What I mean is.. if you're looking out of the cockpit.. chances are you're seeing the HUD predominately. It's frequently viewed so requires appropriate attention. These are warplanes and there's nothing more important than situational awareness (eyes up is the reason they place appropriate data in the HUD). I'm sure that if ED plans to make adjustments, they'll have the access and talent they need to make it happen, they're fairly sierra hotel.. but if we gather some conclusive information for them it may be further incentive.

Grimes, is there any advantage to using 'Late Activation' rather than 'Start Time'/2, or are they completely equal in function? I'm seeking optimization for a mission with a lot of units.

Helios on Surface Pro 3
StrongHarm replied to StrongHarm's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes, I ended up using a SP1 for the Abris.. it looks better. I found another nice feature where the SP3 serving up the Shval display can double as a kneeboard. I set OneNote up behind the Shval display.. when I want to take notes I alt+tab to bring OneNote in front of the Shval Display.. then I can write on the SP3 like a kneeboard. Then just alt+tab back to DCS. -
Awesome, thanks Snoopy! Conclusive information instead of conjecture is always good. Perhaps you can look at the HUD from different perspectives and describe whether the theories in this thread are correct since pics are unlikely. The more information the better. Sorry to trouble you with this. I know you're probably busy as hell, but the HUD is arguably the most important object in the sim to render accurately since we view it more than anything else while in flight.. and I'm hoping they'll make some corrections when they update it for Oculus.

I had a few spare Surface Pro 3s laying around so I decided to see if I could port my shval and abris over to them. I ended up using TeamViewer (because of multiple simultaneous controlling connections), Helios, and Windows Magnifier. Just: - Set up your Helios on a secondary monitor - TeamView(free) in with each of your Surface Pros - Open Windows Magnifier on each SP3 and zoom in to the areas you want to use (landscape or portrait, doesn't matter) Enjoy touch capability on some very nice displays. Oh.. also, if you use the 'invert colors' capability within Magnifier the Shval looks like FLIR heh

Analysis Results: KA-50 and WH HOTAS
StrongHarm replied to StrongHarm's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Yeah, I'm really pleased with the app. Be sure to check out my prepared VAC profile. If you create all the possible wingman commands, there's quite a lot of them. My profile will at least be a solid foundation. Luck to you. -
I think they're going to have to address the HUD ratio, resolution, and perspective for the Oculus anyway. Maybe we can provide the devs with some conclusive points on how the HUD diverges from a realistic and/or usable view to give them some preemptive intel. Can you weigh in on this Snoopy.. are you still Crew Chief on the Warthog? Maybe you could speak with a pilot about any challenges they have with the HUD? A few pictures from different positions and perspectives would rock if you can get authorization and you can find the time. If nothing else maybe with the HUD test text showing?

You can convert pro profiles to standard. This is from the profile thread:

Here's another HOTAS reference. You can find an editable xls in the original post. -
Is the Manual wrong? I Need help. Thanks!
StrongHarm replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Good to see you too Snoopy! I hope you and your family are well. I've always been reading the boards but work has had me too busy to be really active. You know me though.. I can never pass up a good RTFM.:book: -
Try this prebuilt x52 profile. A lot of people say they love it. It comes with full instructions and a control diagram.

Is the Manual wrong? I Need help. Thanks!
StrongHarm replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I've been revisiting the Blackshark lately.. and working in the editor a bit. After I'm done revisiting my 2nd favorite girl, I'll venture back to my first love, Ms. Warthog. I haven't been online.. but I'm sure I will shortly. I just ordered the Oculus DK2.. I suspect Data Intelligence will take a backseat to Warthog once I get it setup. -
Is the Manual wrong? I Need help. Thanks!
StrongHarm replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
There's nothing that's just for show. There are no shortcuts to learning the bird. The manual is written in a top down fashion so that one concept clarifies the next. I can tell you with certainty that partially reading the manual will make you only a partial pilot. Some people are ok with that.. not me. With full knowledge of the bird, my sorties contain no hesitation.. only devastation. -

StrongHarm replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
No shame! You're one of the 28.14% that will actually read the manual all the way through. In a few days you'll know more than 71.86% of users.. some of which have been flying the Warthog for years but are still lacking information. Mark my words, if you complete the entire manual you'll be answering questions for people with a join date of 2008. :) POLL: I read the manual all the way through 132 28.14% I read what I had to.. I plan to read the rest one day 173 36.89% I read what I had to.. the rest is a reference only if I get lost 132 28.14% Hate manuals. I'll learn as I go. 32 6.82% -
Jib, read my post just above yours, it addresses this very challenge. You need to provide a stable platform to the seeker head.

ABRIS ERBL submode breaks map orientation?
StrongHarm replied to Fishbreath's topic in Bugs and Problems
That IS a ginormous red arrow though.. it's like the 'do not eat' warning on the anti-moisture capsules.. heheh I meant no implication and intended it in good humor.. text is such a poor medium for human expression. Forgive me. -
ABRIS ERBL submode breaks map orientation?
StrongHarm replied to Fishbreath's topic in Bugs and Problems
No dude.. it's not as simple as a 'didn't read the manual' problem. I myself love the manual and have been through it dozens of times.. You read the OP? It's about NAV not returning to the orientation specified in options.. after returning to NAV from ERBL... I really appreciate the big red 'are you stupid or what?' arrow though.. thanks for that! heheh -
Did this work out for you Giovanni?

ABRIS ERBL submode breaks map orientation?
StrongHarm replied to Fishbreath's topic in Bugs and Problems
This problem persists and is very annoying. I wouldn't call it critical, but it is a big greasy zit on the forehead of an otherwise beautiful girl. -
On the left you have David Clarks, which are common in military aviation. On the right is the Razor Blackshark headset.

UTM and MGRS Coordinates Explained - NOT
StrongHarm replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
MGRS isn't within the scope of the manual. There are a lot of general theory topics that I think were omitted for very good reason. The manual is more of a technical publication than a training syllabus. It's a foundational document containing targeted technical specifications that requires external research and clarification. I think this was a good idea. The manual is already very long. According to my calculations 71.86% of users don't fully read the manual. If it were longer that number would be greater. We live in a world that demands instant gratification. I should have mentioned that my post was nearly four years old. Like the manual it was just intended to provide foundational understanding, but the link to Military Map Reading 201 provides more specific information. -
OK.. this may not be for everyone. It could require some patience in.. altering volumes.. I guess. Effect may be dependent on your equipment too. I promise I'm not imagining things though hehe. I can FEEL the wind and engines.. even when it's not too loud. I can definitely hear the external source as well.. it emulates the effect of 'headset audible confinement' with ambient external noise outside of the cans. Oh well... sorry it didn't work out for you.
