?

I just spoke to HP Support now maybe my fifth or sixth time. In addition to the cable errors most have seen and I have listed above they let me know that the SteamVR errors including the one I listed are software related (nothing to do with a Reverb problem) and there is an update from Steam coming soon targeting those. They include some PC freezing up and SteamVR errors affecting the monitor display as well (like a green screen or black screen but on the monitor). I read that the Vive Pro had nearly the very same problems when it first came out until SteamVR made some device specific updates for it. I wonder if the 60 Hz/90 Hz switching is also related because SteamVR is updating their device specific code for the Reverb. Basically, the device is still being tweaked. I guess the Microsoft update to WMR will come out soon as well hitting the high-res WMR headsets. Anyone else have a Reverb with the issues who is keeping it anyways? (still trying to make up my mind) I am leaning towards a full refund with the two month delay again and hooked up the Lenovo Explorer (1440 x 1440) a while ago. I did a Case I carrier landing in the F-18 and I can't even see the carrier with the SDE at the very beginning. It is pathetic next to the clear Reverb. For me the Ultra-clear sweet spot on the Reverb is maybe 85% of the entire FOV and what isn't very clear is not too bad. On the Lenovo I am estimating the sweet spot of the FOV at maybe 65% but it gets very unclear approaching the edges. In two months the Acer Ojo ConceptD could be released or a fixed Reverb will be available. The early Acer pictures actually make it appear to be well built or it could have as many "new" problems as the Reverb did. Maybe heavy? While Acer put release dates on most of their ConceptD products (June - September 2019) they left it off of the VR headset and the unit was a prototype only at CES driven by a smart phone. It could be quite a while. Update: I called Acer USA and got the commercial side Sales. They say the Ojo ConceptD VR is already released on the commercial side but not on the consumer side. In fact, the guy I spoke with said he demo'd it about two months ago. They gave me the consumer product sales side number which I called and they said there was no official release date set yet on the consumer side for the VR headset.

Which VR Headset Did You Own Or Are You Buying This Year?
Secoda replied to Secoda's topic in Virtual Reality
This poll tells me that most of the interest in new VR headsets for DCS is in the Rift S or Reverb. The Valve Index may have itself priced a bit high since many need the entire kit but it was also released late so time will tell. With the Reverb availability so low at the moment I wonder what it might of have been without issues and a better supply. I guess I am surprised that the interest in the Valve Index is so low. 88 folks at the moment own 126 headsets. I suspect the 38 own two and the rest one. Just a guess. -
Oh no - another update. lol I have my entire system cloned now so I can fall back.
-
SteamVR guesses what your configuration can handle and often guesses wrong. If I see it set to 60 Hz I usually end up rebooting (starting and stopping SteamVR doesn't do it as it seems to take a snapshot of your config as it boots) to get it on 90hz even though WMR is always set to 90 Hz. I can tell when it is in 60 Hz (its a bit funky and I turn on the DCS FPS. With reprojection it is at 30 instead of 45) and 90 is better. If you look at support for SteamVR on Steam it has a lot of problems on other headsets. It has a lot of updates and if I am in a DCS/VR session as an update comes in it has crashed because of the updating process (not the update itself). I was told it used to be a lot worse.

It auto-resizes for the display yet a high-res version is available if someone wants it.

Read my last posts. I had some time to test the long cable and identify the problems. I have it well isolated now and everything works well like that. It is not enough to zip tie the connector. I had to clamp it with two flat solid supports and a plastic clamp so that no movement is possible. Same with the USB plug at the PC. Just the weight of the cable messes it up as you suggest it must be supported. After trying the Valve Index the Reverb is the best option for DCS IMO now. The Acer Ojo ConceptD may change that by the end of the year since it has the IPD adjustment that some may need but is otherwise the same as the Reverb. It will likely have new product issues as well. They all did.
-
Doubtful but who knows. At the very least I bet they have tested that cable by now but it is the same bad build. The new ones certainly aren't available yet. They don't even have a firm ETA. I think mid-August is a guess they are giving the big retailers but probably realistic. HP - please test these new ones before you ship them. :music_whistling: With my "rigged" or "fixed" cable it booted and worked perfectly so far this morning. I highly doubt they tested that long cable originally. As far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with the headset itself. How do you like that Samsung QLED 4K 82" monitor? :)
-
Since the headset may be going back next week I spent some time testing the connector and the plugs this evening and can pretty well duplicate most of the problems mentioned and at least temporarily fix them too. They do all seem cable related but both the connector and the USB plug appear to be involved - not just one. By the time I was done I fixed everything and played for another hour w/o any issues. When I cause them I see all kinds of weird stuff: Flickering Blanking screen Freezing WMR error 14-1 Check Headset cable SteamVR error -203 Unexpected error Sound disconnecting from headset and going back to PC If I disconnect the connector and reconnect it in a certain position and lock it in place with a clamp it stops most of the errors. The drooping USB plug at the PC causes the sound issue. I can lift it up and stabilize it and then I don't see any errors. My headset runs cool and I can't get any errors messing with the cable going into the headset - only the connector to the rest of the long cable. What the HP guy told me seems to be correct. I need to test this more tomorrow to make sure no errors pop up but IMO they really messed up the QC on the cabling/connectors/plug. I think it is just cheaply made and it must not have been tested much - maybe a late arrival?

He may have had a spinal fusion (all of it) from some rough auto's in the past. :)

It's on HP Support (Contact Support). Register yourself and then your headset with the serial number by Adding A Device. It will show up under My Dashboard. https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp I don't think I gave away too many personal details. Just my name. lol
