Maybe I should also clarify that the kills on me were made by: - SU-27 - F14 - F18 - Mirage For some reason they seem to outperform me all the time.
-
I also noticed that most guys prefer to fly the F18/F14 and Mirage for dogfighting. i wonder if that is because of their good performance or because the modules have been out for longer than the Viper. It's the same with online dogfighting championships. I wonder if this year we will see more Vipers with online competitions.

Had another go at dogfighting in multiplayer last night. I shot down about 4 aircraft but got shot down at least 10 times. So my kill/be killed ratio is no bueno! My trigger discipline is getting better but I think I need to work on my BFM skills. I am making my way through the F16 Basic Employment Manual Air to Air chapter, Air Combat by Shaw and starting on The Art of the Kill to gain more knowledge. Some of these guys online are incredible with how quickly they get on my 6 and are able to shoot me down with a quick squeeze of the trigger. Just wondering, does the funnel on the HUD adjust when you change the wingspan setting on the UFC? I know it's supposed to but is this actually modeled in DCS?
-
Interesting! Lucky indeed. I'm a big Viper fan and would love to have a few hours of flying it with someone who has actually flown it. How did the BFM go? If he was impressed with the DCS Viper you should show him Falcon BMS, the avionics on that are as good as it gets really.
-
You find the gunsight stable? Maybe in a sustained G turn but when I change the bank angle or G the thing is all over the place.
-
Interesting to hear and glad it's not just me then! Were those intercept standard STERN intercepts or?
-
Yeah good point but I am going through a phase of practicing BFM and shooting the gun. It's kinda comical how crap I am at getting a good shot. I can track someone nicely and be in the ballpark for a shot but I miss quite often.
-
Yes, when the bogey is moving like that I am OK with getting a shot in but when the jinks start I really struggle to get optimal shooting conditions which as someone above mentioned is the reason defenders jink. Of course that makes sense... it just seems that whenever I dogfight someone they get a shot on me pretty quick. Could be luck, could be skill. The F18 and F14 guys also seem to out turn me quite easily. I try to keep around 330 kts for the optimum turn rate.

I read that the A10 in DCS is used as a procedures trainer in the US National Guard. So I wonder if any of the forces use DCS for teaching BFM concepts before doing it in real life and potentially wasting lots of gas money. I know they have their own dome simulators and procedure trainers but I wonder if with a VR setup it could be a money saving setup that would allow more trainees to train at the same time and thus saving time and money. Which is where my original question comes from. Oh yeah, I went on the just dogfighting server without swtiching the DOT labels on and I got shot down before Icould even figure out who belonged to which team.

Seriously, I am the worst when it comes to shooting the gun A2A. I'm sort of ok when I am gently tracking a turning target and pulling him into the BATR but when the target jinks I have a real hard time putting the BATR dot on him. Any tips on how to get better?

A question for the people that have done real life BFM. I am curious how DCS compares to the real thing when it comes to BFM? Apart from not feeling the G's and maybe some airplanes' performance may not be accurate but when it comes to carrying out BFM tactics and maneuvres, is DCS good or is it like an arcade game to you?

For jets. I listened to an interview with the F14 designers recently and I have to say I am amazed by the amount of work they put in to make it as realistic as possible. from what I've read the Mig21 module is the most realistic, I think it's made by the same guys that made the F14. I just wish they did the F16. From what I've read most people seem to say it's 1) Mig 21 2) A10C 3) F14

Awesome! Thanks , I shall try that out! -
VR Shaders mod for better VR experience
Bog9y replied to Kegetys's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
So, the guys that have the shaders mod installed, do you uninstall it everytime you want to go play in multiplayer on a server? I read somewhere you can install the shaders mod that will pass the integrity check but after searching for it I haven't found this option? -
Can someone tell me what setting you recommend in the SteamVR settings for motion smoothing when you have the reprojection set to "MOTIONVECTOR" . I have tried the various settings but can't figure out what difference they make and which one is recommended. So is it: GLOBAL / ENABLED / DISABLED / FORCED ALWAYS ON ?

Omega tau Podcast - Flying and simulating the F-14
Bog9y replied to Knock-Knock's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I have just listened to this podcast and all I can say is WOW! I am amazed by how much detail went into making this module! I had no idea they put that much effort into it. I haven't flown the F14 much as I'm quite new to DCS and focusing on the F16 as I know that aircraft from playing Falcon in the past. Oh how I wish that Heatblur was in charge of the F16 module! -
Below is an extract from the F16 MLU M1 Manual. Ok, it is for the APG-66 radar so the APG-68 that is simulated in DCS may not be the same or even have this function perhaps. And for me personally I tend to use ACM only within 10 Nm , so it's close to visual range. At visual range I would rather use the HMCS method to find a target because I only need to press the enable button and look at the target rather then try to slew the cursor around the MFD. Slewable ACM mode allows the pilot to slew a scanning radar patch, approximately 60 deg wide and 20 deg elevation, anywhere within the radar FOV. Slewable ACM is the only available pitch and roll stabilized ACM scan pattern. SLEW is entered by slewing the cursor when in any ACM mode. Initial movement of the cursor will command the radar scan to initialize at zero degree azimuth and elevation. Subsequent movement of the cursor will cause the 60 deg x 20 deg patch to move about the radar FOV. The Slewable ACM MFD symbology (Figure 3-8) includes an antenna pointing symbol, ACM scan pattern indicator, and minimum and maximum altitude coverage depictions. The ACM scan pattern indicator box graphically depicts the 60° x 20° slewable scan area. The box moves on the MFD as the scan pattern is slewed to indicate scan pattern location. The antenna pointing symbol, the cross imbedded in the scan pattern indicator box, indicates the center of the scan pattern. Minimum and maximum slewable search altitudes are shown in the center of the ACM MFD format. The slewable ACM HUD symbology includes a slewable ACM borecross 3 deg below the aircraft HUD borecross. Also displayed are a min/max search altitude depiction and a search cue. The min/max altitudes are computed at one half the selected ACM range (Figure 3-10). An 8 mR circle depicts the center of the scan pattern relative to the slewable scan cross. If the center of the scan is up and left of the slewable scan cross, the circle will be deflected up and left of the center of the cross. Minimum and maximum altitude coverage is displayed directly below and above the circle, respectively

DCS Persian Gulf - terrain noise tiles fix.
Bog9y replied to Mustang's topic in Texture/Map Mods for DCS World
Do you need to delete the FXO and Metshaders2 folder (for Kegety's shaders mod) after installing this? -
You have to delete those? really? i didn't know that

I found it was still shimmering with 2x...and even 4x. With 2x it just seemed a bit more blurred and less sharp.

Thank you whoever started this thread!!! I had my IPD set to 62 , thinking it was to do with your pupil distance and the VR headset. I had no idea it adjusts the scale! I adjusted mine to 58 and the Viper pit is so much better!!! The MFDs are much easier to read now. THANKS!!

No, I was having fun with some friends in MP and didn't investigate further. I assumed it was some kind of bug with the avionics. Silly me
-
Nope, closed it after refueling. I can't remember if the warning appeared during refueling though.
-
Very interesting! Thanks for finding that! I didn't know that DCS had trapped fuel modelled. Looks like I'll need to do some more investigating on this

Hi guys, Last night when I flew the Viper I got a message/warning on the HUD, bottom left, below NAV (I think) that said something like TRIP . I looked through all sorts of F16 manuals but couldn't find what it means. I did get a BINGO warning prior to that and I did refuel air-to-air once. I can not remember exactly when the warning came but it would have been after the BINGO warning. Does anybody know what this warning means?
