The triggered action to display a picture to everyone, probably has some image scale options.

For the last little while DCS will do this to me if I try to launch it from within the oculus white matrix room. Launch from the desktop once the link is connected is fine. Might not be your problem but thought it was worth sharing.

CPU overclock - is it truely worth it for DCS?
Hoirtel replied to sirrah's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yeah ok, we can argee to agree? or maybe disagree... If a chip's internal structure is degraded enough it will not perform the same way. This can take a long time or a short time, more liely a very long time. Many many variables. The idea that chips are 100% fine working as new or they completely fail isn't correct. You are of course correct about proper cooling, but why is cooling important? why do CPU's thermal throttle? Its not to prevent complete outright failure but its to avoid the heat degrading the chip which will then reduce its performance. Just google "CPU heat degradation". This is also the first segment of buildzoids video. I think you only need to watch 20mins for this to be reasonably well explained. "don't take your overclocks too far, there is very, very little danger of a CPU failure occurring" - I agree but as overclocks go further the go from safe, to degrading to, then outright failure if you go high enough. The latter is unlikely and requires some fairly silly inputs. The real danger is the degradation zone. Maybe we are discussing the same point, anyhow this is a bit of a thread highjack. Apologies. In short to the OP, it can be worth OC'ing really depends. Be careful. -

Yeah its all pretty subjective at this point. I didn't like it either, but most seem to. It is better than the tiny holes on the Q2! -

This is kind of contradictory to your "bad hygiene" line so not sure what this bad hygiene refers to. A poor overclock? We agree then? Its worth noting that the variables of this are not just the voltages, temps or power draw. Also the time under load makes a difference. If you use your computer for a few hours a week, this is less degradation than 24/7 and a "poor overclock/bad hygiene" will take much longer to have an effect. Just to be clear I'm not saying you have a bad overclock! I'm definitely no expert. I have no qualifications in this area but my research about overclocking and chip lifespan points to degradation being pretty normal in CPUs and GPUs. I've come across it many times in various postings and videos - Including the one I linked (one of the best actually) although I appreciate it is 1 hour - but I did watch it all. As I said I'm not a professional and happy to take your knowledge as different. Your experiences of overclocking are encouraging to me as I am possibly a little over worried about degradation so I take care and it sounds like you do too. One of the general lines of information that I seem to come across again and again is that an incorrect "stable" voltage might not be stable after a year or two or three, and then needs more voltage to stay at the same frequency or the frequency reducing. This is degradation although also a slight simplification. This is supported as one of the three routes of degradation discussed in the video above. I cannot verify the content of buildzoid's videos but I have watched a lot of them and find them really insightful in his "rambling format" and he seems to have the verification of other widely regarded PC media channels such as gamers nexus. -

Admittedly I don't know what the price differences there are between countries... But I would be careful with this thinking. In UK the Q2 is half the price of a G2, but the Q2 is built around add-ons so I have a cable and seperate headphones (built in sound is awful). So its sort of the same price. Depends on what you have already. Some people buy new straps and face gaskets, extra batteries. Q2 could cost more in this case. -

The Q2's wireless feature is very good for standing VR games, less important for seated VR. Its all very subjective. Worth noting that I think next year we are going to see new headsets on the market, probably a new oculus, maybe a new valve, probably another WMR headset so buying now might not be great. You could even pickup a used rift S, get yourself going and be ready for the preorders. If you have the power to run a Q2 or G2 a rift S on 1.5 SS will be a great temporary experience. Its not that bad once super sampled. Not so great natively. -

Slightly over high voltages, too much heat, too much current. All gradual. You have clearly avoided the worst of this. From my understanding all CPU/GPU chips degrade, but usually very very slowly - longer than their usable lifespan. Overclock will likely speed this up, again not usually a problem but it can be if you don't take care. Lots of variables in place too. Vid is on chip degradation as it covers GPUs too. -

Most dodgy overclocks result in CPU degradation. You have to do something fairly stupid to get an immediate death. This is the real danger with overclocking as the degradation can be slow enough that you don't know until it sets in. And then its too late, you will have to dial it back and possibly at that point stock speeds may be difficult. Anyone interested in overclocking, I would watch buildzoids YT vids "ramblings" on CPU degradation, load line calibration and voltage regulation. All very interesting. Mostly the two on load line calibration are especially worth it. Fairly long, but all very good info. Either that or just leave well alone and plan an upgrade. -
I think vulkan would be a 2.8 or even 3.0 update...
-
Is that because oculus is natively integrated into DCS whereas WMR isn't. I think this goes back to the oculus CV1 days as they were the first to hit the consumer market properly. I think OpenXR is changing all this and so will probably level the playfield in this respect.
-
Yeah as I said in my OP, VR is very subjective. Everyone likes and dislikes certain aspects of the different hardware (if they get the chance to try more than one!). We are all doing this mostly very separately and there are little opportunities for people to experience what others see on other systems. to My own experience through rift s, G2, Q2 is different to yours, but I don't want to make this into a hardware v hardware thread.

