Howdy folks, I created a new weather mod to give us a little more variety in what we have currently. Hopefully you enjoy this while we wait for ED to give us a proper update to the weather system. This Weather mod includes the following features: 38 new weather presets for scattered showers, overcast/rain, stratus clouds, cumulus clouds, altostratus and altocumulus clouds. Cloud base altitude and thickness limits increased for all presets Fog visibility and thickness limits increased so you can create hazy atmosphere affects Six new density settings tweaked for scattered and isolated thunderstorms Rain and Thunderstorms precipitation now available for all cloud density settings Installation: Recommended: Use OvGME or other mod manager and install to DCS root directory. Make a backup if installing manually! To create thunderstorms: 1.) Select NOTHING from the Clouds Preset menu 2.) Configure the base altitude as desired 3.) Adjust the thickness to something between 15000-30000ft 4.) You can choose any density setting but I added six new ones. Density 11 - 16 are tweaked for thunderstorms 5.) Choose Thunderstorm or Rain from the Precptns option 6.) I recommend adding a lot of wind and turbulence as well 7.) Experiment with settings to get the look you want and enjoy! Download: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3335023/ 3/28/2025 - Updated to version 16 -Updated files for compatibility with DCS version DCS 2.9.14.8394 -Updated cirrus shader for a much more natural random look. Cirrus clouds will no longer cover the entire sky over the map and will appear in random patches. -Changed cirrus cloud fade interval to 30 minutes. The cirrus layer will fade in/out over a 30 minute period. Previously this was set very high to 24 hours so the cirrus clouds were basically static. -Added [Bandit648] tag to Scattered Thunderstorms 1 and Scattered Thunderstorms 2 cloud presets. 12/24/2024 - Updated to version 15 -Updated files for compatibilty wit DCS version 2.9.11.4686 12/17/2024 - Updated to version 14 -Added new cirrus cloud texture -Added two new cloud presets for Scattered Thunderstorms *note: thunder and lightning are not currently working on these presets -Updated METAR codes for all of the mod cloud presets 12/04/2024 - Updated to version 13 -Updated for compatibility with DCS 2.9.10.3948 10/30/2024 - Updated to version 12 -Minor update of files for compatibility with DCS 2.9.9.2280 10/11/2024 - Updated to version 11 - Updated cloud preset thumbnails. The Mod thumbnails are now outlined in yellow for better visibility. Thanks to forum user ggrewe for help with this. - Fixed issue with cloud presets being out of order 7/11/2024 - Updated to version 10 - Updated for DCS 2.9.6 compatibility. - Cirrus cloud textures updated 6/17/2024 - Update to version 9 - New cirrus cloud textures added! 5/23/2024 - Update to version 8 - compatibility for latest DCS version 2.9.5.55300 - updated cirrus layer 2/24/2024 - Update to version 7 - NEW cirrus cloud textures - Cirrus clouds now move and can be seen moving - Cirrus clouds don't fade in and out any longer. They don't change for 24 hours - Tuning and tweaks to several presets - Updated config files for compatibility with DCS 2.9.3.51704 **The cirrus cloud behavior and appearance are drastically changed in this update. There are 4 cirrus cloud textures and they usually are blended with each other, creating a variety of different looking skies. After loading a mission, if you want to change the look of the cirrus clouds simply re-load the mission by pressing SHIFT-R. Sometimes changing the date and/or time in the mission editor changes up the cirrus also. If you want to turn off cirrus clouds completely you can edit \Bazar\shaders\enlight\cirrus.fx in the MOD folder. Change line 36 in that file to: static const float cirrusThickness = 0; Make sure to disable/re-enable the mod in OVGME after making the change. If you think the new cirrus sucks and you want to go back to default delete the following files from the MOD folder and disable/re-enable in OVGME: \Bazar\shaders\enlight\cirrus.fx \Bazar\Effects\EffectTextures.zip Enjoy! 1/27/2024 - Updated to version 6 - Fixed small issues in several presets - Reworked "Scattered Showers 5" preset. Looks much better now - Minor adjustments to "Low Level Stratus 5" and "Nimbostratus with heavy rain". Clouds have a slightly softer look now. 1/24/2024 - Updated to version 5 - High level cirro clouds are back with cirrostratus and cirrocumulus presets! - 10 new cloud presets added - Many tweaks and adjustments to existing presets 1/11/2024 - Updated to version 4 - 2 new stratus cloud presets added - 3 new altostratus cloud presets added - 3 new altocumulus clouds presets added - Re-enabled default cirrus layer and lowered opacity. 1/9/2024 - Weather mod v3 update changes: - 5 new presets added - 2 new cloud types, cirrus and altostratus - Improved stratus cloud presets - Added preview thumbnails for all weather mod presets - Disabled default cirrus layer - Adjusted base altitude settings for all mod presets 1/6/2024 - Weather mod v2 update changes: -Reverted "Broken 2" preset back to default setting -Added 13 new presets! New presets include new overcast/rainy, scattered cumulus and low level stratus clouds. Make sure to adjust your cloud base height as needed with the new presets. The Scattered cumulus look best at low to mid level (2000 - 15000ft). Their base height dramatically changes the look. Status should be se t with base height very low (0 - 3000ft).

