There's some Steam guides here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/guides/?browsefilter=trend&requiredtags[]=Modding%20or%20Configuration ..that talk about similar ways. Ivan - have you considered capturing this info in a short guide? -

You can do what you like, I was more referring to ED Support and TFC. -

Yep, just wanted to point out the 'why', as in there's a decent reason why support can't be offered and that the points are related. :) -

Steam Family Sharing is disabled on the Steam base DCS World, and I don't think this will change that. As for the hybrid install, the main two comments are: - Support. If people mess up then it's a bit harder to help them, either stand-alone or Steam. Where some modules update and others don't it can be confusing for people not familiar with the bits. So basically a 'There be Dragons!' disclaimer/fair warnings when doing this stuff. - Steam Publisher License Agreement. It breaks the standard dev publisher terms (I don't know ED's explicit agreement T&A but would guess this wasn't asked for as an exception). It's technically more of a 'spirit of agreement' loophole, where ED shop sell all the modules and then Steam is used as a free download service for the bulk of the app, i.e. no food for Gabe. Valve usually let this slide, but you can see that if a developer starts advocating or supporting it then it could turn into an issue. The main reason for the hybrids is the new modules being released on the stand-alone first, which is purely a commercial decision and good for ED (plus Steam doesn't require exclusivity, not wants any). The bf109 files are up on Steam ready now, and the store page will be unlocked in a couple of weeks would be my best guess. -
People are kinda funny. It's not the price that determines the success of a module, but the revenue. In terms of short sales, often a lower price will increase revenue, not reduce it. It is how sales work. If you sell 1000 MiG21 modules at $60 then that's not as good as selling 3000 MiG21 modules at $30. If you have 2000 people whose price-point isn't over $30 then, again, that's how sales work. Often people just don't like to see stuff on sale at a value less than they paid personally, and it's nothing to do with wanting more or less success to whoever made the thing. Now the MiG21 may be in such a niche market even compared to other DCS modules that volume sale revenue won't make a difference, i.e. you can't ever sell 3000 copies at $30 but just 1000. If that's the case then the ceiling is pretty much known on what you'll make before any sale - as you really only market to existing customers and aren't expecting many new ones. You go from competing with other purchases to being more a luxury item, and there isn't really much benefit of a sale either way. :)

Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues
fearlessfrog replied to ShaZe88's topic in Steam Support
I guess, some the posts were a bit fruity (not mine, naturellement), but bear in mind I am visiting from a forum combat area where live fire is an occupational hazard :) The key thing is to separate out the 'Steam is a big bad company and reads my dreams' conspiracy stuff with the 'DCS can't do these things on Steam' stuff. It's worth correcting the misinformation as it has a habit of being blindly repeated out of habit. These are things that are not a matter of opinion, they are simple testable facts. I keep reading many references to stuff like 'Steam gets fixes much later' when that's not been true for over a year now (maybe two, I'd have to look up the date). Sometimes people just go 'oh, I didn't know that' but sometimes they just go down the 'Yeah, yeah, but Steam are all EVIL!' path that is abstract enough not to bother arguing about. You can ask for evidence of various evil activities, but it always ends up as 'a friend told me' or just foamy mouth replies that boil down to opinion. I have good friends that work at Valve, so while mildly annoying, it doesn't really bother me and is up there with hoax moon landings and the like. The accuracy of the Steam DCS info is what's important. -

Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues
fearlessfrog replied to ShaZe88's topic in Steam Support
You responded in a Steam thread with lots of incorrect information, I'm not sure how you can deny that. It's not really a case of being a fan or not, but of helping people with correct info. I'm far from agitated or berzerk(?), just more bemused. :) DCS sells really well through the Steam store, and that helps make new toys for us all. If you don't want people to use it, that's fine, but saying things like it doesn't allow betas or has updates that are always later is not accurate info. As for 'twisting' being 'install a module', well, since I don't think people should do that anyway, it's not worth correcting you one final time. -
Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues
fearlessfrog replied to ShaZe88's topic in Steam Support
Yep, the mixing of modules is not really a good idea. The thread got off track where shagrat started claiming Steam didn't do a bunch of things (late updates, no betas, no mods - all untrue) got contradicted and then turned all crazy on us. As someone that does a fair bit of DCS support each day, it's ironic to be told by someone like that the support is an issue :) -
Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues

