bkthunder Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 The F-15 seems to produce a lot of smoke while IRL it is barely visible, at least in all of the many pictures/videos. Also the smoke for american engines is usually of a brownish color rather than black. ED Team BIGNEWY Posted December 22, 2013 ED Team Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) Thanks for the observation, this topic would be more appropriate in the general section of flaming cliffs for discussion. Open Beta test reports area are for bugs that can be supported by a track file, logs and dxdiag. Bug reporting procedure can be found here. Pyroflash Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) The PW F-100-220 is pretty much smokeless for a given RPM. However, I have heard of smoke appearing in differing amounts during RPM changes. This appears to be consistent with what we see here. There may be some discrepancy as to the thickness of the smoke though. It also depends on how fast/how much you move the throttle. Try changing your camera perspective on the aircraft to a more realistic one (i.e. bottom up, viewing at a level angle, instead of viewing at an unusual oblique angle that wouldn't be possible without a chase plane or somesuch). If you do this, it should appear much more realistic. Edited December 22, 2013 by Pyroflash If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

aaron886 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 As far as I've gathered, big throttle changes, particularly a hard chop to idle or the last few %N2 before afterburner produce a bit of smoke on most modern US fighters. Something to do with the engine's reaction stabilizing, perhaps.

kk0425 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I would like to see a screenshot. I tried to see the heavy smoke you're seeing and I can only get a brief puff during rapid throttle changes.
Pyroflash Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Attached, smoothly (but relatively quickly) advance power from idle to mil. You should be able to easily see these results. If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.
mvsgas Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Probably, any '220 specialists we could get to answer this question? I am no expert, I have worked on -220/220E. They do smoke occasionally with rapid throttle changes. Like on this video kGOiNPTJPoY?t The GE-100 does it also LYOAwnPousg They are both smoke less than a Klimov RD-33 h7OEP5a6heo To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
Vekkinho Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I like the way it is now...that's a definite step forward. I just can't say for sure that MiG-29 and F-4 smoke more than other planes as they do IRL but I do believe that F-15 is a bit exaggerated... On the other hand I don't like the lack of heat blur.