It's been 3 years since the weather presets released. Can we please get some storm options, would love to have a lightning storm going on. Some snow/winter presets etc. Yes I know you can do this with the old weather options but the clouds are just layered and ugly. Or lowering the temp so the rain is snow.

Greetings to all! I'm wondering if anyone has had any success concocting an overcast layer to navigate over and descend through. In my case I'm using the F16 which is equipped very well and includes performance and capability to match. It works too! Typical thick overcast layer. Navigate around on top as necessary, drop the gear, get on speed and Intercept the localizer. Pick up the glide slope, speed brakes out and descend into the MUCK. Zero visibility all the way down. it may be necessary to break minimums; fuel is low! Watch the altimeter unwind ... break out and land. Hopefully. Add wind and rain, etc. Would be lots of fun. But I just can't seem come up with a good combination that replicates this sort of thing in the real world. FOG doesn't seem to have any thickness or clear area underneath and seems to be mostly low visibility at ground level. Overcast layers like this are actually a fairly common weather phenomenon. As usual, any and all comments are certainly appreciated! jda8818

hi everyone I was testing some weather features and noticed that the wind at 1600ft changes dramatically, for every 1 knot on sea level 2knots are added to wind at 1600ft. This does not seem to be realistic since with this altitude diference not much should change in terms of wind speed. Do you know any planned improvement to this feature?

Built and flew a mission last night on the Iraq map. Weather settings as follows: Light Scattered 1, 04:30 start June 30th, Fog = Off 90 min into the mission 2 of the group report they cant see due to the fog thickness, the other 2 of the group report no fog, bright blue sky. I have watched the 2 track files attached and can report 2 very different weather systems are seen. Not sure if this is a bug, or a local setting which the 2 members have set which overrides the Mission Editor settings. Chatted briefly with @BIGNEWY on discord and he asked me to post the track files here. Hi everyone, this new fog system is very nice to use in manual mode but every time I try to use in AUTO mode nothing seems to change, despite setting different dates or weather presets. How auto fog actually works?
-
Version 2.9.10.4160 and .4686. Syria map. Supercarrier. F/A-18C. Fog set to 'auto'. Over Easter Mediterranean, late morning, summer, warm weather, light wind, scattered clouds. Perfectly clear conditions. However, Carrier ATC orders CASE II recovery on inbound. This was not the case (pun intended) before the new fog feature was implemented.

Yes, snow. I miss it. I love flying in it. You can't have true winter without snow. Thanks.

No seriously, can we please have falling snow again in DCS 2.7 please? I love snow. I think if you're going to fight wars in Georgia or frankly anywhere in the Russian sphere of influence you should be prepared to fly and fight thru the snow. We had snow as an option at least on 23 May on open beta as per below:

With the new weather now being variable at airfields and the possibility that you could be landing in different conditions to which you took off from, I think an ATIS function should be screaming out be added. Either a sub option under the current airfield frequency menu or a separate frequency channel for ATIS. Having more frequencies would be more work however this would also be the more realistic way of adding in ATIS. Make sure to randomise voice actors too...

Hello, coming back to the small stepchild of the CVNs, the LHA Tarawa has an issue in which the bow wake is not rendering/showing I've attached different angles , and also as a reference most other ships that actually have this rendered/showing Medium and High settings checked, consistent for AI and Carrier class ships. Additionally , but I believe this was already reported, stern wakes don't seem to appear on any of them anymore.