I'm getting pretty tired of you misquoting me shagrat. That's twice you attributed things to me that weren't written. Point to where I said it was simple? A quote would be great, either that or an apology. Also, please refrain from calling people 'fanbios' and the like. It gives the impression of you being an idiot. I don't think you are an idiot, so this sort of talk is beneath us all. Quit it please. Thanks. -
Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues

If your arguments with Steam are now reduced to comparisons with Valve or Apple to a corrupt state government or police force then it's pretty much the end of the thread. Thanks for playing and have a nice day. :) -
Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues
fearlessfrog replied to ShaZe88's topic in Steam Support
There's a common English expression that probably applies here shagrat - 'When you are in a deep hole you should just stop digging'. The guide isn't something I would do or recommend, but mentioned as it was a direct answer to the one of your many incorrect statements you made about DCS World and Steam. Many Steam users use that technique though when modules are launched via the ED site first, and this was a way around that. A module being released on Steam later is a commercial decision, and not about how that platform works or updates. There are no registry keys to change, the DCS Updater actually works without having to manually download updates (you can grab the DCS Updater separately) and the MP keys are the same - and when brought up on the Steam forums (where I moderate for ED, apologies if you're banned there as that probably wasn't me) I always try to let people know that this isn't really supported. I doubt that Steam would be happy with this technique either, given it bypasses their store but uses their platform. As for support, yes I agree with you. Given your understanding of these complex things and the many corrections and misunderstandings of Steam, I also think you should definitely keep your install simple and supported. Please. -

Check out the guides here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/guides/ I think it's called 'How to activate Non-Steam modules to Steam' or near-abouts. -
Steam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Steam Specific Issues
fearlessfrog replied to ShaZe88's topic in Steam Support
Ok, here's the info you need: - The Steam version gets updates at the same time as the ED version, as the build scripts uploads to the Steam distribution at the same time as the ED one. You were incorrect about this in your post, so I wanted to correct you. - The Steam open-beta version works great, and is available like the updates at exactly the same time as the ED release. You said it actually didn't exist, so I wanted to correct you. I like to help. - The Steam open-beta uses a delta of your current install, in a similar way to the ED one. You were incorrect about this again, so hopefully you are seeing a theme emerge here. As for the rest of the nonsense about secret stuff happening 'on a friends PC', whatever. I had a friend that saw BigFoot once, and he swears he'll see him again one-day. Steam is by far the most successful PC download store, with about 90% market share and over 100 million active Steam accounts. ED needs to sell through that store to be pragmatic about it. I don't care you don't use Steam, I just want to help correct any misinformation I read where people that don't like it use either their ignorance or excuses to make stuff up about it. ED has made some really good money from that store, and that helps the sim overall. Ignorance isn't anything to do with being young or old. Phrases like 'fan-boy' would be something I would expect a kid to say, and you don't sound like a kid. You should share your opinion about Steam, and I welcome it, but then you should also understand you'll be corrected when you say things that are completely wrong too. PS You are attributing things to me in your reply that I didn't say, and I think you have your replies mixed up. Easy to do at any age. :) -

The only thing that you said correctly was that modules get chosen to be released earlier outside of Steam. Everything else was wrong. -
Well thanks for the heads-up on this one. The demo has a time limit and I let out an audible 'awww' when it stopped and wanted to continue to play, which is a good sign. Will pick this one up on Steam. Cheers!

It's actually quite fun, although the people of Munich probably don't appreciate how much danger they are in tonight. http://i.imgur.com/xw2yWKz.jpg There's no install, just a zip. To get it to work I had to manually create an 'Autosaves' folder next to the .exe file location. I attached a debugger to the exception, so that was obviously the first test of the sim :)

The demo seems pretty basic. Located here: http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/76739-about-the-demo/

Yeah, I didn't want that to sound mean though. Probably like SkateZilla, I too get a bit punchy at repeat questions. On the Steam side I've had guys ask the same question in the same thread under the same answer, for one of those 'Yeah, but what about male models?'Zoolander style times. :D
-
Probably the same reason you replied to this question when it had already been answered identically twice above already. People like to write more than read. :)
-
Steam treats the modules like DLC, so it stops people from buying unless it thinks you don't have the 'base' bits. You should be able to start the download of DCS World on Steam, let it get to 1% and pause it and then go buy and use the key. After that just remove any local steam install via Steam's DCS World entry. That's the theory anyway, as it's hard for me to do (as I already have it in my steam library)..

Releases yes (as a choice by the publisher), but incorrect for updates. c0ff's update script pushes to the Steam distribution and the ED updater at the same time.