Oh yeah. Restart can't hurt! Good luck.

Mine was set to auto by default and I saw the effect. There is options for enabled and disabled. You don't have to use the debug tool but if the option exist and you want to check it's switched on then it is here you can check. Do you know where your debug tool is? I haven't looked through the settings anywhere for it but I assume it's like asw so there is probably keybinds that do it but I haven't a clue what they are.
-
Yes both link types. But you do need v33 in both headset and PC app. If you check the debug tool it has an option for "Link Sharpening" enabled, disabled and auto. If that's there you will at least know if it's updated.

DCS is single core priority so an overclock that improves single core performance will help. Maybe not by massive amounts but all helps. Worth thinking that if you have hyper threading, disabling this might help you achieve a higher and cooler all (physical) core over clock. Yes you have reduced the performance of your cpu in all multi threaded tasks. But you should be able to get more in single core applications, like dcs. -
Just noticed that since the last patch I now have the JF-17 available in the mission editor... (I don't own it nor have I tested it) I can only jump in when it's it client mode and it seems to be lacking a cockpit.... Unless it has one of those see through HMDs like an f35....

Where do new players go to meet and fly with new players?
Hoirtel replied to Skwirl865's topic in New User Briefing Room
There are servers that have no password with SRS auto join. Choose one that has other players on join, and do a comm check. That would at least test it. I can recommend tactical DCS training server but... you need discord to get password. I went through a similar thing, as I didn't have discord but as a means to get into a main community like TDC its fine. -
No I've never bothered with 3rd party mods or shaders. Tried a shader mod a while ago for performance reasons and wasn't impressed so never bothered with anything else.

With the way Oculus are going I could see them bring something like this in. I mean the Q2 must have a GPU inside as its standalone. I guess its used for the decoding of link signal but maybe there is a little left for AA... Yeah, I was going to experiment with adding MFAA in Nvidia control panel on top of DCS MSAA. I have tried this before and the effect is very very minimal, but might just take the edge off the extra sparkles.

Thanks, thought it must have been mentioned before. Couldn't find it. Didn't look in the rift thread....

To all other quest 2 users (and others interested). I am wondering what others have experienced with the new v33 software which includes the link sharpening option. As I don't follow oculus roadmaps I didn't even realise this was coming and saw it mentioned in a youtube vid. Oculus always do phased releases and I seem to have been included fairly early as I have it on both PC and headset already. Some people are say you need to enable beta, but I do not run any oculus betas so it is coming out as standard. I have seen quite a considerable increase in clarity/sharpness and it has no performance impact so pretty good all round. Everything inside and outside the cockpit is now much sharper. However I have noticed that this has also increased the aliasing which is probably to be expected. I have tried playing around with other settings including reducing and increasing render settings (all of them) in turn to see if it has an impact, even beyond what I can run just to see if it works or not. So far nothing really reduces it, its not a huge problem as I was living with some aliasing anyway (2x msaa is my normal). Don't like disabling the link sharpening now as I have already got used to it. Might just be hitting the limits of the panels. For reference I run 80hrz at full oculus render scale DCS PD 1 and default SS in debug. Lowering DCS pd or oculus SS (debug) just retains most aliasing and makes cockpit gauges and far distance a little hazy. Raising oculus SS to 1.5 is really sharp, with aliasing a little reduced but this is way beyond the capacity to run at the moment (high/max settings, full resolution, 3090) I have to say that I kind of don't want to like oculus due to the facebook link/world domination attempts but this headset really does keep delivering and really holds its own now as a PC VR headset. As with all VR is very subjective and everyone has aspects they do and don't like. I have had a G2 previously but went back to oculus.

reported earlier Is this a bug? Fuel leak stoppage failure?
Hoirtel posted a topic in Bugs and Problems
Just loaded up the mossie to have a quick look before I had to go out (looks great!!) Didn't do anything other than flip views but on ending I noticed several failures linked to fuel leaks. Just thought I would check here. Could well be all correct. -
For me taxiing was the worst part to begin with and I found anything else that involved driving or moving across the ground (shooters without teleport) way worse than the flying. As others have said, build it up slowly and you will be fine. Go for runway starts and easy circuits. Now I can do anything in DCS with no problem, but if I ever have a long vr shooter game session (without teleporting) I still feel a tiny bit wobbly but I really don't do that very much.

Oh ok. Didn't know this. How do I get ODT to use these? Is oculusdebugtoolcli a command line version?