Hello Whishlist , I'd wish the colors to be having less color cast in general (I hope it's correctly been translated from google, in german: "Farbstich"). Meaning, that there is way to much over all blue, independet from distance, colored over the whole screen. Of course, for distant objects on ground, it makes perfectly sense, but espacially for near clouds, where you have less dust or humidity, it looks to intense. Also, it reduces the contrast too much for the clouds. To make the thing more clear, of what I mean, I just edited two screenshots in Photoshop. Flying in real life is not my every day business (sadly) - maybe I am wrong and it looks more often like the original image. So feel free to correct me if this is the case.

Hello everybody, I finally managed to get a new pc so, in addition to the rest, i'm going down deep into weather system. What's not clear to me is that if one system exclude the other or they're working together. Do the parameters set in static mode affect the weather outcome when i press "GENERATE" button? I mean, is static mode a way to create a base from which dynamic generate the weather? Another question: i flew a mission in thuderstorm and lightings occurred. I tried but i wasn't able to reproduce this effect in my mission. Can anyone help me? I hope this above wasn't discussed before. I tried the search function but maybe i used wrong keywords. Thanks a lot and have a good flight and a Merry Christmas as well!!!

The temperature settings on the Kola map are very limited. In the coldest period in Kola you can set it to -21. I lived in Murmansk and now my relatives live there, they have a normal winter temperature of -27 with jumps to -40 (Celsius) for a few days or a week

I'd like presets for a summer thunderstorm and winter snow please. Thanks!

***************************************************************** SOLVED: I hope this helps someone else. I was really pulling my hair out. THIS IS NOT A DCS ISSUE. IT IS A GPU (and probably NVidia) ISSUE. The solution for me was to use MSIAfterburner to undervolt the GPU to 90% power usage (or more, your mileage may vary, but I started really low and stress-tested my way up). See my final post below. ***************************************************************** I fly in VR with a Reverb G2 headset (full specs in dxDiag attached). I recently purchased an ASUS TUF RTX 4080 and have been trying to find the sweet spot for VR performance. Because it's nearly top end kit, the card has handled almost everything I've thrown at it...except rain. Apparently, it hates rain. Any mission with rain coming down on the client aircraft causes all displays to go completely black, not just the headset but the mirrored 2D display as well. I would say it's a CTD, but I can't tell if we're back at the desktop or not because the display is off. The PC is still running, but I can't manipulate the GUI without a display, so I am forced to reboot. What's weird is that the card has handled low level flying through dense urban areas on a relatively poor-performing terrain (Marianas over Guam) while maintaining around 40fps (see settings photos attached below). But in a fairly empty mission when it's rainy, I get almost immediate black screen upon loading into a jet (track file attached). On another test, I cold-started a warbird on Marianas in bad weather, but the field was clear. I started and took off just fine, but flew through a rain cloud just off the runway. Immediately black screen on all displays. (I don't have a trackfile, but can easily reproduce on request). These symptoms lead me to believe that the PSU might be shutting off power to my GPU and so this may not be directly DCS-related (only indirectly because the sim is asking for more power than the PSU is willing to give...at least on my current theory). Either way, I thought this might be something ED devs would be interested in and I hoped that maybe some intelligent forum-goer might be able to confirm my theory or set me straight. Is it my PSU or some rain-related setting in DCS? Thanks! I'm using the following in my ATIS script local weather = env.mission.weather local cloudCover = api.TUC.GetCloudCoverAsString(false) local cloudBase = api.TUC.MetresToFeet(weather.clouds.base) local thickness = api.TUC.MetresToFeet(weather.clouds.thickness) local visibility = weather.visibility.distance local fogThickness = api.TUC.MetresToFeet(weather.fog.thickness) local fogVisibility = weather.fog.visibility local dustDensity = api.TUC.MetresToFeet(weather.dust_density) Everything looks okay except that the THICKNESS which I'm led to believe from the documentation on hoggitworld is for the lowest cloudbase, ALWAYS reports the same amount of 656ft, regardless of the weather preset used and how thick the cloudbase is to fly through. Am I using this correctly or is this a bug? Cross posted in the Weather System bug list just in case it's not a scripting error.
