  1. It only makes sense if the strategy works :) in that for each stand-alone you get an extra, say $5, but then you lose if people in a larger storefront/market who just go buy something else in the interim? Example: X = 2 week increase in ED store Sabre sales that would previously have been Steam store ED sales. Y = 2 week lost sales from Steam if you had the Sabre available to 70 million potential purchasers. There's also a knock-on impact of people not bothering to 'switch over' to the proper version where things come out earlier. Bohmia Interactive, Dovetail, even Creative Assembly as niche players in niche markets like sims all went through this before. If you can't make Y bigger than X then it's not a path to decent growth and success in today's PC market, which is what we all want for DCS.
  2. Updating for a Steam release can take about an hour, as most publishers have a store page ready to go. The release files are all there already, as the ED build publishes to both their own servers and Steam at the same time (via script). The Sabre page was added some time in June: http://steamdb.info/depot/306240/ (The store page for the Sabre when the 'private' flag is ticked off will be: http://store.steampowered.com/app/306240/ ) As you can see at the bottom of this list, there are a few getting ready to go that are still private (it's fun to line then up with what new modules we know of): http://steamdb.info/app/223750/dlc/ A bit more cynical theory would be ED make more money from selling from their own store (no Steam commission to pay) so if they can 'disincentivize' with delays or differences then it helps the bottom line to move people to stand-alone DCS World (if you don't count your own hosting/labor costs to do these things yourself). The other side of that coin is unfortunately some Steam people will just go play something else and not wait or even buy, so it's not always a net gain. Steam have also had issues with publishers that do this, but they don't tend to notice. A less cynical/happy/business driven reason would be that the release dates are just a bit random and that Steam is more of an afterthought (plus it's nice to give non-Steam customers an earlier look as a one-off 'thanks'). It might not be product policy to always delay. Dunno. PS Sorry for slight OT, but as I have a background with Steam then it's probably best to crush the 'it's because they are doing the Steam paperwork' reason as the best guess :)
  3. Interesting display tech here: https://research.nvidia.com/publication/cascaded-displays-spatiotemporal-superresolution-using-offset-pixel-layers Video:
  4. RE:resolution - Here you go, an Oculus Rift simulator for those curious: http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/ aeliusg - your calculations assume a linear distortion for the entire FOV, which isn't the case. I don't disagree that a 4k rift would be nice though :D
  5. Valve aren't a charity. See here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/38596747699779035/#c38596748238233959
  6. > DCS: F-86F Sabre beta is planned to be released on Steam on 9 August 2014. http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/864975632502624100/#c38596748107856724
  7. Here's the track: http://www.filedropper.com/mig15-f86-8vs8 Just a plain-jane starting waypoint as per the mission editor defaults of ~6000ft, 270kts (the screenshots have the infobar on them). Looking at the debrief, not a single F-86 browning bullet landed, so as Leo said, maybe an issue with the AI and aiming..
  8. Just set up a quick and easy 8 vs 8 merge. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=291336900 All just on 'High' AI, with default loadouts (clean, with guns). Result: All F-86's shot down. No MiG-15bis losses. http://steamcommunity.com/id/fearlessfrog/screenshots/ Pics here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/38596748046922760/ I was surprised, although don't know enough historically to know if this is correct? Maybe just a quirk of the beta?
  9. MiG-21 appears orange when zoomed out, like some missing LOD info/texture: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=291263438 Steam 1.2.9 open beta channel 1.2.9.30804
  10. Yep, I agree. As I understand it from c0ff the Steam depot FTP upload is just an automatic part of the build process now - plus it wouldn't be ideal for MP to have an ED open beta, Steam open beta (there is still one going in a channel) plus the mainline base DCS World being different. The F-86 store page, keys etc might not be ready Saturday, but 1.2.9 open beta might be likely to drop at the same time as the ED downloader but on Steam.
  11. F-86 Sabre packages are up on Steam already, check out the list at the bottom (about 2 hours ago an updated build): http://steamdb.info/app/223750/depots/ Password protected, so if not launched at the same time then probably a commercial reason rather than technical one.
  12. It depends if the exact same 1.2.9 version is available on the [openbeta] channel on Steam or not, but I'd suspect not. Plus if purchased with ED the key can't be used on Steam. Delaying releases and having higher prices (e.g. FC3) for Steam will kill DCS World off there. Many here will be happy enough with that, but the market of 70 million active Steam users, probably less so.
  13. Sort of on-topic (and if there is one here, it's pretty well hidden) I was surprised how popular War Thunder is doing as a casual WWII sim: http://steamcharts.com/app/236390 It may be counter-intuitive to a lot of people here, but DCS is significantly smaller in current market-size than WT (or even Train Simulator actually).. Crack the 'accurate sim but fun' nut (even via WWII content) and there are obviously large markets waiting..
  14. He's a rep from these guys http://www.simpit.co.nz/ ..so, it kinda makes sense, in that he has a commercial reason to spread FUD to feed his kids or something (with $67,000 projector system sales..) EDIT: I'm amazed Matt is ok with leaving stuff like libel against OR on this board. I have friends and old colleagues that now work at OR and I know for a fact this isn't some sort of criminal 'scam'. Maybe the relationship with ED has changed, which is a real shame as there was plenty of potential.
  15. Reddit, steam and the usual youtube game review channels are huge now. IGN, RPS, gamespot etc are going ok, but not like they used to. Games journalism is almost an oxymoron the last couple of years. :) A lot of niche sites are doing badly as a new gen of 'user content' places like reddit takes off and they don't adapt.
  16. I think for anyone in this situation (I don't think there are many) then it's really just a case of using JSGME and enabling this mod first, then followed by the HDR69XX one - it overwrites that hdr.fx just fine (just say 'yes' on the warning) and it all looks great - thanks again for your work on this.
  17. Hi! I have a AMD 6970, so have to use the HDR69XX shaders fix to turn on HDR (without the white blobs flashing up). I'd like to play with this but JSGME complains about clashes in trying to update hdr.lua (which makes sense, as both mods change the hdr shader). So just a couple of quick questions: - Can I use this effectively on HDR Normal rather than Warm (the flashes fix was for normal, so if I merge by hand it's easier). - I guess I need HDR on for this, I had assumed so but wanted to check? Thanks for your work on this.
  18. Hi, The DCS 1.2.8.27529 update today comes through on Steam only via the 'openbeta' branch. The previous 1.2.8 updates since public release have come through the main (non beta) channel, but not this latest one. It's not a problem, but wanted to mention it as it might not be deliberate.
  19. Hello Mothership Forums, I've added a (very) rough pre-requisites checker for the Steam crowd here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/558754899730385644/ I didn't have time to do the dependency walking bits for the exact vcredist versions, so had a guess. Not sure if this helpful or not as yet but exploring it now. Feedback welcome.
  20. Yep, same file. I tend to avoid using direct Steam CDN links as they can age badly :D PS Love your Mi8 English cockpits mods Devrim, so while I'm here, many thanks for that - appreciated.
  21. If you are keen to see the new manual, then it's available from the new F15C Steam store page here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/250300/ (right hand side, lower 'View the manual')
  22. While you wait for proper support, here's some things to try (especially step 9 if it worked before): http://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/864975249578683704/ Hope that helps.
  23. Just a gentle reminder that people have a choice of downloads here, in that a Steam download of DCS World is usually very fast. Info on how to activate etc here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=113587 The updates arrive at the same time as ED servers, so there's no delay for patches.
  24. Ah excellent. Thank you!
  25. Take your ED module keys and activate them in Steam. How To's here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=113587
